Floating-Harbor syndrome with chorioretinal colobomas.

BACKGROUND: We present a case of a child with Floating-Harbor Syndrome (FHS) with bilateral chorioretinal coloboma (CC). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of this association. Floating- Harbor syndrome is an extremely rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder with approximately 100 cases reported. It is characterized by a series of atypical features that include short stature with delayed bone age, low birth weight, skeletal anomalies, delayed speech development, and dysmorphic facial characteristics that typically portray a triangular face, deep-set eyes, long eyelash

Transscleral filtration revealing a chorioretinal coloboma.

PURPOSE: We report the case of a 19-year-old patient who presented with an ocular hypotony due to a transscleral filtration through an isolated congenital chorioretinal coloboma in his right eye. OBSERVATIONS: The initial examination showed a decimal best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) decreased to 0.7 and a marked hypotony. A localized infero-nasal chemosis and a conjunctival hyperemia were observed. The fundus examination showed chorioretinal folds and an edematous disc. In the infero-nasal retinal periphery, a chorioretinal coloboma was seen with a full-thickness scleral defect. Ultrasound

Pigmented Paravenous Chorioretinal Atrophy (PPCRA).

As the name suggests, in pigmented paravenous chorioretinal atrophy (PPCRA), patches of chorioretinal atrophy and pigment clumping are distributed along the veins (Figs. 22.1 and 22.2). In most cases, the retinal vessels, macula, and optic discs are normal, and the disease is usually nonprogressive.

Geographic chorioretinal atrophy in pseudoxanthoma elasticum.

PURPOSE: To describe a series of patients with geographic atrophy independent of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in pseudoxanthoma elasticum and to report progression over time. DESIGN: Retrospective observational case series. METHODS: Records of all Vanderbilt Eye Institute patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum and at least 1 set of color fundus photographs were reviewed (41 eyes of 21 patients). Fluorescein angiography, fundus autofluorescence, and optical coherence tomography images were reviewed, when available. In patients with geographic atrophy and at least 1 year of follow-up, at

A case of chorioretinal coloboma in a patient with achondroplasia.

Achondroplasia is a congenital disorder resulting from a specific disturbance in endochondral bone formation. The ophthalmic features reportedly associated with achondroplasia are telecanthus, exotropia, inferior oblique overaction, angle anomalies and cone-rod dystrophy. This is first report of chorioretinal coloboma in achondroplasia. An 8-year-old female was diagnosed with a developmental delay, known as achondroplasia, seven months after birth. Upon her initial visit, visual acuity was 0.3 in both eyes. The patient had telecanthus but normal ocular motility. Findings were normal upon anter

A chorioretinal lesion in a patient with Kimura's disease.

A 47-year-old male patient with Kimura's disease showed a white and slightly elevated choroidal lesion surrounded by serous retinal detachment in his left eye. Serological examination revealed esinophilia. Swelling in his left cheek had been increasing during a period of 20 years, and diagnosis of Kimura's disease had been made earlier by biopsy. Fluorescein angiography suggested disturbance of choroidal circulation and dysfunction of retinal pigment epithelium. After corticosteroid therapy, improvement was seen in the fundus findings, the swelling in the cheek and eosinophilia.

[Möbius syndrome and bilateral chorioretinal coloboma].

A child with palsy of the right facial nerve and bilateral palsy of the VIth, IXth and XIIth cranial nerves, dysfunction of the VIIIth cranial nerve, facial malformations and bilateral equinovarus was diagnosed on the basis of these features as having Moebius syndrome. Ocular studies disclosed congenital cataract and chorioretinal coloboma in both eyes. These ocular abnormalities have not previously been described in Moebius syndrome. This paper discusses whether the coexistence of these two types of anomalies may be due to occurrence of a break in the primitive internal carotid and trigeminal

Chorioretinal lacuna in the amniotic band syndrome.

The malformations in the amniotic band syndrome (ABS) are due to entrapment of fetal parts by fibrous band in the amniotic sac. Limbs are most commonly affected followed by craniofacial defects in one third of patients. Ocular defects include corneal leukomas and lid colobomas often contiguous with facial clefts, strabismus, hypertelorism, and microphthalmos. Unilateral chorioretinal defects or lacunae are rare findings in the ABS. We report a female infant with such a lacunar defect along with central nervous abnormalities, and discuss the differential diagnosis and the embryopathic implicati

Chorioretinal degeneration in infantile malignant osteopetrosis.

We studied two patients who had infantile malignant osteopetrosis, severe visual loss, and diminished electroretinogram amplitudes with visible macular chorioretinal degenerative changes. The findings support the hypothesis that a subgroup of patients with infantile malignant osteopetrosis exists in whom the visual loss is caused by a primary retinal degeneration that may be associated with generalized central nervous system neuronal degeneration.

Hereditary pigmented paravenous chorioretinal atrophy.

Three male siblings, born of nonconsanguineous parents, manifested the characteristic paravenous bone spicule accumulation typically seen in pigmented paravenous chorioretinal atrophy. The wide range of fundus appearances was apparent. The electroretinogram confirmed a localized dystrophy, and an abnormal electro-oculogram in the least affected brother suggested a more widespread abnormality. The onset of the disorder in all three brothers was early in life (possibly congenital), and there was minimal, if any, progression. The mode of inheritance could not be established. Because some mildly a

Prevalence of chorioretinal scars associated with coccidioidomycosis.

A retrospective study was conducted to determine the prevalence and spectrum of chorioretinal involvement among individuals with previously documented systemic coccidioidomycosis. Fifty-four subjects were given a modified ocular examination, and their medical records were abstracted for clinical classification of the disease and its correlation with ocular findings. Five of 54 subjects with documented past infection with Coccidioides immitis had characteristic inactive peripheral chorioretinal scars. No relationship between the presence of scars and the extent of disease was evident; typical s

Therapy of chorioretinitis presumed to be caused by histoplasmosis.

We acknowledge that for most patients with istoplasmic chorioretinitis, the only treatment available is steroids. We agree with Schlaegel that steroids have to be used in adequate doses and for long periods of time. Alternate-day treatment should be instituted as soon as possible. Because it takes the adrenals 10 days to to weeks to be suppressed by sterid therapy, we treat our patients with daily doses for as short a time as possible and then witch over o alernate-day treatment. A short-acting steroid such as prednisone, prednisolone, or methylprednisolone should be used at the outset if long…

Tamoxifen related chorioretinal structural changes.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the vascular structure of the choroid and each retinal layer in patients with breast cancer on tamoxifen therapy and compare them with healthy subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 124 eyes of 62 patients with breast cancer who were on tamoxifen therapy (group 1) and 80 eyes of 40 healthy controls (group 2) were included in this prospective cohort study. The structure of the choroid was evaluated using enhanced depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) and choroidal binarisation. Spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT) was performed to analyse the peripapillary
