Creatine kinase (CK)-MB subunit has been recognized as a useful marker for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, we recently experienced one case of osteopetrosis with moderately high CK-MB and an abnormal (more than 100%) CK-MB/total (T)-CK ratio without evidence of AMI in a medical examination. The study aims to observe whether subjects with a primary affective disease and manic attacks show modifications of serum concentration of creatine-kinase conferring it the role of a biologic marker. Serum concentration of creatine-kinase was determined for 122 men with mono- and bipolar affective disease during the different stages as well as for schizophrenic men with different clinical forms excepting the affective form. A 79-year-old woman developed myocardial infarction associated with acute pulmonary edema. The electrocardiogram recorded QRS complex of QS type in V1 with upper ST extending from V3R to V6R. The polarity of the P wave in bipolar leads was positive, so compatible with dextrorotation complicated by myocardial infarction. The dextrorotation was confirmed with chest roentgenogram and echocardiogram.

A model was developed of the experimental injury of kidney parenchyma with the use of potassium bichromate with six calves. Studied was the activity of ChE, LAP, ALD, APh, GOT, GPT, OKT, and guanase as well as the level of blood sugar, calcium, and inorganic phosphorus. It was found that ALD, ChE, and LAP formed a good enzyme constellation to follow up the functional status of the kidney parenchyma. The results obtained needed further clinical processing.

Cholinesterase activity have been estimated in rectal biopsies of 19 children with Hirschsprung's disease and 80 normal children. A high level of acetyl-cholinesterase is a strong argument for the diagnosis of aganglionosis. We assessed lysosomal exohydrolase activities in homogenates of cultured skin fibroblasts and peripheral blood leucocytes of approximately 550 patients referred from throughout Australasia and suspected of having a mucopolysaccharidosis. Of these, 96 patients from 80 families were diagnosed as being homozygous deficient for a particular lysosomal enzyme activity. A novel radioactive substrate for alpha-L-iduronidase, anhydro[3H]mannitol-iduronide has been prepared. This compound is hydrolysed by alpha-L-iduronidase to yield anhydro[3H]mannitol, which can be separated from the substrate and counted.
