Surface Wipe Sampling of Hazardous Medicinal Products: A European Interlaboratory Comparison Study.

Workplace monitoring of hazardous medicinal products (HMPs) using surface wipe sampling is becoming common practice in many European hospitals and pharmacies. However, no independent quality control is available to validate wiping procedures and analytical methods. This study aimed to conduct a Europe-wide interlaboratory comparison (ILC) program to independently and blindly assess laboratory performance and variability in HMP detection. Four European laboratories participated in the study. Six HMPs-cyclophosphamide, etoposide, gemcitabine, ifosfamide, methotrexate, and paclitaxel-were prepare

How we understand fully the supply, demand, and harm reduction in drugs policy in Vietnam?

Since the 1990s, Vietnam has begun prioritising preventing and combating drug-related crimes (supply reduction) and rehabilitating drug users (demand reduction). In the 2000s, harm reduction approaches in relation to drug control began to be recognised as one of Vietnam's opiate substitution therapy methods before embarking on greater drug policy reform in the early 2010s. In implementing the ideology of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the anti-narcotic police forces often apply a zero-tolerance approach to drug traffickers and identify drug users as a priority applies a zero-tolerance approac

Efficacy of Social Norm Interventions on Addictive Behaviours-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomised Controlled Trials.

Mental health-related behaviours including addictive behaviours contribute significantly to the global burden of disease. Social norm interventions appear to be a cost-effective means of reducing addictive behaviour. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the efficacy of social norm interventions for addictive behaviours. We searched the databases Medline and PsycInfo from inception to April 2024 as well as reference lists of eligible studies and related systematic reviews for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy of social norm interventions for addictive b

The mediating role of self-regulation on the link between child maltreatment and later substance use among Latinx youth.

BACKGROUND: Children who experience maltreatment are at heightened risk for substance use initiation and mental health disorders later in life. Few studies have assessed the relationship between child maltreatment and substance use among Latinx youth. OBJECTIVE: The current study assessed the potential mediating effect of three aspects of self-regulation (emotional, behavioral, and cognitive) on the association between child maltreatment and substance use and examined whether effects varied depending on maltreatment type and severity. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This study involved a random sa

Clinical effects of intravenous bupropion misuse reported to a regional poison center.

Bupropion is an antidepressant medication with expanding indications including smoking cessation, weight loss, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and amphetamine dependence. Despite its increasing popularity among providers, it has a well-known narrow therapeutic window which can lead to delayed onset of symptoms with extended-release formulations and devastating consequences in overdose. We have noticed some patients misusing bupropion via intravenous use and had difficulty guiding decisions regarding clinical monitoring in these patients. As this route ent

Beyond face-to-face individual counseling: A systematic review on alternative modes of motivational interviewing in substance abuse treatment and prevention.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to synthesize the evidence on the effectiveness of motivational interviewing (MI), delivered in modes other than face-to-face individual counseling, in preventing and treating substance abuse related behaviors. METHODS: Four databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, PsycINFO, ISI Web of Science and Cochrane Library) were searched for randomised clinical trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effectiveness of alternative modes of MI (other than face-to-face individual counseling) in preventing and treating substance abuse. Eligible studies were rated on methodological quali

Pharmacological treatment of schizophrenia with comorbid substance use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: While antipsychotics remain the cornerstone of treatment for schizophrenic patients with comorbid substance use disorder (SUD), such treatment is nonetheless complicated by frequent medical comorbidity and poor adherence to medication. AREAS COVERED: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on the efficacy of antipsychotics for the treatment of schizophrenic patients with comorbid SUD are reviewed and analysed on the basis of a systematic literature search (PubMed) ranging from 1985 to 2015. On the same basis, findings from RCTs on the efficacy of psychotropic and other medications u

[The dual process model of addiction. Towards an integrated model?].

BACKGROUND: Neurobiology and cognitive psychology have provided us with a dual process model of addiction. According to this model, behavior is considered to be the dynamic result of a combination of automatic and controlling processes. In cases of addiction the balance between these two processes is severely disturbed. Automated processes will continue to produce impulses that ensure the continuance of addictive behavior. Weak, reflective or controlling processes are both the reason for and the result of the inability to forgo addiction. AIM: To identify features that are common to current n

Brain function of heroin addicts after withdrawal.

OBJECTIVE: To explore what brain regions are modulated by heroin addiction and withdrawal. METHODS: We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the brain function in 15 heroin-dependent patients 3 days (acute) and 1 month (protracted) after heroin abstinence. Sixteen normal controls were included. RESULTS: The blood oxygen level-dependent signal in the orbitofrontal cortex of the brain of heroin-dependent patients was significantly elevated 3 days after the withdrawal. Hyperfunction of the orbitofrontal cortex declined 1 month after the withdrawal. CONCLUSION: Heroin-depend

The role of the therapeutic alliance in the treatment of substance misuse: a critical review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: In the past two decades, a number of studies investigating the role of the therapeutic alliance in drug treatment have been published and it is timely that their findings are brought together in a comprehensive review. AIMS: This paper has two principal aims: (1) to assess the degree to which the relationship between drug user and counsellor predicts treatment outcome and (2) to examine critically the evidence on determinants of the quality of the alliance. METHODS: Peer-reviewed research located through the literature databases Medline, PsycInfo and Ovid Full Text Mental Health

[Urine analysis for legal confirmation in opiate addicts].

Urine samples of 31 probands who had come in conflict with the Dangerous Drugs act and therefore had to take part in urinalysis tests where analysed during a period of 34 months. The purpose of this study was to find out whether urinalysis testing can reduce drug abuse. The urine samples were tested on morphine/codeine, cannabis and barbiturates. 28 out of 31 persons were to be tested on morphine, 13 on cannabis and 26 on barbiturates. 32% of the persons tested on morphine showed no positive results during the whole period of investigation. 3% had continuous relapses (greater than 30% positive

Catechol-O-methyltransferase and dopamine receptor D4 gene variants: Possible association with substance abuse in Bangladeshi male.

Genetic risk of substance abuse is encoded mainly by central neurochemical pathways(mostly dopaminergic system) related to reinforcement and reward. In this study a functionalpolymorphism in Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) (Val158Met) and the Dopamine receptor D4 gene (DRD4) (120 bp tandem duplication) has been studied in substance abused subjects. The study was carried out with 183 substance abused subjects and 175 healthy persons with no history of substance abuse. DNA was extracted and polymorphisms were analyzed using allele-specific PCR. The impact of these two polymorphisms was also

Prenatal exposure to cigarette smoke or alcohol and cerebellum volume in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and typical development.

Prenatal exposure to teratogenic substances, such as nicotine or alcohol, increases the risk of developing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). To date, studies examining this relationship have used symptom scales as outcome measures to assess the effect of prenatal exposure, and have not investigated the neurobiological pathways involved. This study explores the effect of prenatal exposure to cigarettes or alcohol on brain volume in children with ADHD and typically developing controls. Children with ADHD who had been exposed prenatally to either substance were individually matched

Changes in drug use in European cities during early COVID-19 lockdowns - A snapshot from wastewater analysis.

The COVID-19 outbreak has forced countries to introduce severe restrictive measures to contain its spread. In particular, physical distancing and restriction of movement have had important consequences on human behaviour and potentially also on illicit drug use and supply. These changes can be associated with additional risks for users, in particular due to reduced access to prevention and harm reduction activities. Furthermore, there have been limitations in the amount of data about drug use which can be collected due to restrictions. To goal of this study was to obtain information about pote

Imported fenproporex-based diet pills from Brazil: a report of two cases.

Banned amphetamine-based anorectics are illicitly imported into the United States (US), but little is known regarding the harm these diet pills pose to US residents. A 26-year-old woman using imported diet pills presented with a two-year history of intermittent chest pains, palpitations, headaches and insomnia. Urine toxicology screen detected amphetamines and benzodiazepines. Fenproporex and chlordiazepoxide were detected in her pills. Her symptoms resolved after she stopped using diet pills. A 38-year-old man using imported diet pills presented after his occupational urine screen was signifi
