Clinical characteristics and outcome in 15 dogs treated with transsphenoidal hypophysectomy for nonfunctional sellar masses.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical features, neurological examination findings, diagnostic imaging results, histopathological findings, and outcome following transsphenoidal hypophysectomy (TSH) in dogs with nonfunctional sellar masses (NFSM). STUDY DESIGN: Multi-institutional retrospective study. METHODS: Medical records of dogs that underwent TSH for a NFSM were reviewed for clinical signs, physical and neurological examination findings, diagnostic imaging results, endocrine testing, surgery reports, and outcome. Minimally invasive video-assisted parathyroidectomy in dogs: Technique description and feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a minimally invasive approach to the parathyroid gland for the treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism. STUDY DESIGN: Surgical technique description and clinical case report. ANIMALS: Five canine cadavers and 5 client-owned dogs with primary hyperparathyroidism. METHODS: A surgical technique for minimally invasive video-assisted parathyroidectomy (MIVAP), described for humans, was adapted for dogs. With the dog in dorsal recumbency, a 15 mm incision was made on the midline, 1 finger width caudal to the cricoid cartilage of the larynx. A 5 mm 30° rigid endoscope was i

Surgical description and outcome of ultrasound-guided minimally invasive parathyroidectomy in 50 dogs with primary hyperparathyroidism.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the surgical technique and clinical outcome of minimally invasive parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in the dog. ANIMALS: Fifty client-owned dogs with PHPT that underwent minimally invasive parathyroidectomy. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: An ultrasound-guided mini lateral approach was made via a plane established between the sternocephalicus muscle and sternohyoideus muscles to expose the thyroid gland and enlarged parathyroid gland. Use of polyamide cable ties during experimental omentectomy in adult horses with histopathological assessment.

OBJECTIVE: To report the use of nylon cable ties (NCT) for omentectomy in the horse. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study. ANIMALS: Eight healthy adult horses. METHODS: Horses underwent nylon cable tie (NCT) ligation of the greater omentum after ventral midline celiotomy. The time required to complete the omentectomy was recorded. Horses were recovered for 14 days before repeat celiotomy, adhesions assessment, and histological examination of the omentectomy site using a proposed histologic grading scheme. The total time for omentectomy procedure and histologic score was assessed for normality.
