Gender differences in mental health characteristics and gambling among African-American adolescent gamblers.

This study explores gender differences in lifetime and recent substance use/internalizing behavior, childhood externalizing behavior, and gambling preferences among African-American youth gamblers. Data are from a prospective study of a community sample of 452 urban African-American youths who began at entry into first grade and were followed for ten years. Gambling was associated with high teacher ratings of childhood externalizing behaviors among males and with high parent ratings of childhood impulsivity and hyperactivity among both genders. Internalizing behavior was associated with female

NFIB Haploinsufficiency Is Associated with Intellectual Disability and Macrocephaly.

The nuclear factor I (NFI) family of transcription factors play an important role in normal development of multiple organs. Three NFI family members are highly expressed in the brain, and deletions or sequence variants in two of these, NFIA and NFIX, have been associated with intellectual disability (ID) and brain malformations. NFIB, however, has not previously been implicated in human disease. Here, we present a cohort of 18 individuals with mild ID and behavioral issues who are haploinsufficient for NFIB. Ten individuals harbored overlapping microdeletions of the chromosomal 9p23-p22.2 regi

Therapeutic work with a physically abused preschooler.

This paper explores the impact of early abuse by a parental figure (foster mother) on a child's subsequent development. The child's adoption into a nurturing home at age 3-1/2 allowed for early intervention, and a brief follow-up period of treatment at age ten provides further insight into the impact of early trauma across developmental periods. The paper highlights unique challenges that may arise in treatment with child victims of interpersonal violence. During treatment, the child struggled with profound difficulty tolerating his natural aggressive impulses and distinguishing inner fantasie

Neurobehavioral characteristics of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders in communities from Italy: Preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: There has been considerable effort expended on defining neurobehavioral characteristics of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Children with FASD display a range of cognitive deficits and behavioral problems. In this article, we report on the neurobehavioral characteristics of children with FASD in selected communities in Italy. It was expected that both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive characteristics would discriminate children with FASD from controls and that the groups would also differ on intellectual functioning, language comprehension, and academic sk

[Child and adolescent development: common mental disorders according to age and gender].

Despite the increase in the incidence and prevalence rates of children and adolescents' mental disorders, there are few works performed with large and representative samples of children and adolescents with psychopathological symptoms. The present work analyses 588 participants referred by first care pediatricians to a specialized unit for children and adolescents' mental health. As a result of the study, a statistically significant relation was found between age and diagnosis: a larger incidence of behavioral disorders, communication disorders, elimination disorders, pervasive developmental d

A review of the etiology, associated comorbidities, and treatment of orthostatic hypotension.

The magnitude of increase in systolic blood pressure in response to the shift from supine to upright posture is considered to reflect the adequacy of orthostatic regulation. Orthostatic integrity is largely maintained by the interaction between the skeletal muscle pump, neurovascular compensation, neurohumoral effects, and cerebral blood flow regulation. Various physiological states and disease conditions may disrupt these mechanisms as seen in vasovagal syncope, dysautonomic orthostatic intolerance, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. Orthostatic hypotension (OH) and decreased cere

The Fast Spiking Subpopulation of Striatal Neurons Coding for Temporal Cognition of Movements.

Background: Timing dysfunctions occur in a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders such as Parkinson's disease, obsessive-compulsive disorder, autism and attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder. Several lines of evidence show that disrupted timing processing is involved in specific fronto-striatal abnormalities. The striatum encodes reinforcement learning and procedural motion, and consequently is required to represent temporal information precisely, which then guides actions in proper sequence. Previous studies highlighted the temporal scaling property of timing-relevant striatal ne

Ghrelin and leptin response to oral glucose challenge among antipsychotic drug-treated children.

We investigated ghrelin, leptin, glucose, and insulin response to an oral glucose tolerance test among children receiving antipsychotics. Hormone concentrations were assayed at fasting, 30, 60, and 120 minutes. The sample was composed of 9 obese (defined as at or above the 95th percentile for age) and 10 overweight/normal children (defined as less than the 95th percentile in weight) based on National Institutes of Health criteria. Ages of the obese (10.7 +/- 3.4 years) and the overweight/normal (13.1 +/- 1.6 years) did not differ. Leptin was significantly higher among the obese group and did n

Chasing tics in the human brain: development of open, scheduled and closed loop responsive approaches to deep brain stimulation for tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome is a childhood-onset disorder characterized by a combination of motor and vocal tics, often associated with psychiatric comorbidities including attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Despite an onset early in life, half of patients may present symptoms in adulthood, with variable degrees of severity. In select cases, the syndrome may lead to significant physical and social impairment, and a worrisome risk for self injury. Evolving research has provided evidence supporting the idea that the pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome is direct

The Treatment of Severe Childhood Aggression Study: 12 Weeks of Extended, Blinded Treatment in Clinical Responders.

OBJECTIVES: Previous "Treatment of Severe Childhood Aggression" (TOSCA) reports demonstrated that many children with severe physical aggression and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) responded well to two randomized treatments (parent training [PT]+stimulant+placebo = Basic vs. PT+stimulant+risperidone = Augmented) for 9 weeks. An important clinical question is whether these favorable outcomes are maintained over longer times. METHODS: Clinical responders to the 9-week trial (n = 103/168), defined as Clinical Global Impressions (CGI)-Improvement of much/very much improved plus su

Disruption of Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase Partially Mediates Neonatal Isoflurane Anesthesia-Induced Changes in Dendritic Spines and Cognitive Function in Juvenile Mice.

There is a growing concern worldwide about the potential harmful effects of anesthesia on brain development, based on studies in both humans and animals. In infants, repeated anesthesia exposure is linked to learning disabilities and attention disorders. Similarly, laboratory studies in mice show that neonates exposed to general anesthesia experience long-term cognitive and behavioral impairments. Inhaled anesthetics affect the postsynaptic density (PSD)-95, discs large homolog, and zona occludens-1 (PDZ) domains. The disruption of the synaptic PSD95-PDZ2 domain-mediated protein interactions l

Predictors of rebellious behavior in childhood parental drug use, peers, school environment, and child personality.

This study assesses the interrelationships among several sets of variables and rebellious behavior in a sample of Puerto Rican and African American elementary school-aged children. The independent sets of variables (domains) were child personality attributes, parental attributes, including parental marijuana use, peer factors, school environment, and ethnic identification and discrimination. The dependent or outcome variable was children's rebellious behavior. Children and their mothers were interviewed in their homes. Pearson correlations and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were use

Parent-reported emotion regulation in children with dyslexia and/or developmental language disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Recent research has found that children with dyslexia have increased mental health problems. However, little is known about their emotion regulation, an ability that is crucial to psychosocial and academic well-being. Often, developmental language disorder (DLD) co-occurs with dyslexia, and importantly, DLD is also associated with increased mental health problems as well as poor emotion regulation. Neither line of research on mental health has accounted for the co-occurrence of dyslexia and DLD; thus, it is possible that difficulties with emotion regulation in either population m

Developmental pyrethroid exposure disrupts molecular pathways for MAP kinase and circadian rhythms in mouse brain.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are a category of pervasive disorders of the developing nervous system with few or no recognized biomarkers. A significant portion of the risk for NDDs, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is contributed by the environment, and exposure to pyrethroid pesticides during pregnancy has been identified as a potential risk factor for NDD in the unborn child. We recently showed that low-dose developmental exposure to the pyrethroid pesticide deltamethrin in mice causes male-biased changes to ADHD- and NDD-relevant behaviors as well as the str

Proprioception and Cognitive Polarization in Autism: The Bipolar Tensile Model.

This article introduces the Bipolar Tensile Model, a neurosemiotic and integrative framework for understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The model reinterprets ASD not as a collection of deficits, but as the outcome of an unresolved tension between two complementary hemispheric cognitive modalities: symbolic-sequential and corporeal-perceptual. In typical development, these modalities are dynamically harmonized through an extended interhemispheric network, comprising the Default Mode Network, major cerebral commissures (corpus callosum, anterior and hippocampal), and the cerebellum. Recognizing Psychiatric Comorbidity With Reading Disorders.

Reading disorder (RD), a specific learning disorder (SLD) of reading that includes impairment in word reading, reading fluency, and/or reading comprehension, is common in the general population but often is not comprehensively understood or assessed in mental health settings. In education settings, comorbid mental and associated disorders may be inadequately integrated into intervention plans. Assessment and intervention for RD may be delayed or absent in children with frequently co-occurring mental disorders not fully responding to treatment in both school and mental health settings.
