The Use of Botulinum Toxin Type A and the Occurrence of Anaphylaxis: A Descriptive Analysis of Data from the European Spontaneous Reporting System.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin type A (BTA) is a protein produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. It is the most widely used among botulinum toxin types, and it is recommended for the treatment of many clinical conditions, including muscle hyperactivity syndromes and for esthetic indications too. BTA is generally considered safe, and the most reported adverse events (AEs) include eyelids ptosis, immunogenicity, neuromuscular disorders and hypersensitivity reactions. In addition, serious idiosyncratic AEs, such as anaphylactic shock, have been highlighted. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: Taking into ac

Functional and Structural Changes in Patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Treated in Poland during 12-Month Follow-Up: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Background: In recent years, rapid advances in diagnosis and treatment have been observed in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) patients. The introduction of modern therapies and screening tests has significantly changed the clinical picture of the disease. The previous classification has, therefore, been replaced by new phenotypes: non-sitters, sitters, and walkers, defined by the patient's functional level. However, despite the change in the clinical picture of the disease, patients still suffer from accompanying structural disorders such as scoliosis or joint contractures. Their presence also si

Serotonin syndrome caused by a CYP2C19-mediated interaction between low-dose escitalopram and clopidogrel: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Serotonin syndrome has been recognized as a serious adverse reaction to antidepressants and is characterized by sudden or severe autonomic nerve dysfunction and neuromuscular symptoms. Without an accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment, serotonin syndrome progresses rapidly and can be life-threatening. It is usually related to the dose of 5-hydroxytryptamine drugs, and the dose is the basis for diagnosis. Therefore, serotonin syndrome induced by low-dose antidepressants rarely occurs, and clinicians are more likely to misdiagnose patients who take low-dose antidepressants with simi

Diaphragm Electromyography Versus Ultrasonography in the Prediction of Mechanical Ventilation Liberation Outcome.

BACKGROUND: ICU-acquired diaphragm paresis occurs in about 25% of patients after prolonged mechanical ventilation. Diaphragm function can be evaluated via several approaches including monitoring of electrical activity of diaphragm (electromyography [EMG]) or ultrasound (US) measurements. We aimed to assess the usefulness of diaphragm EMG indices in predicting liberation outcome in comparison with diaphragm US measurements. METHODS: We included consecutive subjects invasively ventilated for > 48 h for acute respiratory failure and who were considered ready to undergo a spontaneous breathing tr

Eccentric Strength Assessment of Hamstring Muscles with New Technologies: a Systematic Review of Current Methods and Clinical Implications.

BACKGROUND: Given the severe economic and performance implications of hamstring injuries, there are different attempts to identify their risk factors for subsequently developing injury prevention strategies to reduce the risk of these injuries. One of the strategies reported in the scientific literature is the application of interventions with eccentric exercises. To verify the effectiveness of these interventions, different eccentric strength measurements have been used with low-cost devices as alternatives to the widespread used isokinetic dynamometers and the technically limited handheld dy

Smartphone and Wearable Sensors for the Estimation of Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy Disease Severity: Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a progressive neuromuscular disease. Its slow and variable progression makes the development of new treatments highly dependent on validated biomarkers that can quantify disease progression and response to drug interventions. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to build a tool that estimates FSHD clinical severity based on behavioral features captured using smartphone and remote sensor data. The adoption of remote monitoring tools, such as smartphones and wearables, would provide a novel opportunity for continuous, passive, and objective monitoring
