RSATalker: Realistic Socially-Aware Talking Head Generation for Multi-Turn Conversation.

Talking head generation is increasingly important in virtual reality (VR), especially for social scenarios involving multi-turn conversation. Existing approaches face notable limitations: mesh-based 3D methods can model dual-person dialogue but lack realistic textures, large-model-based 2D methods produce natural appearances but incur prohibitive computational costs. Recently, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS)-based methods achieve efficient and realistic rendering but remain speaker-only and ignore social relationships. We introduce RSATalker, the first framework that leverages 3DGS for realistic

Need for cognitive closure predicts preference for similar others and reduced diversity in social networks.

People vary in their tolerance for uncertainty, and this motivation—known as Need for Cognitive Closure (NFC)—can shape social behavior. Individuals high in NFC are driven to avoid ambiguity and quickly resolve uncertainty. Because interacting with similar others (homophily) tends to reduce uncertainty, while engaging with dissimilar others (heterophily) can increase it, we examined whether NFC predicts preferences for homophilous over heterophilous interactions. Across four correlational studies and a preregistered experiment, we found that higher NFC was consistently associated with lower he

Eliciting the views of autistic adolescents attending specialist schools on what friendships mean to them.

Friendship has been identified as an important way to support autistic adolescents' social, emotional and cognitive development. However, research examining autistic adolescents' friendships has tended to use methodologies inaccessible to children with complex communication and learning needs. We examined the friendship experiences of 12 autistic adolescents (aged 12-15 years) with complex communication and learning needs who attended a specialist school. Using reflexive thematic analysis, we identified two themes. Within the first theme of 'reconceptualising friendship', the adolescents ident

Is peer adversity in childhood and adolescence linked to interpersonal functioning in adulthood? A meta-analytic review.

This meta-analysis synthesizes research on longitudinal associations between child and adolescent peer adversity and various domains of adult interpersonal functioning. Meta-analyses were conducted on 240 effect sizes from 39 studies published between 1998 and 2024, unadjusted and adjusted for gender, socioeconomic status, and childhood family adversity. Participants (Ntotal = 51,139, proportion of girls = 54.3%, average duration to follow-up = 11.6 years) come from 28 samples that were primarily based in Europe or North America. Peer adversity was linked to adult interpersonal functioning in

Stop Right Now, Thank You Very Much: Psychopathic Traits, Externalizing Dimensions, and Interpersonal Proximity.

Psychopathy involves disruptions in affiliation and threat sensitivity, but these are hard to disentangle behaviorally. This preregistered study (independent sample Ns = 175 and 173) used clinical-forensic and transdiagnostic measures relevant to psychopathy and an adapted interpersonal distance task. Participants indicated preferred proximity to different targets ranging in affiliation and threat after describing each target in their own words. As expected, participants preferred closer proximity to affiliative targets (e.g., a friend) versus threatening ones (e.g., a thief). However, psychop

Partner-Provided Inferences Impact Memory.

Prior research demonstrates that collective discourse surrounding shared experiences can impact subsequent memory. Correct information provided by a partner can improve the accuracy of subsequent memories, while inaccurate partner-provided information can decrease the accuracy of such recollections. Despite this focus on how post-event information provided by one's peers can impact memory performance, the manner in which partner-provided inferential information affects memory has not been investigated. To date, the effects of inferences on subsequent memory performance have been primarily limi

Time Management, Stigma, Jealousy, and More: A Content Analysis of the Challenges of Polyamory.

Despite growing public and scientific interest in consensually non-monogamous (CNM) relationships, clinical and empirical understandings of the challenges faced by people who engage in polyamory remain limited. To address this gap, we conducted a content analysis of 763 open-ended responses from 219 individuals currently in a polyamorous relationship who were asked to describe the challenges of their relationship structure. We identified 15 majors theme and several corresponding minor themes. The four most frequently reported challenges of polyamory included: (1) time management issues (72.6%)

Defensive Strategies and Handling Paths in Intimate Relationship Conflicts: A Dynamic Game Model From the Perspective of Emotional Regulation.

This study develops a dynamic game model of intimate relationship conflicts that incorporates emotion regulation mechanisms, translating cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression into strategic parameters. The model simulates the dynamic evolution of defensive strategies and intervention paths, capturing the continuous interplay between emotional states and conflict behavior choices in realistic relational contexts. Using longitudinal tracking data from 320 couples and agent-based simulations, we validate the core mechanisms and demonstrate that flexibility in emotion regulation signifi

Antagonistic Narcissism in Women With Borderline Personality Disorder Assessed by Direct and Indirect Measures.

Antagonistic narcissism (AN), involving devaluation, aggression, and impulsivity, is a key feature of narcissism and overlaps with borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study compared explicit (self-reported) and implicit (indirectly measured) AN in women with BPD and a matched clinical control (CC) group and examined associations with aggression, interpersonal problems, and emotion dysregulation. Fifty-one women with BPD and 51 CC participants completed the AN Implicit Association Test (AN-IAT), the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire (NARQ), and clinical assessments. Grou

Social presence and its role in social interactions: Insights, challenges and a call for action.

Over the past decades, we have seen a fundamentally new form of social interaction become more and more common in our everyday lives: mediated social interactions, in which we do not speak to a person face-to-face, but the interaction takes place via a video call or some other form of technology. While most people would agree that a mediated interaction is somehow different from a face-to-face interaction, we currently lack a framework for conceptualizing what exactly is different. This is especially important when studying how mediated interactions shape our understanding of others' mental st

Infant representations of social relationships: the need to consider the social world.

We present three challenges to Thomas' theory leveraging our expertise in social and cognitive development. First, Thomas' theory fails to capture defining relationship characteristics, necessitating consideration of relationship science. Second, we argue that declaring innate knowledge of relationships is premature. Third, we propose that in the core domain of social cognition, relationship and sociomoral representations exist simultaneously without need for replacement.

Amicable rivalries and hostile rivalries: Divergent profiles of motivation and unethical conduct.

Rivalries motivate competitive performance but can also increase unethical intentions. Although extant theorizing treats this moral-motivational trade-off as inevitable, we show that rivalry's effect on unethical intentions depends on the tenor of the rivalry. Colder competitive relationships (hostile rivalries) exhibit the competitive profile documented in the literature: stronger motivation and increased unethical intentions. But warmer competitive relationships (amicable rivalries) involve a different competitive profile: stronger motivation without increased unethical intentions. Study 1 s

Understanding the Associations Between Attachment Insecurity, Emotional Flooding, and Conflict Behaviors in Prenatal Couples.

The transition to parenthood is a period of heightened vulnerability for many couples, often marked by increased conflict. Attachment insecurity is a known risk factor, linked to dysfunctional conflict dynamics in couples more broadly. Yet, the emotional processes driving these patterns remain underexplored, especially from a dyadic perspective. This study examined emotional flooding-a form of dyadic emotion dysregulation-as a potential intermediary variable linking attachment to conflict behaviors. Ninety-six mixed-sex couples completed questionnaires on attachment and emotional flooding befo

Investigating "Another Me" digital twin technology to support the development of human relationships: An exploratory randomized controlled study.

Social anxiety disorder has a considerable negative impact on educational attainment, employment status, and relationship development. Exposure therapy is an established method used to treat social anxiety by getting patients used to talking to other people. However, this procedure requires patients to have conversations with strangers, which may impose a psychological burden. This study aimed to examine whether the burden could be reduced during a first-time face-to-face interaction by using a human digital twin avatar technology that we call "Another Me." We conducted an exploratory, randomi

Ties That Bind, Places That Matter: The Life-Satisfaction Gap Between Partnered and Single Individuals Varies Across Regions.

People in romantic relationships often report higher life satisfaction than single individuals. We propose that this life-satisfaction gap reflects, in part, alignment with the prevailing norm of being in a relationship. In a preregistered study with a large-scale data set (N = 382,078 adults across 379 regions in Great Britain), we replicated prior findings: partnered (vs. single) individuals reported higher life satisfaction. Notably, this life-satisfaction gap varied by region, being larger in regions with higher relationship rates and smaller in regions with lower relationship rates. This

Sexual life and intimate relationship experience among bladder cancer patients: a systematic review and qualitative meta-synthesis.

OBJECTIVES: The global incidence of bladder cancer continues to rise. Treatments for this disease, particularly radical cystectomy and urinary diversion, can profoundly disrupt sexual function and intimate relationships, leading to physiological, psychological, relational, and existential changes. However, qualitative evidence syntheses that integrate these experiences remain limited. This review aimed to synthesize qualitative research on bladder cancer patients' sexual life and intimate relationship experiences in order to inform the development of couple-centered interventions and continuou

The Reciprocal Relationship between School Connectedness and Adolescent Depressive Symptoms: A Meta-analytic Cross-lagged Panel Analysis.

Theorists have long assumed that school connectedness and depressive symptoms influence each other in adolescence. However, previous empirical studies on the strength and direction of this relationship have yielded inconsistent results. The present study used cross-lagged modeling to meta-analyze the available longitudinal data (27 studies with 27 effects involving 57,074 participants, mean age ranging from 11.23 to 17.4 years) on the relationship between school connectedness and depressive symptoms in adolescence, and the possible moderating effects of publication and study characteristics. Motivations for Self-Harm in Young People and Their Correlates: A Systematic Review.

Self-harm in young people is associated with increased risk of suicide and other negative long-term outcomes. Understanding the motivations driving self-harm behaviours among young people can help to inform the development of preventative and treatment interventions. Self-harm rates have been rising, but reviews of the recent quantitative literature have not been undertaken. PsycInfo, Embase and Medline were systematically searched in September 2024 for studies published in the past ten years. Quantitative studies that examined motivations for self-harm (including prevalence and/or correlates)

Tracing the Trajectory of Charles Manson's Interpersonal Dynamics: A Longitudinal Moment-to-Moment Analysis Using Continuous Assessment of Interpersonal Dynamics (CAID).

Charles Manson, notorious for his involvement in the gruesome Tate-LaBianca murders of 1969, remains a polarizing figure. His case has divided not only the public but also clinicians and researchers, resulting in a wide array of diagnoses from personality disorders to schizophrenia. To shed light on this longstanding debate, this study employs a novel approach to systematically assess moment-to-moment dyadic interpersonal exchanges between Manson and several interviewers over a 21-year span. Utilizing Continuous Assessment of Interpersonal Dynamics (CAID), we analyzed seven video-recorded inte
