The management of acute cervical spine injuries has traditionally used bed-based skeletal traction until all non-neurologic injuries have been evaluated. This treatment method substantially hinders the ability to transport patients and to perform imaging studies and surgical procedures. In contrast, early application of a halo/vest apparatus provides immediate cervical stabilization and facilitates the diagnostic work-up and treatment of the patients with multiple injuries. The records of all 78 patients admitted from February 1988 through June 1991 who had acute cervical spine fractures, subl

The lesions, infections, traumas, and new growths that affect the intratemporal portion of the facial nerve at all ages are examined and discussed. The facial nerve is shown to be extremely durable and capable of recovery. The management except in complete severence is conservative. Surgical intervention should be restricted in the early stages.

Maxillofacial trauma involves injury to the facial skeleton, dentition, and associated soft tissues. Although relatively uncommon, such trauma in pediatric patients presents unique challenges due to the potential for growth disturbance and long-term occlusal alteration. Differences in anatomy, biomechanics, and epidemiologic patterns between children and adults necessitate specialized diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Furthermore, advances in imaging, fixation materials, and surgical planning have transformed management strategies in this population. This article aims to provide an overvi

OBJECTIVE: We investigated free radical scavenging activity and the possible neuroprotective effect of Tokishakuyakusan (TJ-23) on facial motor nucleus (FMN) motoneurons after peripheral axotomy.
STUDY DESIGN: In 40 adult rats, the right facial nerve was transected at the level of the stylomastoid foramen. Following axotomy, the effects of TJ-23 on nitric oxide synthase were investigated using NADPH-d histochemistry. FMN motoneurons were counted bilaterally in sections stained with cresyl violet.
RESULTS: Rats administered TJ-23 exhibited clear suppression of injury-induced neuronal NADPH-d

CD44 is a cell adhesion molecule which plays an important role in cell movement and adhesion, e.g. in lymphocyte homing and tumour metastasis. Here we studied the expression of CD44 mRNA and protein immunoreactivity in the facial nucleus after nerve injury and during the ensuing regeneration. Transection of the facial nerve led to a strong up-regulation of CD44, peaking 4 days after injury on the motoneurons of the axotomized facial nucleus. Use of the polymerase chain reaction confirmed the de novo expression of CD44 and detected only the standard haematopoietic CD44 isoform. Western blotting

Facial nerve regeneration still lacks a well-defined and practical clinical intervention. The survival of central facial motoneuron is a critical component in the successful peripheral facial nerve regeneration. Endogenous GDNF is vital for facial nerve regeneration according to earlier investigations. Nevertheless, the low endogenous GDNF level makes it challenging to achieve therapeutic benefits. Thus, we crushed the main trunk of facial nerve in SD rats to provide a model of peripheral facial paralysis, and we administered exogenous GDNF and Rapa treatments. We observed changes in the anima

Hypoglossal-facial crossover is the most popular method of reconstructing the facial nerve in facial palsy resulting from proximal facial-nerve injury near the brainstem. Conventional hypoglossal-facial crossover involves performing a partial hypoglossal-nerve section or incision and an interpositional nerve graft to bridge the gap between the two nerves, which sometimes results in hemiglossal atrophy and its sequelae. Furthermore, the nerve graft may delay recovery and make facial reanimation weak. To solve these problems, we attempted to perform 'pure end-to-side anastomosis' (without sectio

BACKGROUND: The principal function of cranial nerve 7 (CN VII), the facial nerve, is to provide motor innervation to the muscles of facial expression. The temporal branch of the facial nerve primarily innervates the frontalis muscle, which raises the eyebrow.
OBJECTIVE: To present a case that illustrates the importance of facial nerve anatomy to skin surgery practice.
CONCLUSION: The relevant surgical anatomy of the temporal branch is reviewed, as well as clinical practice points around nerve damage in skin surgery.

Idiopathic facial palsy (Bell's palsy) is a spontaneous facial nerve palsy. It presents with a cluster of symptoms and alterations in superficial anatomy involving nerves, muscles, skin, and emotional expression. Although this palsy strongly affects the peripheral nervous system, no definitive studies have confirmed that it causes structural changes in the brain itself. Facial innervation presents a complex web of fibers, making surgical procedures in this region highly susceptible to injury. This narrative review summarizes the available literature to show how this complexity affects surgical

The present study describes 3 patients of previous facial trauma who have subsequently been treated with functional endoscopic sinus surgery. The authors want pay attention on the possible correlation between facial trauma and sinusitis. Such fractures can be the cause of onset of paranasal sinusitis or of worsening of a previous sinusitis. The correlation between these 2 pathologies could be due to the fact that facial fractures concern the anatomic structures of paranasal sinuses. The damage to these structures during the facial trauma and tissue regeneration after injury or surgical treatme

Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is characterized by involuntary, irregular contraction of the muscles innervated by one facial nerve. Usually, it is caused by facial nerve injury either due to microvascular compression or a posterior fossa tumor, but it also occurs without apparent cause. It is rare in children; no congenital cases have yet been reported. We report the first case of congenital HFS in a term newborn delivered by forceps after a normal labor. Multimodal evoked potentials, electroencephalogram, computed tomography of the petrous bone, as well as brain magnetic resonance imaging and angiog

The condition of patients sustaining penetrating neck trauma often appears deceptively stable, even when major structures have been injured. The clinician must identify patients who require treatment and limit invasive procedures in those without significant injuries. Angiography is often used to search for vascular damage following penetration of the neck and face. The charts of 401 hemodynamically stable patients with penetrating cervicofacial wounds who were evaluated by angiography followed, when necessary by either transcatheter arterial embolization and observation or surgery were review

The Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games highlighted the persistent risk of craniofacial injuries across multiple high-velocity winter sports. This editorial reviews the most clinically relevant injury events, including a severe periorbital skate-blade trauma resulting in zygomatic fracture during short-track speed skating, as well as concussive and cervical injury patterns observed in sliding and alpine disciplines. Despite advances in protective equipment, significant vulnerabilities remain, particularly in facial protection and impact mitigation. Current standards in several sports appe…
