The behavioral characteristics of Sotos syndrome.

In this study we describe the levels of clinically significant behavior in participants with Sotos syndrome relative to three matched contrast groups in which the behavioral phenotype is well documented (Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD; Prader-Willi, and Down syndromes). Parents and carers of 38 individuals with Sotos syndrome (mean age = 17.3; SD = 9.36), completed questionnaires regarding self-injury, aggression, repetitive behavior, autism spectrum phenomenology, overactivity, impulsivity and mood, interest and pleasure. Individuals with Sotos syndrome showed an increased risk of self-injurio

Effects of parent-child interaction therapy dosage on child and parent outcomes: differentiating child-directed interaction and parent-directed interaction session impacts in child welfare-involved families.

BACKGROUND: Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) improves parenting and child behavior, yet little is known about how dosage of its two phases, warm relationship building focused child-directed interaction (CDI) sessions and safe, effective discipline skills-focused parent-directed interaction (PDI) sessions, contributes to outcomes, particularly in child welfare-involved families. Understanding these dose-response patterns can clarify the pathways through which PCIT produces change. METHODS: In a sample of 204 child welfare families with young children, we examined the dose-response relat

Parent Management Training Augmentation to Address Coercive and Disruptive Behavior in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Coercive and disruptive behaviors commonly interfere with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) trials among youths with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Although evidence supports parent management training (PMT) for reducing disruptive behavior, no group-based PMT interventions exist for OCD-related disruptive behaviors. We studied feasibility and effectiveness of group-based adjunctive PMT among non-randomized, OCD-affected families receiving family-based group CBT. Linear mixed models estimated treatment effects across OCD-related and parenting outcomes at post-treatment and 1-month follo

Incidence and comorbidities of disruptive behavior disorders diagnosed in Finnish specialist psychiatric services.

PURPOSE: Disruptive behavior disorders (DBD), including oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD), are some of the most common psychiatric conditions in childhood. Despite this, there has been limited research on DBDs. We examined the incidence, comorbidity and gender differences of DBDs diagnosed by specialist services. METHOD: This was a nationwide register study of 570,815 children and adolescents born in 1996-2005. The 7050 individuals diagnosed with DBD by specialist healthcare services were matched to 26,804 controls. RESULTS: By the age of 15, the cumulative incide

Identification of Modifiable Social and Behavioral Factors Associated With Childhood Cognitive Performance.

IMPORTANCE: Inequities in social environments are likely associated with a large portion of racial disparities in childhood cognitive performance. Identification of the specific exposures associated with cognitive development is needed to inform prevention efforts. OBJECTIVE: To identify modifiable factors associated with childhood cognitive performance. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This longitudinal pregnancy cohort study included 1503 mother-child dyads who were enrolled in the University of Tennessee Health Science Center-Conditions Affecting Neurodevelopment and Learning in Early L

Disruptive Behavior, Global Developmental Delay, and Obesity in a 5-Year-Old Boy with a Chromosome Microduplication.

Ryan is a 5-year-old boy who was seen in a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics clinic for disruptive behavior and developmental delay. His medical history was notable for a tethered spinal cord repaired at age 4 months, alternating exotropia with multiple surgeries, and obesity (body mass index at 99%). Ryan's development was globally delayed. He sat at age 10 months and walked at 24 months. An Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Toddler module (ADOS-T) was completed at age 19 months and demonstrated little-to-no concern for autism spectrum disorder.Ryan's parents described behavioral chall

[Pedophilia--a review of literature, casuistics, doubts].

The main purpose of this article is presentation of several basic issues related to the phenomenon of child sexual molesters and recognition of pedophilia as a significant social problem. The article, supplemented by casuistic illustration showing adolescents with sexual behavior disorders is giving rise to the following question: do they progress in their inappropriate behaviors to grow into adult molesters or do they stop anywhere along the way of their development? Casuistry, in the intention of the authors, is the background for discussion about prevention of child sexual abuse. This artic

Health behavior and related factors in adolescents with a history of abortion and never-pregnant adolescents.

Although prevention of unintended births among adolescents is health promoting, abortion, as one of those methods, has not been examined from a health promotion perspective. The authors describe and compare health behaviors, problem-solving appraisal, self-image, age, and use of contraceptives at first and most recent coitus in adolescents with a history of abortion and never-pregnant adolescents. A cross-sectional design with 26 pairs of adolescents matched on age, race, grade level, and Medicaid status was used. No significant differences were found between the 2 groups. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: does cognitive behavioral therapy improve home behavior?

This study evaluates the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in improving the home behavior of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Twenty-five boys (age 7 to 13) with a diagnosis of ADHD were randomized to a CBT or supportive therapy control group. Outcome measures included parent and teacher ratings of the child on the Behavior Problem Checklist-Attention Problem Subscale (BPC-AP), and the Self-Control Rating Scale (SCRS), parent ratings on the Modified Werry Weiss Activity Scale, and child ratings on the Piers Harris Self-Concept Scale and Matching

The neurobiology of antisocial behavior in adolescence; current knowledge and relevance for youth forensic clinical practice.

Antisocial behavior in adolescents is generally seen as a neurodevelopmental problem; however, in spite of increasing knowledge on the neurobiology of persistent antisocial behavior, conduct disorders, and psychopathic traits, this knowledge is hardly used in clinical practice. The aim of this review is to give an overview of current research on the neurobiology of antisocial behavior in adolescents and to discuss how this knowledge can be translated to youth forensic clinical practice. First, an overview of recent literature on genetics, neuroimaging, neuropsychology, neurophysiology/neuroend

Correlates of maladaptive behavior in individuals with 5p- (cri du chat) syndrome.

This study examined the range, distinctiveness, and correlates of maladaptive behavior in 146 subjects with 5p- (cri du chat) syndrome using the Aberrant Behavior Checklist as a standardized measure. Hyperactivity was the most significant and frequent problem in the sample. Subjects with 5p- syndrome also showed aggression, tantrums, self-injurious behavior, and stereotypies; some of these problems were more pronounced in individuals with lower cognitive-adaptive levels, as well as in those with histories of previous medication trials. Autistic-like features and social withdrawal were more cha

[Kleptomania and compulsive buying].

Kleptomania and compulsive buying are important clinical problems. However there is no established treatment for these problems in Japan yet. In this article, we review the available clinical treatments for kleptomania and compulsive buying in Japan. Kleptomania and compulsive buying can be explained by the conditioning theory. These behaviors are reinforced by positive consequences. In particular, the problem behaviors of kleptomania arise because of arousal and tension and are reinforced by the relaxed feeling that follows. Therefore, kleptomania is treated by systematic desensitization. How…

Influence of sleep disorders on the behavior of individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between sleep disorders and the behavior of subjects with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and control subjects using specific questionnaires. A small percentage (1.8%) of the control subjects had symptoms indicative of sleep-breathing disorders (SBD) and nocturnal sweating. Fifty-nine percent of the subjects with ASD had symptoms indicative of at least one sleep disorder, with SBD the most commonly reported (38%). In the control group, the symptoms of SBD were correlated with social, thought, attentional, aggression, externalizing and beh

Shared predictors of youthful gambling, substance use, and delinquency.

Given that gambling, alcohol misuse, other drug use, and delinquency are correlated, it is hypothesized that these problem behaviors have shared antecedents. Measures from 3 explanatory domains--sociodemographic factors (age, race, and socioeconomic status), individual factors (impulsivity and moral disengagement), and socialization factors (parental monitoring and peer delinquency)--were tested for links to problem behaviors in 2 longitudinal samples of adolescents. Black youth had lower levels of problem behaviors than Whites. Impulsivity was a significant predictor of alcohol misuse for fem…

Behavioral Risk Assessment From Newborn to Preschool: The Value of Older Siblings.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the plausibility of a risk prediction tool in infancy for school-entry emotional and behavioral problems. Familial aggregation has been operationalized previously as maternal psychopathology. The hypothesis was tested that older sibling (OS) psychopathology, as an indicator of familial aggregation, would enable a fair level of risk prediction compared with previous research, when combined with traditional risk factors. METHODS: By using a longitudinal design, data on child and family risk factors were collected on 323 infants (M = 2.00 months),

Sex-specific association between maternal mild anemia and children's behavioral development: a birth cohort study.

There has been limited research on maternal anemia affecting children's behavioral development, with a lack of studies focusing on sex differences in this association. Based on the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort, 2132 mother-child pairs were included. Maternal anemia was evaluated based on the hemoglobin concentration and children's behavioral development was assessed by Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5. Binary logistic regression models indicated that compared with children born of mothers without anemia throughout pregnancy, maternal mild anemia during pregnancy or only anemia in the 3rd tri

Child and adolescent problems predict DSM-IV disorders in adulthood: a 14-year follow-up of a Dutch epidemiological sample.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies exist that examine continuities between child and adult psychopathology in unselected samples. This study prospectively examined the adult outcomes of psychopathology in an epidemiological sample of children and adolescents across a 14-year period. METHOD: In 1983, parent ratings of behavioral and emotional problems were obtained for 1,578 children and adolescents aged 4 through 16 years from the Dutch general population. At follow-up, 14 years later, subjects were reassessed with a standardized DSM-IV interview. RESULTS: High levels of childhood problems predicted an

Suicidal behavior in black South Africans.

In the past suicidal behavior among Black South Africans has been largely underresearched. Earlier studies among the other main ethnic groups in the country showed suicidal behavior in those groups to be a serious problem. This article briefly reviews some of the more recent research on suicidal behavior in Black South Africans. The results indicate an apparent increase in suicidal behavior in this group. Several explanations are offered for the change in suicidal behavior in the reported clinical populations. This includes past difficulties for all South Africans to access health care facilit

Insights into psychosocial problems and associated factors among higher education students in Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

While there has been extensive research on well-known psychosocial problems like depression, anxiety, and stress among higher education students, emerging issues such as emotional problems, antisocial behavior, trauma experiences, and academic difficulties are not as thoroughly studied, particularly in the context of Ethiopian higher education students. These updated psychosocial problems are crucial to explore due to their potentially significant impact on students' academic performance, personal development, and future prospects. Therefore, this study aims to explore the current psychosocial
