Spinal Cord Infarction in a Young Patient After a Simple Stretching Maneuver: A Case Report of Rare Etiology and Diagnostic Challenges.

Spinal cord infarction is a rare and diagnostically challenging condition, particularly in young patients without significant trauma or identifiable vascular risk factors. It typically presents with acute motor deficits, impaired pain and temperature sensation, and relative preservation of proprioception. We report a case of a 17-year-old male who developed sudden bilateral upper limb weakness and numbness following a simple stretching maneuver while studying, during which an audible "pop" was noted. His symptoms rapidly progressed to involve the lower limbs, resulting in an inability to ambul…

The use of acoustic myography to assess changes in muscle control with ageing in healthy subjects ranging 20 to 79 years.

This study has used acoustic myography as a technique to assess not only the number of active fibres and their firing frequency, but also th … e extensor muscle (m.Biceps vs. m.Triceps). This study lends support to the published evidence that proprioception and postural stability are regulated to some extent by muscle spindles and that this process is age-related. The changes are identifiable in the acoustic myography parameters (E-score and ST-score) and are observed in a muscle-specific manner.

Posterior Shoulder Soft Tissue Stabilization Return to Play Criteria Vary Among Investigations: A Systematic Review.

ABSTRACT: Despite increasing rates of posterior shoulder instability surgery, return-to-play (RTP) rates vary widely. There is little availa … ified as follows: time (56%), strength (48%), range of motion (41%), sport-specific protocol (11%), proprioception (4%), and other (15%). Many studies used a combination of the above-listed criteria. We demonstrated there is little consensus regarding post-operative RTP criteria for posterior shoulder instability. Time, strength, and range of motion were the mos …

Cross-sectional associations between multisensory impairment and brain volumes in older adults: Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.

Sensory impairment and brain atrophy is common among older adults, increasing the risk of dementia. Yet, the degree to which multiple co-occurring sensory impairments (MSI across vision, proprioception, vestibular function, olfactory, and hearing) are associated with brain morphometry remain unexplored. Data were from 208 cognitively unimpaired participants (mean age 72 ± 10 years; 59% women) enrolled in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. Multiple linear regression models were used to estimate cross-sectional associations between MSI and regional brain imaging volumes. For each additio…

Editorial Commentary: Symptomatic Recurrent Instability of the Distal Radioulnar Joint After Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex Repair in Patients With Ulnar-Sided Wrist Pain May Be Related to Generalized Laxity.

An unstable distal radioulnar joint can cause ulnar-sided wrist pain. Stability of the distal radioulnar joint, which varies among individuals, is dependent on the bony structure of the sigmoid notch and the surrounding soft tissues, such as the interosseous membrane, the extensor carpi ulnaris tendon, the pronator quadratus, and the deep radioulnar ligaments. In particular, avulsions of the deep radioulnar ligaments lead to instability and disturbed wrist proprioception. In patients with ulnar-sided pain, a distiction must always be made between clinical instability and generalized laxity. Tr…

Axonal and Glial PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 Immunoreactivity in Human Clitoral Krause's Corpuscles.

Krause's corpuscles are typical of cutaneous mucous epithelia, like the lip vermillion or the glans clitoridis, and are associated with rapidly adapting low-threshold mechanoreceptors involved in gentle touch or vibration. PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 are transmembrane mechano-gated proteins that form a part of the cationic ion channels required for mechanosensitivity in mammalian cells. They are involved in somatosensitivity, especially in the different qualities of touch, but also in pain and proprioception. In the present study, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence were used to analyze the occu…

Thoracic spinal extradural arachnoid cyst causing Brown-Sequard-like syndrome: a rare case report and review of literature.

Spinal extradural arachnoid cysts are rare benign lesions occurring along the cerebrospinal axis. They may be associated with pain or varying degrees of neurological compressive symptoms. Brown-Sequard syndrome is a rare sequalae, where there is ipsilateral upper motor neuron paralysis with loss of proprioception as well as contralateral loss of pain and temperature sensation below the lesion. We present a 33-year-old female with a 6-month history of worsening right lower limb weakness and a 2-month history of right lower limb pain. Motor examination revealed right lower limb weakness as well …

Rare Sensory Ataxic Variant of Guillain-Barre Syndrome: A Case Report.

The sensory ataxic variant of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a rare subtype, with limited case reports available. We present the case of a previously healthy 26-year-old female university student who presented with bilateral foot numbness and unsteady gait for five days, without limb weakness. There were no signs of infection or recent history suggestive of infection. Examination revealed reduced pain and light touch sensation, as well as proprioception impairment in the bilateral distal lower limb, accompanied by an ataxic gait. Bilateral upper and lower limb power was normal. Cerebrospinal…

A pilot study combining noninvasive spinal neuromodulation and activity-based neurorehabilitation therapy in children with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common pediatric motor disability with multiple symptoms and etiologies. CP is exhibited through sensorimoto … the dysfunctional connectivity between supraspinal and spinal networks using the normally developed proprioception. We demonstrate that the intervention was associated with clinically and statistically significant improvement in GMFM-88 scores in all children, thus meeting the prespecified primary endpoint. However, the improvement with ABNT alone needs further …

Hemidystonia after Pontine Hemorrhage Successfully Treated with Pharmacotherapy and Intensive Rehabilitation: a Case Report.

Dystonia is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary contraction of muscles resulting in repetitive or twisting movements. Dystonia is generally caused by basal ganglia dysfunction. Recent studies have reported an association between dystonia and brainstem disorders. However, the pathological mechanism is uncertain, and detailed management strategies are limited. Here, we report a case of hemidystonia with abnormal posture and impaired proprioception after pontine hemorrhage that was effectively treated with pharmacotherapy combined with early intensive comprehensive rehabilitation. A …
