Face recognition and cortical responses show similar sensitivity to noise spatial frequency.

To find cortical correlates of face recognition, we manipulated the recognizability of face images in a parametric manner by masking them with narrow-band spatial noise. Face recognition performance was best at the lowest and highest noise spatial frequencies (NSFs, 2 and 45 c/image, respectively), and degraded gradually towards central NSFs (11-16 c/image). The strength of the 130-180 ms neuromagnetic response (M170) in the temporo-occipital cortex paralleled the recognition performance, whereas the mid-occipital response at 70-120 ms acted in the opposite manner, being strongest for the cent

Intact verbal description of letters with diminished awareness of their forms.

Visual processing and its conscious awareness can be dissociated. To examine the extent of dissociation between ability to read characters or words and to be consciously aware of their forms, reading ability and conscious awareness for characters were examined using a tachistoscope in an alexic patient. A right handed woman with 14 years of education presented with incomplete right hemianopia, alexia with kanji (ideogram) agraphia, anomia, and amnesia. Brain MRI disclosed cerebral infarction limited to the left lower bank of the calcarine fissure, lingual and parahippocampal gyri, and an old i

Evoked potentials in albinos: efficacy of pattern stimuli in detecting misrouted optic fibers.

Misrouting of retinogeniculostriate projections associated with retinal hypopigmentation has been found to be a general phenomenon in mammals, including humans. Anomalous optic pathway projections of albinos may be detected by recording visually evoked potentials (VEPs). To determine the efficacy of various stimulus conditions for detecting misrouted optic fibers, we compared flash, modulated light, pattern reversal and pattern onset/offset (appearance/disappearance) stimuli. Pattern onset/offset were found superior in detecting anomalies of misrouting of retinogeniculostriate projections. As

Role of the dorsal attention network in distracter suppression based on features.

Selective attention allows us to prioritize the processing of relevant information and filter out irrelevant information. Human functional neuroimaging and lesion-based studies have highlighted the fronto-parietal dorsal attention network (DAN) as an important network in this process. In this study, we investigated the role of the DAN in distracter suppression by dynamically modifying the priority of visual information (target > high priority distracter > low priority distracter) based on features only. To this end, we collected fMRI data in 24 healthy subjects, who performed a feature-based v

Functional modulation of contralateral bias in early and object-selective areas after stroke of the occipital ventral cortices.

Object agnosia is a rare symptom, occurring mainly after bilateral damage of the ventral visual cortex. Most patients suffering from unilateral ventral lesions are clinically non-agnosic. Here, we studied the effect of unilateral occipito-temporal lesions on object categorization and its underlying neural correlates in visual areas. Thirteen non-agnosic stroke patients and twelve control subjects performed an event-related rapid object categorization task in the fMRI scanner where images were presented either to the left or to the right of a fixed point. Eight patients had intact central visua

Distinguishing and quantification of the human visual pathways using high-spatial-resolution diffusion tensor tractography.

Quantification of the living human visual system using MRI methods has been challenging, but several applications demand a reliable and time-efficient data acquisition protocol. In this study, we demonstrate the utility of high-spatial-resolution diffusion tensor fiber tractography (DTT) in reconstructing and quantifying the human visual pathways. Five healthy males, age range 24-37years, were studied after approval of the institutional review board (IRB) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. We acquired diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data with 1-mm slice thickness on a

Neuron recycling for learning the alphabetic principles.

AIMS: The main purpose of this paper is to discuss an approach to the phonic method of learning-teaching early literacy development, namely that the visual neurons must be recycled to recognize the small differences among pertinent letter features. In addition to the challenge of segmenting the speech chain and the syllable for learning the alphabetic principles, neuroscience has demonstrated another major challenge: neurons in mammals are programmed to process visual signals symmetrically. In order to develop early literacy, visual neurons must be recycled to overcome this initial programming

Image jitter enhances visual performance when spatial resolution is impaired.

PURPOSE: Visibility of low-spatial frequency stimuli improves when their contrast is modulated at 5 to 10 Hz compared with stationary stimuli. Therefore, temporal modulations of visual objects could enhance the performance of low vision patients who primarily perceive images of low-spatial frequency content. We investigated the effect of retinal-image jitter on word recognition speed and facial emotion recognition in subjects with central visual impairment. METHODS: Word recognition speed and accuracy of facial emotion discrimination were measured in volunteers with AMD under stationary and j

Atypical face processing in children with tuberous sclerosis complex.

There is a high incidence of autism in tuberous sclerosis complex. Given the evidence of impaired face processing in autism, the authors sought to investigate electrophysiological markers of face processing in children with tuberous sclerosis complex. The authors studied 19 children with tuberous sclerosis complex under age 4, and 20 age-matched controls, using a familiar-unfamiliar faces paradigm. Of the children, 6 with tuberous sclerosis complex (32%) had autism. Children with tuberous sclerosis complex showed a longer N290 latency than controls (276 ms vs 259 ms, P = .05) and also failed t

Facial asymmetry detection in patients with body dysmorphic disorder.

Cognitive-behavioral models of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) propose that individuals with BDD may possess a better or more developed sense of aestheticality than do individuals without BDD. Evidence for this proposition, however, is limited. One perceptual process that could contribute to heightened aestheticality is the ability to detect differences in symmetry. In this experiment we tested whether individuals with BDD (n=20), relative to individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD; n=20) and healthy controls (n=20), show an enhanced ability to detect differences in the symmetry of

Event-related potentials during preattentional processing of color stimuli.

To investigate whether visual mismatch negativity (VMMN) could be evoked in the preattentional condition, we designed an oddball task with different red color stimuli in visual modality. Electroencephalograms were recorded and VMMN and N2-P3 complex waveforms were analyzed. The results indicated that VMMN generated at occipital region with 110-180 ms peak latency, and N2b and P3a were just following VMMN with 170-300 and 400-450 ms latencies, respectively. VMMN, N2b, and P3a components were all affected by the amount of deviations between the standard stimuli and deviant stimuli. This study fu

Cerebral correlates of impaired grating perception in individual, psychophysically assessed human amblyopes.

We investigated neuronal correlates of amblyopic deficits resulting from early onset strabismus or anisometropia by monitoring individual responses in retinotopically mapped cortical visual areas with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in eight psychophysically assessed adult amblyopes. In lower visual areas (V1/V2), grating stimuli presented to the normal and the amblyopic eye evoked strong cortical responses, while responses to the amblyopic eye were progressively reduced in higher areas on the central visual pathway (V3a/VP; V4/V8; lateral occipital complex, LOC). A comparison of neural feature extraction methods for brain-machine interfaces.

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) have shown promise in augmenting people's control of their surroundings, especially for those suffering from paralysis due to neurological disorders. This paper describes an experiment using the rodent model to explore information available in neural signals recorded from chronically implanted intracortical microelectrode arrays. In offline experiments, a number of neural feature extraction methods were utilized to obtain neural activity vectors (NAVs) describing the activity of the underlying neural population while rats performed a discrimination task. Difficulties in the control of irrelevant visuospatial information in children with visuospatial learning disabilities.

This research tested the hypothesis that children's difficulties in visuospatial working memory (VSWM) may mirror difficulties found with verbal working memory tasks in other categories of children. Two experiments compared the number of correct responses and errors in groups of visuospatial learning disabled children (VSLD) and Controls who were engaged in an active task testing visuospatial working memory. Children were presented with sequences of positions on a 4x4 matrix and were subsequently asked to remember only the last position of each series. In the first Experiment, VSLD children sh

Visual word recognition in the left and right hemispheres: anatomical and functional correlates of peripheral alexias.

According to a simple anatomical and functional model of word reading, letters displayed in one hemifield are first analysed through a cascade of contralateral retinotopic areas, which compute increasingly abstract representations. Eventually, an invariant representation of letter identities is created in the visual word form area (VWFA), reproducibly located within the left occipito-temporal sulcus. The VWFA then projects to structures involved in phonological or lexico-semantic processing. This model yields detailed predictions on the reading impairments that may follow left occipitotemporal

Pr VECPs related to ciliary perfusion pressure in primary open angle glaucoma. A study using contact lenses to compensate for refraction changes during artificially raised IOP.

Pr VECP studies in glaucoma patients with the IOP raised artificially by the suction cup method have recently been performed by several authors, who arrived at different results. The reason for those differences may be the changes employed. The refraction changes depend on the shape of the suction cup and the height of the artificial IOP raise. By using contact lenses and a suitably shaped suction cup refraction changes could be compensated for. Studies of the pr VECP with suction cup IOP elevation and simultaneous compensation for refraction changes by applying contact lenses were made on 17

The pattern reversal VEP in short-gestation infants on taurine or taurine-free diet.

The visual evoked potential to flash stimulation has been studied in premature infants for many years. There have been no studies of the response to pattern reversal stimuli during the pre-term period, however. Twenty babies all born prematurely between 32 and 35 weeks post menstrual age had pattern reversal visual evoked potentials recorded on at least two occasions between the ages of 32.5 and 52 weeks post menstrual age with the first recording prior to reaching 40 weeks post menstrual age. The stimulator consisted of a small hand-held television with a 55 x 40 mm screen, and responses were

[Visuoverbal disconnection (optical aphasia) for objects, pictures, colors and faces with abstractive alexia].

The case is reported of a patient who, after a left occipital infarction, presented a deficit in naming visually presented objects with neither aphasia, nor perturbation in the perceptive and associative processing of visual informations. This visuo-verbal disconnection was accompanied by disturbance of the semantic function when this was explored via the visual channel. In addition the patient showed an alexia which could be described as an abstraction defect. Finally, the patient showed a deficit in naming colors and faces, without evidence for agnosia. This observation argues in favor of ma

The supramarginal and angular gyri underlie orthographic competence in Spanish language.

Orthographic competence allows automatic word recognition and reading fluency. To elucidate how the orthographic competence in Spanish-speaking adults might affect the neurofunctional mechanisms of visual word recognition, 32 young adults equally divided in two groups (HSS: High Spelling Skills, and LSS: Low Spelling Skills) were evaluated using fMRI methods, while they performed an orthographic recognition task involving pseudohomophones. HSS achieved significantly more correct responses and lower reaction times than LSS. Interestingly, LSS showed greater activation in the left angular and su

Pilot Study of AI-Assisted ANA Immunofluorescence Reading-Comparison with Classical Visual Interpretation.

Background: Antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) play a crucial role in diagnosing systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus. The recommended standard for ANA detection is indirect immunofluorescence testing (IIFT) using human epithelial (HEp-2) cells. Since visual interpretation (VI) of IIFT images is time-consuming and labor-intensive, research is focusing on automated interpretation systems that use artificial intelligence (AI). Methods: Consecutive serum samples (number of sera = 143) from routine clinical care were collected from patients visiting our tert
