A case of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) complicated with hypopituitarism after steroid pulse therapy is reported. A 46-years-old-female with a history of SLE starting in 1975 was admitted to our hospital in February 1991 for lupus nephritis. Steroid pulse therapy, 1000 mg methyl-prednisolone for 3 successive days as one therapy unit, was administered. An 8-year-old ovariohysterectomized Chow Chow was referred because of dermatologic lesions diagnosed as pemphigus foliaceus. Intolerance to orally administered corticosteroids necessitated the use of methylprednisolone pulse therapy. One week after treatment, diabetes mellitus was diagnosed on the basis of blood and urine test results. For 3 years after treatment, the dog has remained a well-regulated diabetic. Complete remission of pemphigus foliaceus is maintained by alternate-day, orally administered prednisone (0.5 mg/kg of body weight).

The reliability of pulse oximetry and transcutaneous oxygen tension (tcPO2) was investigated in hypoxemic neonates and older infants with chronic hypoxemia due to bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Ten patients with Sjögren's disease and 5 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus combined with Sjögren's syndrome received therapy with high doses of 6-methylprednisolone (pulse-therapy) and cyclophosphamide. The authors describe a case of very severe orthostatic hypotension with an invariable pulse arising during the course of considerable motor diarrhea. The diagnosis of primary dysautonomia was made only after eliminating the many organic causes of diarrhea: microbial, toxic, tumoral endocrine including diabetes. Shy and Drager's syndrome was rejected because of the spontaneously regressive course after a period of 4 years, the patient having had no further signs of orthostatic hypotension.
