Effect of phonemic perception training on the speech production and phonological awareness skills of children with expressive phonological delay.

Children with expressive phonological delays often possess poor underlying perceptual knowledge of the sound system and show delayed development of segmental organization of that system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the benefits of a perceptual approach to the treatment of expressive phonological delay. Thirty-four preschoolers with moderate or severe expressive phonological delays received 16 treatment sessions in addition to their regular speech-language therapy. The experimental group received training in phonemic perception, letter recognition, letter-sound association, and

Effects of presentation mode and repeated familiarization on intelligibility of dysarthric speech.

Clinical measures of speech intelligibility are widely used as one means of characterizing the speech of individuals with dysarthria. Many variables associated with both the speaker and the listener contribute to what is actually measured as intelligibility. The present study explored the effects of presentation modality (audiovisual vs. audio-only information) and the effects of speaker-specific familiarization across 4 trials on the intelligibility of speakers with mild and severe dysarthria associated with cerebral palsy. Results revealed that audiovisual information did not enhance intelli

Breadth and depth of diversity in Minnesota: challenges to clinical competency.

This study explored the impact of recent demographic changes on clinical service delivery in the state of Minnesota. A Web-based survey was used to ask speech-language pathologists in Minnesota about their training, clinical caseloads, and professional experiences with respect to diversity. Primary survey goals were to (a) determine if, and how, recent changes in the overall state demographics were reflected on caseloads of speech-language pathologists, and (b) identify challenges clinicians faced in meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse population. The authors considered the breadth or

Predictors of phonological change following intervention.

To date, predictor variables strongly associated with phonological change as a result of intervention have not been identified. The purpose of this study was to determine the best predictor or combination of predictors of change in percentage of consonants correct (PCC; L. D. Shriberg and J. Kwiatkowski, 1982) as a result of speech-language intervention for a group of 20 participants and to replicate this procedure with a second group of 20. Participants were preschool children, ages 3;0 (years;months) to 5;11, with impairments in phonology and morphosyntax who received intervention focused on

Effects of intensive voice treatment (the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment [LSVT]) on ataxic dysarthria: a case study.

This study examined the effects of intensive voice treatment (the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment [LSVT]) on ataxic dysarthria in a woman with cerebellar dysfunction secondary to thiamine deficiency. Perceptual and acoustic measures were made on speech samples recorded just before the LSVT program was administered, immediately after it was administered, and at 9 months follow-up. Results indicate short- and long-term improvement in phonatory and articulatory functions, speech intelligibility, and overall communication and job-related activity following LSVT. This study's findings provide initial

Effects of voicing and syntactic complexity on sign expression in adductor spasmodic dysphonia.

Clients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) tend to exhibit inter- and intraclient variability of signs and symptoms. This variability may result in inaccurate assessment of severity. Accurate assessment of severity requires knowledge concerning the factors that affect the expression of ADSD signs and symptoms. This study examined ADSD sign expression as a function of voicing and syntactic complexity. Fifteen ADSD participants and 15 control participants completed a task consisting of 30 sentences. ADSD signs were significantly more frequent in predominantly voiced sentences than in predo

Comparative Assessment of Orofacial Myofunction, Strength, and Quality of Life in Children With and Without Anterior Open Bite: The OMBIT Study.

PURPOSE: Anterior open bite (AOB) is a multifactorial malocclusion frequently associated with nonnutritive sucking habits (NNSHs) and orofacial dysfunctions. However, little is known about the specific orofacial strength and endurance profile in affected children. This study evaluated myofunctional history, orofacial myofunctional status, orofacial strength, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in children in the mixed dentition stage with AOB, compared to controls without AOB. METHOD: Sixteen children with AOB in the mixed dentition stage (Mage = 8.2 years) and 16 age- and gender

Reading After Traumatic Brain Injury: Shifts in Engagement, Purpose, and Format Across Everyday Material Types.

PURPOSE: Reading is central to adult participation in everyday life, yet little is known about how everyday reading habits change following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Prior research has focused primarily on reading speed and comprehension, with less attention to real-world reading behavior. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare everyday reading habits in adults with mild TBI, moderate-severe TBI, and no history of TBI. METHOD: Survey data from a sequential mixed-methods study of reading after TBI were analyzed for 170 adults with mild TBI, 55 with moderate-severe TBI, and 3

Effectiveness of Abstract Semantic Associative Network Training (AbSANT) in improving lexical retrieval in Mandarin-speaking aphasia: A multiple-baseline single-case study.

PURPOSE: Semantic Associative Network Training (AbSANT) is evidence-based in alphabetic languages, but its applicability to Mandarin-speaking individuals with aphasia remains unclear. Since Mandarin compound words often share morphemes across abstract and concrete concepts, the morphological structure of Mandarin may uniquely enhance semantic generalisation. METHOD: Using a multiple-baseline single-case design, we evaluated treatment outcomes via effect sizes for two participants with anomic aphasia) and Wernicke's aphasia. RESULT: Both participants significantly improved in retrieving abstr

Interrupted Time Series Analysis of the Efficacy of Bilingual Abstract Semantic Associative Network Training.

PURPOSE: In response to the need for more appropriate anomia treatment materials for bilingual persons with aphasia (BPWAs), we have created linguistically and culturally appropriate versions of AbSANT (Abstract Semantic Associative Network Training) for several languages that we call BAbSANT (Bilingual Abstract Semantic Associative Network Training). BAbSANT has now been conducted with 15 BPWAs in six different language combinations. The purposes of this study were to determine whether BAbSANT produces (a) similar within-language treatment effects as AbSANT and (b) cross-language treatment ef

A Function-Led Tailored Speech-Language Intervention in Primary Progressive Aphasia: A Retrospective Observational Pre-Post Study From Routine Clinical Practice.

PURPOSE: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects language abilities. Since no curative or pharmacological treatments are currently available, speech-language therapy represents one of the few clinical intervention options. Furthermore, evidence from routine clinical practice is needed to better characterize language changes associated with tailored, person-centered speech-language therapy approaches in PPA. The aim of this retrospective observational pre-post study was to explore baseline-to-follow-up changes associated with a function-led tailored speech-

Inside Semantic Feature Analysis: A Within-Trial Analysis of Feature Quantity and Quality.

PURPOSE: Aphasia rehabilitation increasingly emphasizes the importance of understanding the mechanisms and ingredients underlying behavioral interventions. Semantic feature analysis (SFA) is a commonly used intervention for anomia in aphasia, but there is little evidence directly examining its active ingredients. Using within-trial responses during SFA, we sought to explore how generating semantic features might facilitate naming improvements. METHOD: A retrospective analysis evaluated data collected from a clinical trial focused on intensive SFA treatment for individuals with chronic aphasia
