Melanoma is a potentially aggressive skin cancer with a steadily rising incidence. Most melanomas are diagnosed at an early stage and associated with an excellent prognosis when treated appropriately. Primary treatment for melanoma is surgical. Wider surgical margins and a variety of techniques for comprehensive histologic margin assessment may be considered for lentigo maligna type melanoma on the head and neck, due to characteristic broad subclinical extension. Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an uncommon primary cutaneous neuroendocrine cancer. It most commonly presents as an indurated plaque or nodule on sun-damaged skin in elderly patients and is characterized by high rates of local recurrence and nodal metastasis. Whenever funduscopy reveals possible choroidal melanoma, all available information must be gathered to either confirm or exclude the diagnosis. Well-defined funduscopic criteria are available, which can already lead to a high degree of diagnostic certainty.
