BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cervical ribs are congenital variants that are known to cause TOS or brachial plexopathy in up to 10% of the affected individuals. We investigated how often cervical ribs are present on cervical spine CT scans to determine the incidence in humans and the percentage of reported cervical ribs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cervical spine CT scans and the reports of 3404 consecutive adult patients were retrospectively reviewed to determine the presence of cervical ribs and whether they had been reported.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical ribs may result in thoracic outlet syndrome. Neurological compromise in children with cervical ribs, however, is rare.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report our experience with cervical ribs in a pediatric population and review this specific literature.

Young patients presenting with acute ischemia of the upper extremity and no cardiac source of embolism are uncommon. Two cases of cervical ribs are reported. Early recognition of this anatomical abnormality is the key to appropriate management.

Anatomical, etiopathogenic, clinical, and paraclinical aspects of vascular complication of cervical rib are discussed based on findings in 15 cases. In 14 patients with wasting of the hand due to a cervical rib and band, motor and sensory conduction studies on the peripheral parts of the median and ulnar nerves were helpful in establishing the correct diagnosis. The authors report ten cases of cervical ribs operated upon in 7 patients. The predominantly neurological symptoms and signs were associated with vascular problems in 3 cases, with intermittent compression of the sub-clavian vessels.
