OBJECTIVE: The X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is the most common type of ectodermal dysplasia. The clinical identification of possible heterozygous females can be difficult because of the varying degrees of clinical signs caused by X-chromosome inactivation. This study is the first to elaborate on anomalies of tooth formation found in a group of hemizygous males and heterozygous females with known ED1 mutations. These tooth anomalies may be used as dental biomarkers for heterozygous females, enabling an earlier diagnosis, and therefore, better treatment and genetic counsellin

An unusual case of ectodermal dysplasia is presented. Besides the main symptoms of ectodermal dysplasia, congenitally missing teeth and the impaction of all the other existing permanent teeth make this case interesting.

Described is the first report of familial SUKA, occurring in two of three sisters with ectodermal dysplasia, a rare, hereditary disorder involving ectodermally derived organ systems. Although rare, SUKA should be considered when assessing rapidly growing nailbed lesions. Differentiation from subungual squamous cell carcinoma is essential. Tumor excision and curettage and close postoperative follow-up are recommended, with conservative amputation reserved for tumor recurrences. If the diagnosis of SUKA is confirmed in a female, an association with ectodermal dysplasia should be sought.

Ectodermal dysplasias are characterized by abnormalities in two or more ectodermal structures, including hair, sweat glands, nails, etc. and are a rare group of congenital disorders. It is characterized by the triad of three conditions, namely hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis, and hypodontia. The phenotypic expression of ectodermal dysplasia may be variable, often raising problems in clinical assessments and care, particularly in the paediatric age group, where early manifestations can be subtle or nonspecific. While most cases reveal a clear inheritance pattern, sporadic presentations in the absen

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a heterogeneous group of hereditary diseases of the skin and its appendages, which are characterized by impaired development and/or homeostasis of two or more ectoderm derivatives, including: hair, teeth, nails, sweat glands and their modifications (mammary glands, for instance). The overall prevalence of ectodermal dysplasia remains precisely unknown not only in Russia, but also in the world, nor is known the contribution of individual genes to its structure. This complicates the DNA diagnosis establishment of this disease due to the lack of an accurate diagnostic

Prosthodontic treatment for patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is difficult to manage because of the loss of occlusal vertical dimension, abnormal alveolar ridge and anodontia A 20-year-old case with HED was reported. The patient was treated with occlusal reconstruction by a maxillary fixed prosthesis and mandibular telescopic prosthesis. At one-year's follow-up, dentures were well used and occlusal function of the patient returned to normal.

AIM: To investigate the association between gender and type of cleft with hypodontia and to verify if the presence of the cleft interferes with hypodontia of one or more type of teeth in patients with ectodermal dysplasia attending the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies (HRCA), University of São Paulo (USP).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Panoramic radiographs of 54 patients of both genders (29 males, 25 females), from the files of the oral radiology sector of HRCA/USP, presenting with ectodermal dysplasia and cleft lip and/or palate were evaluated by radiographic observation of hy

Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with immunodeficiency (EDA-ID) is characterized according to its various manifestations, which include ectodermal dysplasia, vascular anomalies, osteopetrosis, and diverse immunological abnormalities such as susceptibility to pathogens, impaired antibody responses to polysaccharides, hypogammaglobulinemia, hyper-IgM syndrome, impaired natural killer cell cytotoxicity, and autoimmune diseases. Two genes responsible for EDA-ID have been identified: nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) essential modulator (NEMO) for X-linked EDA-ID (XL-EDA-ID) and IκBα for autosomal-dominant

The ectodermal dysplasias are a complex, heritable group of syndromes that affect derivatives of ectoderm. The dermatologist plays an important role in ectodermal dysplasias as the visible defects of skin, hair, and nails are often recognized first. Our objective was to examine how quality of life relates to the degree of skin involvement in ectodermal dysplasias. Subjects (n = 42) with ectodermal dysplasias were surveyed at national and regional conferences hosted by National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias on July 26 to 28, 2007 and November 17, 2007. Severity of hypohidrosis, alopecia,

Ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary disorder that occurs as a consequence of disturbances in the ectoderm of the developing embryo. The triad of nail dystrophy, alopecia or hypotrichosis and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis is usually accompanied by a lack of sweat glands and a partial or complete absence of primary and/or permanent dentition. Two case reports illustrating the prosthetic rehabilitation of 2 young boys with anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia associated with severe anodontia are presented. Since the oral rehabilitation of these cases is often difficult; particularly in pediatric patien

OVERVIEW: Dental treatment modalities for ectodermal dysplasia (ED) vary markedly depending on the clinical manifestations, but to date there have been no studies exploring the potential economic impact of ED. On the basis of anecdotal and clinical reports, the authors postulate that costs of dental treatment for this condition can have a substantial financial impact on patients and their families.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the authors' pilot study was to develop an economic model for various treatment modalities for ED with severe hypodontia.
METHODS: The authors first used a comprehensive

The ectodermal dysplasia constitutes a group of hereditary disorders whose clinical manifestations can be defects in ectodermal structures. The hypohidrotic and anihidrotic are commonly types of ectodermal dysplasia. The main characteristics are dental anomalies, hypotrichosis and hypohidrosis. The oral rehabilitation of this patients is important for better social living, self esteem and oral function. This paper had as objective to relate and discuss a case of anihidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, describing the positive influence of an alternative rehabilitation treatment.

BACKGROUND: The number of failing organs systems in ICU patients with haematological malignancy is associated with outcome. The objective of this study was to assess short and long-term survival in these patients with special reference to multiple organ failure reflected by the SOFA (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment) score.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of haematological patients admitted to the 10-bed intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary level academic teaching hospital from 1994 to 1998. Of 31 admitted patients with the diagnosis of haematological malignancy, the charts of 30 we

The ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) are a large and complex nosological group of diseases, first described by Thurnam in 1848. In the last 10 years more than 170 different pathological clinical conditions have been recognised and defined as EDs, all sharing in common anomalies of the hair, teeth, nails, and sweat glands. Many are associated with anomalies in other organs and systems and, in some conditions, with mental retardation. The anomalies affecting the epidermis and epidermal appendages are extremely variable and clinical overlap is present among the majority of EDs. Most EDs are defined by
