Midurethral sling procedures for stress urinary incontinence in women over 80 years.

AIMS: To compare the safety and efficacy of midurethral sling surgery for management of urinary stress incontinence in women over 80 years versus younger women. METHODS: 1225 consecutive women with urodynamic stress incontinence had a synthetic midurethral sling (955 retropubic, 270 transobturator) at our institution between 1999 and 2007. Ninety one percent (n = 1112) of the patients were interviewed via phone call with a structured questionnaire and were included in the analysis. The mean follow-up was 50 ± 24 months (range 12-114). Comparison between elderly (≥80 years, n = 96) and younger

Laparoscopic transvesical excision and reconstruction in the management of mid-urethral tape mesh erosion and stones around the bladder neck: initial experiences.

UNLABELLED: Study Type--Prevalence (prospective cohort) Level of Evidence 1b. What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Managing foreign bodies, including mesh and stones, after anti-incontinence surgery is important because complete removal is necessary to prevent infection and recurrence of stone formation. Traditionally, surgical management of such complications has involved excision using a transurethral approach, with or without a laparoscopic transvesical procedure. The study shows that mesh complications, including exposure and adherent stones, can be successfully treate

Severe postprostatectomy incontinence: Is there an association between preoperative urodynamic findings and outcome of incontinence surgery?

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated urodynamic findings in prostate cancer patients with self-reported persistent severe postprostatectomy urinary incontinence (PPI) as well as the outcome of incontinence surgery. The main aim was to evaluate the ability of preoperative urodynamic dysfunctions to predict the outcome of incontinence surgery. The hypothesis was that preoperative bladder dysfunction was predictive of an unsuccessful surgical outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on patient-reported adverse effects after radical prostatectomy (RP) in 2005-2009, 94 men with persistent severe PPI we

Stress urinary incontinence and overactive bladder syndrome: current options and new targets for management.

In the United States, office visits for women seeking treatment for urinary incontinence more than doubled between 1994 and 2000, from 1845 per 100 000 women. This review article addresses treatment options for 2 common types of incontinence in women: stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and detrusor overactivity (DO), commonly referred to as urge urinary incontinence (UUI). In the past, those with SUI typically faced limited treatment options, such as Kegel exercises, pessaries, or major surgery (Burch or Marshall-Marchetti-Krantz operations). However, treatment options for women also included a

The use of biological materials in urogynecologic reconstruction: a systematic review.

There are numerous randomized controlled trials examining biological materials in urogynecologic surgery. For prolapse surgery, the addition of a biological graft adds no benefit compared with native tissue repairs for rectocele repair. Conflicting data exist regarding cystocele repair. Synthetic mesh repairs provide superior anatomical support for sacral colpopexy and cystocele repair compared with biologic grafts. However, biological and synthetic mesh slings have equivalent success rates for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. Contrary to prior assumptions that biologic grafts add
