OBJECTIVE: As their differential needs are unknown and to inform service planning, this study (a) examined experiences of caring for adults with acquired brain injury (ABI) and (b) compared these with carers of adults with dementia. DESIGN: Cross-sectional postal survey. ABI carer experiences were compared with those of a previously studied group of dementia carers using equivalent instruments. METHODS: Family carers (n = 222) of adults with ABI: TBI (49%), strokes (26%), brain infections (18%) and other (7%) completed validated questionnaires assessing physical dependency and psychological

A case-comparison analysis of elder abuse and neglect.

This study examines factors which contribute to elderly abuse and neglect by caregivers in a domestic setting. Methodological and conceptual variations and problems in previous studies have led to considerable confusion as to the determinants of this important social problem. A more rigorous research design was used in this study than has been previously employed. Fifty-nine abused elders from a model project site for the study of elderly abuse were compared with forty-nine non-abused clients from a home care program in the same agency. Using a research instrument designed by the authors, data

[My fingers itch, but my hands are bound. An exploratory psychosomatic study of patients with dyshidrosis of the hands (cheiropompholyx)].

The purpose of a pilot study with 20 patients, suffering from dyshidrotic exzema of the hands, was to investigate the relevance of a psychosomatic approach for its etiology and therapy. A set of psychological and allergological tests revealed the following results. - 10 patients suffered from a contact allergy (epicutaneous test), 6 of them were allergic to nickel - the patients were less aggressive and more permissive (Freiburger Personality Inventory; FPI) as compared to a standard population. They reported more somatic complaints (HHM) as healthy subjects. - the results of a semistructured

Is generative artificial intelligence becoming addictive? An exploration among undergraduate students.

This study aimed to examine the multidimensional nature of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) addiction among undergraduate students. For this purpose, firstly, the Generative Artificial Intelligence Addiction Scale (GAI-AS) was developed and administered to 919 undergraduate students. The GAI-AS was designed as a psychometrically valid instrument to assess addictive patterns of GAI use across four dimensions: salience, excessive dependency, mood modification, and functional impairment. The findings provide strong evidence of the scale's validity and reliability. Subsequently, the valida

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Mobile Phone Dependence, and Academic Boredom in Adolescents During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has threatened adolescents' mental health and even elicited their academic problems. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most common negative psychological reactions, and academic boredom is a typical academic problem to the pandemic. PTSD might be related to academic boredom, but the underlying mechanism of this potential relation in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic remains unclear. Aims: Under the framework of the job demands-resources model and the model of compensatory internet use, this study aims to examine the m

Health-Related Quality of Life and Psychological Adjustment of Children and Adolescents with Pacemakers and Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators: A Systematic Review.

The absence of cardiac symptoms, the improved exercise tolerance and the increased life expectancy are the advantages of a successful cardiac device therapy. Nevertheless, the fact of a lifelong device dependency, the inherent possibility of device malfunction and the progression of the underlying heart disease may impact the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the psychological adjustment of these individuals. To date, an overview of findings on these topics is lacking. The objective of this study was to evaluate and summarize the current evidence on generic and disease-specific HRQoL

ResoMamba-LLM: multimodal physiological signal stress detection for wearable devices via Mamba and: LLM. reprogramming.

Objective. The accuracy of psychological stress detection hinges upon the precision with which models capture complex and variable physiological responses. Current research primarily employs deep learning techniques to model multimodal physiological responses, aiming to enhance detection performance by leveraging complementary features across modalities. However, existing deep learning approaches face challenges in modeling long-range dependencies and exhibit suboptimal robustness in cross-modal fusion.Approach.To address this, this paper proposes ResoMamba-LLM, a multimodal stress detection fr

Sleep EEG and motor activity as indicators in affective states.

This report reviews a number of studies which support our current classification schema for affective disorders. This classification differentiates between an anxious-hyperactive type and an anergic-hypoactive type which are then further subdivided into primary and secondary affective disorders. While the motor and activity measurements are for the most part limited to patients suffering from primary affective disease, current studies under way indicate that secondary affective disorders may also have characteristic biologic changes. EEG sleep and motor activity parameters provide useful point

Comorbidity structure of psychological disorders in the online e-PASS data as predictors of psychosocial adjustment measures: psychological distress, adequate social support, self-confidence, quality of life, and suicidal ideation.

BACKGROUND: A relative newcomer to the field of psychology, e-mental health has been gaining momentum and has been given considerable research attention. Although several aspects of e-mental health have been studied, 1 aspect has yet to receive attention: the structure of comorbidity of psychological disorders and their relationships with measures of psychosocial adjustment including suicidal ideation in online samples. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study attempted to identify the structure of comorbidity of 21 psychological disorders assessed by an automated online electronic psychological ass

Can We Better Understand, Diagnose, and Treat Ketamine-Induced Uropathy, and Can It Be Reversed? ICI-RS 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Ketamine, a versatile anesthetic, has seen increased recreational use, leading to significant health issues, including ketamine-induced uropathy (KIU). KIU manifests with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and can involve the upper urinary tract. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of KIU, addressing its pathophysiology, diagnostic strategies, and treatment options; and to define/identify future research priorities. METHODS: During the 2024 meeting of the International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society (ICI-RS) in Bristol, a dedicated Proposal (P) co

Prioritization of personally relevant stimuli in male abstinent heroin users.

The prioritization of the processing of highly relevant personal stimuli pervades various cognitive domains and is vital to our survival and normal functioning. However, the extent to which this process is altered by drug addiction remains to be elucidated. The present study examined the self-prioritization effect in abstinent heroin users (AHUs) using the perceptual matching task, which controls for the confounding effect of familiarity, and further modified it to revalidate the drug-prioritization effect (DPE). Eighty male AHUs and forty healthy control (HC) participants were recruited for t

Trauma and Chinese heroin users.

This qualitative study explores the traumas of Chinese heroin users. The results showed that the Chinese experience traumas during (childhood, later in life but prior to heroin-use onset, and throughout their heroin-use career. Themes related to the traumas include the historical economic transition, the value of family orientation, an emphasis on scholarly pursuits, the shame orientation, and a scarcity of resources conducive to recovery. This article provides a framework to understand the traumas experienced by Chinese people and offers insights on how macrofactors may impact the trauma and

Chronic regurgitation: a clinical approach to the under-recognised rumination syndrome in adults.

A woman in her 20s presented to the emergency department with severe hypokalaemia, resulting in a need for high-dependency unit care. She had a 8-month history of effortless regurgitation of food and significant weight loss. She denied any nausea or retching. A CT angiogram, OGD, enteroscopy, barium meal, MRI abdomen and flexible sigmoidoscopy were normal. The diagnosis of rumination syndrome was suspected from the history and witnessed regurgitation; the diagnosis was confirmed by high resolution oesophageal impedance manometry. The patient was managed with total parenteral nutrition (TPN), b
