Inherited Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathy in a Border Collie, Interest of Oclacitinib for the Control of Self-Mutilation.

Sensory and autonomic neuropathy was diagnosed in a five-month-old Border Collie puppy, who presented with progressive self-mutilation, proprioceptive ataxia and urinary incontinence. In the Border Collie, sensory neuropathy is different from what is observed in acral mutilation syndrome, as the genetic mutation is linked to an inversion disrupting the FAM134B gene. Diagnosis was based on history, clinical signs and genetic testing. The prognosis of sensory neuropathies is poor and no curative treatment is available. In the present case, oclacitinib was started for symptomatic treatment of the

Scoping review of equity considerations in digitally enabled patient education interventions for self-managing chronic musculoskeletal pain.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Patient education is critically important for supporting self-management of chronic musculoskeletal pain, but it is unclear if and how existing tools or interventions are meeting diverse pain management needs. Therefore, this review aimed to identify and characterise digitally enabled pain education tools or interventions and explore the extent to which they meet diverse needs. METHODS: We searched five electronic databases, including MEDLINE (via Ovid; Annexure A), Embase (via Ovid), CINAHL, PsycInfo and Google Scholar in January 2025, and screened articles based o

An outreach strategy to increase uptake of vaginal self-sampling for cervical cancer screening in older French women: The RIDECA interventional research protocol.

BACKGROUND: In France, approximately 40% of women, including menopausal women, do not participate in cervical cancer screening. Many studies and meta-analyses have shown that self-sampling devices for high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) testing are valuable tools to increase participation. The success of self-sampling screening strategies depends on several factors, including the manner and circumstances in which the women are invited to participate. The acceptability and effectiveness of these strategies should be evaluated before further implementation. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective

National variability in Americans' COVID-19 protective behaviors: Implications for vaccine roll-out.

Protective behaviors such as mask wearing and physical distancing are critical to slow the spread of COVID-19, even in the context of vaccine scale-up. Understanding the variation in self-reported COVID-19 protective behaviors is critical to developing public health messaging. The purpose of the study is to provide nationally representative estimates of five self-reported COVID-19 protective behaviors and correlates of such behaviors. In this cross-sectional survey study of US adults, surveys were administered via internet and telephone. Adults were surveyed from April 30-May 4, 2020, a time o

The challenges of defining sample adequacy in an era of HPV based cervical screening.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of Human Papillomavirus based cervical screening continues apace on a global scale. Understanding the basis and burden of inadequate or invalid samples is important to ensure confidence in high quality laboratory results and inform the development of new technologies. Here we present population based data from Scotland and Denmark which detail the extent of invalid samples for HPV detection in both clinician-taken and self-taken samples. As a comparator we report on the rate of inadequate cytology preparations in both countries. METHODS: The proportion of sample

A novel speculum-free imaging strategy for visualization of the internal female lower reproductive system.

Fear of the speculum and feelings of vulnerability during the gynecologic exams are two of the biggest barriers to cervical cancer screening for women. To address these barriers, we have developed a novel, low-cost tool called the Callascope to reimagine the gynecological exam, enabling clinician and self-imaging of the cervix without the need for a speculum. The Callascope contains a 2 megapixel camera and contrast agent spray mechanism housed within a form factor designed to eliminate the need for a speculum during contrast agent administration and image capture. Preliminary bench testing fo

How does a single session group intervention improve sexual function in ovarian cancer survivors? A secondary analysis of effects of self-efficacy, knowledge and emotional distress.

Although sexual dysfunction after ovarian cancer (OC) treatment is a common side effect, intervention for this issue remains largely unaddressed in the literature. To address this gap, we recently developed and tested a theory-driven psychosexual intervention that successfully improved sexual function in OC survivors. This study is a secondary analysis to determine whether the intervention effects were consistent with our theoretical model. We expected that improved self-efficacy, sexual knowledge and emotional distress would relate to improved sexual function, and that effects of sexual knowl

Self-reported mini olfactory questionnaire (Self-MOQ): A simple and useful measurement for the screening of olfactory dysfunction.

OBJECTIVES: Olfactory dysfunction is a common problem. However, too little attention has been paid to questionnaires used to evaluate quantitative olfactory dysfunction. Therefore, the current study aimed to develop a simple self-reported Mini Olfactory Questionnaire (Self-MOQ) for the screening of quantitative olfactory dysfunction in clinical practice. METHODS: Two hundred and eighty-five patients who had subjective complaints of olfactory disorder participated. The Sniffin' Sticks test score was used to define functional anosmia, hyposmia, or normosmia. We assessed the factor structure as

Prevalence of type-specific human papillomavirus in endocervical, upper and lower vaginal, perineal and vaginal self-collected specimens: Implications for vaginal self-collection.

To determine why a vaginal self-collection tested for high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) by Hybrid Capture 2(R) (hc2) has lower sensitivity and specificity for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia Grade 2 or worse (> or = CIN 2), we collected 5 specimens (endocervix, upper and lower vagina, perineum, vaginal self-collection) from 2,625 women. Endocervical and self-collected specimens had HR-HPV tests by hc2. All 5 anogenital specimens were tested for 37 HPV genotypes [Linear Array(R), (LA)] from 397 women hc2 positive in endocervical or self-collected specimens and for a randomly selected 7

The "3 in 1" Study: Pooling Self-Taken Pharyngeal, Urethral, and Rectal Samples into a Single Sample for Analysis for Detection of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis in Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Triple-site testing (using pharyngeal, rectal, and urethral/first-void urine samples) for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis using nucleic acid amplification tests detects greater numbers of infections among men who have sex with men (MSM). However, triple-site testing represents a cost pressure for services. MSM over 18 years of age were eligible if they requested testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), reported recent sexual contact with either C. trachomatis or N. gonorrhoeae, or had symptoms of an STI. Each patient underwent standard-of-care (SOC) triple-site testi

The Cost-Effectiveness of Cervical Self-Sampling to Improve Routine Cervical Cancer Screening: The Importance of Respondent Screening History and Compliance.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing allows women to self-collect cervico-vaginal cells at home (i.e., self-sampling). Using primary data from a randomized pilot study, we evaluated the long-term consequences and cost-effectiveness of using self-sampling to improve participation to routine cervical cancer screening in Norway. METHODS: We compared a strategy reflecting screening participation (using reminder letters) to strategies that involved mailing self-sampling device kits to women noncompliant to screening within a 5- or 10-year period under two scenarios: (A) self-sampling res

From novice to expert: confidence and activity status determine heart failure self-care performance.

BACKGROUND: In a previous, small, mixed-methods study, heart failure patients were described as novice, expert, or inconsistent in self-care. In that study, self-care types differed in experience, confidence, attitudes, and skill. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to validate the novice-to-expert self-care typology and to identify determinants of the heart failure self-care types. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed using data from 689 adults with heart failure (61 ± 2.5 years; 36% female, 50% New York Heart Association class III). Operator perceptions of acceptability of point-of-care hepatitis C RNA testing as a tool for streamlining the care cascade.

BACKGROUND: Point-of-care testing for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection improves access to testing, facilitates same-day results, reduces loss to follow-up, and streamlines access to treatment. This analysis sought to understand the perspectives of point-of-care HCV RNA testing operators regarding acceptability of point-of-care testing as a healthcare intervention for streamlining the HCV care cascade. METHODS: Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with trained and competent point-of-care HCV RNA testing operators (clinical and nonclinical workers) about delivery of molecular poi
