Swallowing performance of elderly people and sociodemographic, cognitive and language factors.

PURPOSE: To analyze the correlation between swallowing, language and cognition performance and describe the sociodemographic data of elderly people without previous neurological disorders. METHODS: Analytical cross-sectional study, with non-probabilistic sample for convenience and data collection by telecall. The aspiration screening test (Yale Swallow Protocol) was used to identify and exclude elderly people at risk of aspiration. Then, sociodemographic data were collected, and instruments were applied: activity of daily living (IADLs), risk of dysphagia (EAT-10), cognitive screening (Mini M…

Reliability and Validation of the PFIQ-7 and PFDI-20 in the Luganda Language.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) impact women worldwide and are assessed using instruments such as the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory (PFDI-20) and Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire (PFIQ-7). There are no known valid PFD instruments in Uganda. This study's purpose was to translate and test the reliability and validity of the PFDI-20 and PFIQ-7 in Luganda. It was predicted that these instruments would be reliable and valid to assess the presence and impact of PFD in parous Luganda-speaking women. METHODS: The translated PFDI-20 and PFIQ-7 were administered to parous

The influence of temperament and perinatal factors on language development: a longitudinal study.

Early language development is characterized by large individual variation. Several factors were proposed to contribute to individual pathways of language acquisition in infancy and childhood. One of the biologically based explaining factors is temperament, however, the exact contributions and the timing of the effects merits further research. Pre-term status, infant sex, and environmental factors such as maternal education and maternal language are also involved. Our study aimed to investigate the longitudinal relationship between infant temperament and early language development, also conside…

[Studies on the association of genes with language disorders in the post-genomic era].

Since genetic research entered the post-genomic era, the high heritability of language disorders has been confirmed. A variety of genetic-related diseases may cause various types of language disorders in children and/or adults. This article has summarized language disorders and their underlying mechanisms by searching the Web of Science database over the last decade, and combed the genetic researches for dyslexia, frontotemporal degeneration, specific language disorder, childhood speech apraxia and other single diseases that are strongly associated with the language disorders. It also provided…

Language and communication functioning in children and adolescents with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

The corpus callosum, the largest white matter inter-hemispheric pathway, is involved in language and communication. In a cohort of 15 children and adolescents (8-15 years) with developmental absence of the corpus callosum (AgCC), this study aimed to describe language and everyday communication functioning, and explored the role of anatomical factors, social risk, and non-verbal IQ in these outcomes. Standardised measures of language and everyday communication functioning, intellectual ability and social risk were used. AgCC classification and anterior commissure volume, a potential alternative…

Different computational relations in language are captured by distinct brain systems.

A critical way for humans to acquire information is through language, yet whether and how language experience drives specific neural semantic representations is still poorly understood. We considered statistical properties captured by 3 different computational principles of language (simple co-occurrence, network-(graph)-topological relations, and neural-network-vector-embedding relations) and tested the extent to which they can explain the neural patterns of semantic representations, measured by 2 functional magnetic resonance imaging experiments that shared common semantic processes. Distinc…

Interindividual variability and consistency of language mapping paradigms for presurgical use.

Most functional MRI studies of language processing have focussed on group-level inference, but for clinical use, the aim is to predict outcomes at an individual patient level. This requires being able to identify atypical activation and understand how differences relate to language outcomes. A language mapping paradigm that selectively activates left hemisphere language regions in healthy individuals allows atypical activation in a patient to be more easily identified. We investigated the interindividual variability and consistency of language activation in 12 healthy participants using three …

Functional connectivity of the language area in migraine: a preliminary classification model.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a complex disorder characterized by debilitating headaches. Despite its prevalence, its pathophysiology remains unkn … aracteristic curve (AUC-ROC) of 0.68, which rose to 0.86 following hyperparameter tuning. FC of the language network was most predictive of the model's classification, though patients with migraine also demonstrated differences in the accessory language, visual and medial temporal regions. Several analogous regions in the right hemisphere demonstrated chan …

Language development trajectories in young children with developmental disabilities in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Language development is critical to various outcomes in young children with developmental disabilities (DD), including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and non-ASD delays. However, language development trajectories in young children with DD in non-Western populations remain unclear. AIMS: To investigate the language development trajectories of young children with DD in Taiwan. We investigated the relationship between trajectory class assignment and diagnostic outcomes (ASD or non-ASD delays) at 3 years after enrollment in the study and the differences in early abilities among childr…

The language dependency of /m/ in native Dutch and non-native English.

In forensic speaker comparisons, the current practice is to try to avoid comparisons between speech fragments in different languages. However, globalization requires an exploration of individual speech features that may show phonetic consistency across a speaker's languages. We predicted that the bilabial nasal /m/ may be minimally affected by the language spoken due to the involvement of the rigid nasal cavity in combination with a lack of fixed oral articulatory targets. The results show that indeed, L1 Dutch speakers (N = 53) had similar nasal formants and formant bandwidths when speaking i…

Complex Language Use in Children With Hearing Loss: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: Understanding what is known about the language profiles of children with hearing loss (CHL) is vital so that researchers and teachers can identify the specific complex syntactic structures that CHL may struggle to master. An understanding of which aspects of complex syntax pose difficulties for CHL is necessary to inform the kind of intervention that will facilitate learning complex syntax for this cohort of children. This scoping review aims to identify what is currently known about the complex syntax use of CHL who communicate through spoken language, and uncover gaps in the literat…

Acquisition of Mandarin long passives by children with developmental language disorder.

This study investigated the comprehension and production of long passives (i.e. bei-constructions with an overt agent) in Mandarin-speaking children with developmental language disorder (DLD). Seventeen preschool children with DLD (1 female; mean age: 61 months old) and 23 typically developing (TD) children (6 females; mean age: 62 months old) participated in a sentence-picture matching task (for comprehension) and an elicited production task. Their nonverbal working memory (NVWM) was measured with the fourth edition of the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence. Results showed t…

The Language-Cognition Interface in Atypical Development: Support for an Integrative Approach.

BACKGROUND: Links between the mastery of complex syntax and more general cognitive abilities (e.g., working memory [WM] and attention) are widely reported for both typically developing children and children with atypical language development, such as developmental language disorder (DLD). These observations have resulted in debates about whether the locus of breakdown in populations with known syntactic impairment is situated in a specific language system or a more general cognitive system. Recently, a hybrid model of language acquisition, the parallel combination approach (PCA), in which both…

The shared genetic architecture and evolution of human language and musical rhythm.

Rhythm and language-related traits are phenotypically correlated, but their genetic overlap is largely unknown. Here, we leveraged two large-scale genome-wide association studies performed to shed light on the shared genetics of rhythm (N=606,825) and dyslexia (N=1,138,870). Our results reveal an intricate shared genetic and neurobiological architecture, and lay groundwork for resolving longstanding debates about the potential co-evolution of human language and musical traits.

Effect of biomedical complications on very and extremely preterm children's language.

INTRODUCTION: Very and extremely preterm children have been found to show delays in the development of language in early years. In some investigations, however, a rigorous control of biomedical complications, such as Periventricular Leukomalacia (PVL), Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH) or Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD), does not always exist. For that reason, a confounding effect of low gestational age and biomedical complications may lead to erroneous conclusions about the effect of gestational age. METHODS: In this investigation we compare language development [use of words, sentence comp…
