Estimating mortality in conflict settings: expert perspectives on methods, barriers, and ethical challenges.

BACKGROUND: Estimating mortality in conflict settings is essential for effective humanitarian response yet remains fraught with methodological, political, and ethical challenges. Conventional techniques such as retrospective surveys, prospective surveillance, and multiple-source analysis, often collapse under insecurity, displacement, or censorship. Emerging approaches, including key-informant reporting, small-area estimation (SAE), satellite-based remote sensing, and social-media analytics, offer new possibilities but raise questions about bias, data ownership, and the ethics of digital surve

Dynamic analysis of weak prisoner's dilemma game considering conservative and aggressive cooperative strategy.

The balancing of benefits is a critical pathway for maintaining cooperative relationships among selfish individuals within a group. Relevant research has confirmed that the ultimate outcomes of altruistic actions essentially revert to the level of self-interest. This study posits that individuals exhibit heterogeneous cooperative behaviors in social interactions due to differences in cognitive abilities and personality traits; accordingly, conservative cooperative strategy and aggressive cooperative strategy are introduced. Conservative cooperators are characterized by incurring additional ide

Civic ecosystem responses to compound crises: evidence from Syria.

Compound crises have attracted growing interest from scholars and policymakers in recent years. Little attention, however, has been directed to the social relations that emerge from and respond to such phenomena. This paper closes the gap by investigating the emergence, impact, and limitations of the civic ecosystem that responded to the earthquakes in northwest Syria in 2023, an area already affected by protracted armed conflict, mass displacement, and humanitarian emergency. We combine ideas from complex adaptive systems theory, civic ecosystems scholarship, and the literature on compound cr

The humanitarian border as a violence-producing environment: revisiting aid and anti-migration protests on Lesvos, Greece.

Violent clashes erupted on the Greek island of Lesvos in early 2020, during which aid groups, volunteers, and activists were threatened and attacked. Aid actors and media sources attributed these events to far-right, nationalist, and xenophobic mobilisation; however, this risks ignoring more structural factors and local perspectives on asylum policies and practices. This paper suggests that a more critical approach is necessary to understand why people mobilised against aid on Lesvos, and it explores how this antagonism can be seen as intrinsic to the 'humanitarian border' as it materialised o

Sleep loss leads to the withdrawal of human helping across individuals, groups, and large-scale societies.

Humans help each other. This fundamental feature of homo sapiens has been one of the most powerful forces sculpting the advent of modern civilizations. But what determines whether humans choose to help one another? Across 3 replicating studies, here, we demonstrate that sleep loss represents one previously unrecognized factor dictating whether humans choose to help each other, observed at 3 different scales (within individuals, across individuals, and across societies). First, at an individual level, 1 night of sleep loss triggers the withdrawal of help from one individual to another. Moreover

Experiences of completed and withdrawn unspecified kidney donor candidates in the United Kingdom: An inductive thematic analysis from the BOUnD study.

Objectives This study sheds light on some controversial aspects of unspecified kidney donation (UKD) as well as the ways in which potential donors are screened and prepared for the donation experience and its aftermath. The aim of this study was to qualitatively investigate the experiences of individuals involved in the United Kingdom (UK) UKD scheme, including those who complete the donation, are eventually medically withdrawn, or self-withdraw. Better insight into the different experiences of these groups will provide useful guidance to clinical teams on how to better address the differing p

Altruistic self-regulation in young children.

We investigated whether children would be willing to sustain delaying their own gratification in order to benefit someone else. We used a modified version of the classic "marshmallow task," in which children must sustain delaying gratification in the presence of the immediate reward for an unspecified amount of time in order to receive a larger reward later. Children were assigned to one of three conditions. In the Self condition, children were given a food item and were told that if they waited to eat it, they would receive a second food item. In the Prosocial condition, children also were gi

The question of organ procurement: beyond charity.

Over the past 15 years, the shortage of organs for transplantation has worsened. This has forced clinicians to review alternative approaches to organ procurement. These new approaches, however, may have serious implications both for patients and for society as a whole. Ever since the first cadaver organs were used for transplantation, organ procurement has relied on the altruism and goodwill of donors. It now appears that this 40-year-old policy is proving unsuccessful. In order to increase the availability of suitable organs and allow cadaver organ transplantation to continue, it is time to c…

Understanding parent motivation for participating in the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine trial.

This study aimed to understand parental motivations and concerns regarding enrollment in the Rutgers SARS-CoV-2 (RSC) pediatric vaccine trial during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the 64 parents who completed the survey, the most commonly reported motivation for enrollment was altruism and contributing to science (93.8%), followed by the potential benefit to the child (90.6%). All participating parents had received the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine themselves. Despite the novelty of the COVID-19 vaccine and widespread misinformation, parents in this study demonstrated a high level of support for the pediat…

Sensory impairment reduces money sharing in the Dictator Game regardless of the recipient's sensory status.

Altruism varies as a function of minimal social cues. Sensory impaired individuals elicit more altruistic behaviors, at the same time being more prone to be exploited. We tested whether information about recipient's sensory impairment (blindness or deafness or no impairment) would increase of the amount of money given to the anonymous partner in the Dictator Game (DG). We manipulated information about sensory status of a fictional recipient by indicating their sensory impairment (the same as the participant) or not. Sample of DG players included blind (n = 99) and deaf (n = 74) individuals and…

This s … y revealing that ingroup bias extends to prosocial behaviours involving tension between honesty and altruism, the study clarifies how social and moral considerations and group processes jointly shape the development of children's moral reasoning.

Do pigs have altruistic behaviour based on cognitive empathy?

BACKGROUND: Altruistic behaviour is commonly defined as actions that benefit others at a potential cost to oneself and, in animal research, … ur in relation to the emotional state of others in a manner consistent with cognitive empathy-based altruism. METHODS: A total of 180 piglets were assigned to 90 test units, which were randomly allocated to one of nine treatment groups in a 3 × 3 factorial design. In this design, both the active and passive pigs could receive one of three treatments (rewar …

Implementation outcomes of the WHO psychosocial intervention problem management plus in humanitarian settings: a systematic review.

AIMS: Populations affected by humanitarian crises, including conflict, disasters and displacement, are frequently exposed to elevated psychological distress, while access to mental health services remains scarce. Problem Management Plus (PM+), a low-intensity psychological intervention developed by the World Health Organization, has shown clinical efficacy. However, evidence on its implementation in humanitarian contexts remains limited. This systematic review aimed to synthesize available evidence on the implementation outcomes of PM+ and its delivery formats (individual, group and digital) i

Utilizing rapid diagnostic tests in infectious disease surveillance and response in humanitarian emergencies.

INTRODUCTION: As of 2024, approximately 2 billion people live in conflict-affected regions worldwide, with an estimated 108 million forcibly displaced. Populations affected by humanitarian emergencies (HEs) are at increased risk of outbreaks of epidemic-prone diseases and significant morbidity and mortality. In these settings, access to laboratory diagnostic capabilities may be limited or challenging. Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) represent an essential modality for ensuring timely diagnostic testing to differentiate among infectious diseases and respond with appropriate treatment in HEs. A ge

Painful Call About the Under-Reporting of Children's Pain During Humanitarian Crises.

Humanitarian crises often require urgent medical care to people of concern. Such medical aid includes assessing and treating acute medical needs and ongoing chronic health conditions. Among the people of concern there are children, who are often the most vulnerable population in humanitarian contexts because they often lack the experience, independence, and cognitive and verbal skills to deal with the ordeals they are facing. These limitations might prevent identification and diagnosis of pain. The under-diagnosis and under-treated pain by health care providers might be also due to the perceiv

tDCS effect on prosocial behavior: a meta-analytic review.

Previous studies have shown that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) could potentially promote prosocial behaviors. However, results from randomized controlled trials are inconsistent. The current meta-analysis aimed to assess the effects of anodal and cathodal tDCS using single-session protocols on prosocial behaviors in healthy young adults and explore potential moderators of these effects. The results showed that compared with sham stimulation, anodal (excitatory) stimulation significantly increased (g = 0.27, 95% CI [0.11, 0.43], Z = 3.30, P = 0.001) and cathodal (inhibitory) st
