Dowling-Degos disease, hidradenitis suppurativa, and multiple keratoacanthomas. A disorder that may be caused by a single underlying defect in pilosebaceous epithelial proliferation.

We report a case in which one patient had Dowling-Degos disease (reticulate pigmented anomaly of the flexures), hidradenitis suppurativa, and multiple keratoacanthomas. Abnormal epithelial proliferation involving mainly the pilosebaceous apparatus has been recognized in all three conditions. We speculate that a single underlying defect in follicular epithelial proliferation, characterized by variable expressivity, accounts for the coexistence of these clinically distinct disorders of follicular derivation.

Retinitis pigmentosa associated with hearing loss, thyroid disease, vitiligo, and alopecia areata: retinitis pigmentosa and vitiligo.

A 54-year-old woman with retinitis pigmentosa and hearing loss developed white skin patches that were subsequently diagnosed as vitiligo. A review of the literature reveals that, although the association of vitiligo with various tapedoretinal degenerations has been reported on several occasions, the association with typical retinitis pigmentosa is quite rare. This combination of disorders associated with pigment loss is of interest as immunologic disturbances have been implicated on both.

[Pigmented villonodular synovitis of the temporomandibular joint:report of one case and review of literatures].

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a benign, proliferative disorder of synovium. It often affects the knee, and rarely occurs in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This paper reported a 45-year-old male patient with PVNS of the TMJ, who was referred with a chief complaint of slowly growing and painless preauricular mass that was noticed about 1 year. Radical excision and follow-up were conducted, no recurrence and metastasis were noted.

Waardenburg Syndrome type 1: A case report.

Waardenburg Syndrome (WS) is a rare hereditary disorder that is characterized by the clinical manifestations of oculocutaneous anomalies of pigmentation, congenital deafness, dystopia canthorum, and broad nasal root. It demonstrates both genetically and clinically heterogenous characteristics. In this article, we report an 11-month-old boy with WS1, one of four clinicat types of WS. He exhibited white forelock, hypopigmented macules and patches, heterochromia irides, and dystopia canthorum.

Childhood vitiligo.

Vitiligo is a common skin disorder in which pigment is lost from the skin and adnexae. Half of all cases begin before the age of 20 years. Until recently, there was a paucity of published data regarding effective therapy of vitiligo. Current therapy is quite effective, and while many patients may not experience complete repigmentation, 50% to 75% repigmentation of vitiligo with recent onset routinely can be expected with available therapeutics.

Alkaptonuria: a case report.

Alkaptonuria is a rare, autosomally recessive, metabolic disorder caused by a deficiency in homogentisic acid oxidase. It results in accumulation and deposition of homogentisic acid in cartilage, eyelids, forehead, cheeks, axillae, genital regions, nail beds, buccal mucosa, larynx, tympanic eardrum, and the tendons. We report a 33-year-old woman who presented with alkaptonuria and ochronotic pigment deposited in articular cartilage and cartilage of the ear and sclera.

[Multiple pigmented basalioma of the scalp in a patient with Curschmann-Steinert myotonia dystrophica. Confirmation of a rare symptom constellation].

A 50-year-old woman presented with myotonic dystrophy (Curschmann-Steinert disease) and multiple pigmented basal cell carcinomas of the scalp. She also had typical androgenetic alopecia seen in this disorder. In 1986 Stieler and Plewig described the first patient with myotonic dystrophy and multiple basal cell carcinomas. There may be a genetic predisposition for cutaneous tumors with follicular origin, as multiple pilomatricomas also occur frequently in such patients.

Pattern dystrophies of the retinal pigment epithelium. The study of three generations in a family.

Three members of a family in one generation were affected by a pattern dystrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium. The patients present typical hyperpigmented macular RPE lesions in a butterfly-shaped to (macro-)reticular pattern, and were all asymptomatic. Examination of 26 family members in 3 generations suggests autosomal recessive inheritance. The family showed some cases of congenital deutanomaly, and a female subject presented both disorders.

Melanotic meningioma complicated by disseminated intravascular coagulation.

The purpose of this paper is fourfold: First, to confirm the rarity of melanotic meningioma, as we have found only 11 reported cases; second to demonstrate that this tumor is not always totally pigmented, a fact that has not been mentioned before; third, to show an unusual recurrence as a hemorrhagic cystic meningioma 10 years and 8 months after removal; and fourth, to describe the association of disseminated intravascular coagulation, a rare disorder with brain tumors.

Kearns-Sayre syndrome. A review of a multisystem disorder of children and young adults.

The syndrome of a slowly progressive external ophthalmoplegia, pigment retinopathy, and disorder of cardiac conduction was described by Kearns and Sayre in 1958. In patients with this triad, other neurological deficits may occur with associated abnormalities of the electrocardiogram, electroencephalogram, audiogram, and an elevation of protein in cerebrospinal fluid. The onset of a potentially lethal cardiac dysrhythmia in a patient with this slowly progressive degeneration of the nervous system can be anticipated and prevented by the use of an artivicial cardiac pacemaker.

A Novel Radiographic and Genetic Variant of Adult-Onset Leukoencephalopathy With Axonal Spheroids and Pigmented Glia: Case Report.

BACKGROUND: The differential for acute onset progressive leukoencephalopathy in adults is broad. Adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia is a rare genetic white matter disorder with typical onset around 40 years. Variability in clinical presentation can often lead to misdiagnosis with other neurodegenerative disorders, underscoring the importance of taking a detailed medical history, obtaining comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, and considering timely genetic testing. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old woman with a medical history of systemic lupus erythematos

Co-occurrence of oculocutaneous albinism type 2 and mild sickle cell disease explained by HbS/βthal genotype in an individual from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Oculocutaneous albinism type 2 (OCA2) is a pigmentation disorder characterized by hypopigmentation of the skin, hair and eyes and ocular features. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is caused either by homozygosity of the beta globin gene variant c.20A > T/p.Glu6Val giving rise to severe anemia or by combined abnormal hemoglobins (HbS/βthal) leading to mild SCD. We report a 45 years old female patient from the Democratic Republic of Congo affected with these two disorders. She presented with creamy white skin and numerous pigmented patches called dendritic freckles, nystagmus, foveal hypoplasia grade 2

Implications of isoform multiplicity of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor in the pathogenesis of auditory-pigmentary syndromes.

Microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) is the human homolog of a basic helix-loop-helix-leucine zipper protein (Mitf), encoded by the mouse microphthalmia locus. Mutations in the MITF gene have been identified in some patients with Waardenburg syndrome type 2 (WS2), which is a dominantly inherited disorder, characterized by varying combinations of sensorineural hearing loss and pigmentary disturbances. Furthermore, mice with mutations at the Mitf locus are associated with various phenotypes, such as white coat color, small eyes, a deficiency in mast cells, and osteopetrosis. Thu

Reticulate postinflammatory hyperpigmentation with band-like mucin deposition.

BACKGROUND: Mucinoses of the skin are a group of disorders sharing accumulation of mucin in the skin or hair follicles. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, with pigmentary incontinence, is due to loss of melanin from epidermal basal cells and its accumulation in dermal macrophages. METHODS: We describe clinicopathologic features of two patients presenting with the association of pigmentary incontinence with an unusual diffuse, band-like dermal deposition of mucin, clinically presenting with reticular pigmented macular lesions. RESULTS: Two patients were observed with asymptomatic, persistent

Mutational Analysis on Membrane Associated Transporter Protein (MATP) and Their Structural Consequences in Oculocutaeous Albinism Type 4 (OCA4)-A Molecular Dynamics Approach.

Oculocutaneous albinism type IV (OCA4) is an autosomal recessive inherited disorder which is characterized by reduced biosynthesis of melanin pigmentation in skin, hair, and eyes and caused by the genetic mutations in the membrane-associated transporter protein (MATP) encoded by SLC45A2 gene. The MATP protein consists of 530 amino acids which contains 12 putative transmembrane domains and plays an important role in pigmentation and probably functions as a membrane transporter in melanosomes. We scrutinized the most OCA4 disease-associated mutation and their structural consequences on SLC45A2 g

Petaloid-pattern pigmentary retinopathy: a novel case report.

We report the case of a 6-year-old girl with an unusual petaloid-pattern pigmentary retinopathy associated with nyctalopia and reduction of vision which had been invariably static over the past 5 years. We performed a comprehensive ophthalmic examination including fundoscopy, autofluorescent imaging, electroretinography and optical coherence tomography. There were diffuse retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) washout areas with blotches of pigment distributed in the pattern of a petal with marked chorioretinal atrophy and scar at the fovea. The arterial caliber was normal. Investigations ruled out

Substantia nigra lesions in Alzheimer disease and normal aging.

Clinical and pathological overlap between Alzheimer disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) has been well described; however, the mechanisms of overlap between these two disorders remain unknown. We retrospectively examined clinical and neuropathological features from 66 individuals participating in the Rochester Alzheimer Disease Center to determine the association of AD with substantia nigra (SN) pathology. SN pathology, identified by a loss of pigmented neurons and the presence of gliosis, pigment-laden macrophages, and Lewy bodies, was blindly scored in 48 AD cases and 18 normal elderly

[Neurilemmomatosis--a sporadic and familial cases].

Three cases of neurilemmomatosis are reported. A 22-year-old man without any relatives with similar symptoms visited our clinic, complaining of multiple skin tumors since the age of 15 and bilateral acoustic nerve symptoms since 19. Physical examination revealed no pigmented or depigmented spots. Histopathological examination of the eight tumors excised from the skin, acoustic nerve and spinal cord showed that these were all neurilemmomas. A 36-year-old man with a 15 year history of multiple skin tumors and one year history of acoustic nerve symptoms was seen at our clinic, revealing no pigmen
