Interactions of psychological factors and family history in relation to coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Psychological factors including hostility, depression and stress have been associated with severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). However, few studies have examined interactions between such factors and typical CAD risk factors. Investigating interactive effects simulates their co-occurrence and complex effects in illness, as well as helping to identify groups of patients at greatest risk of morbidity. This study examined the interactive effects of hostility, hopelessness and daily hassles with family history of CAD in relation to CAD severity. DESIGN: Correlation design. MET

Colorado family physicians' knowledge of hereditary breast cancer and related practice.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to describe Colorado family physicians' (FPs') knowledge of hereditary breast cancer and related practice behaviors. METHOD: A survey was mailed to 400 practicing FPs randomly sampled from the board-certified members of the Colorado Academy of Family physicians. RESULTS: Overall, knowledge of hereditary breast cancer was inadequate. Less than half of the respondents knew that BRCA mutations account for 0-10% of all breast cancers; 38% knew the lifetime risk for non-carriers, and 17% responded that a known carrier would have a lifetime breast cancer

Event-related potentials and consonant differentiation in newborns with familial risk for dyslexia.

We measured event-related potentials (ERPs) to synthetic consonant-vowel syllables (/ba/, /da/, /ga/) from 26 newborns with familial risk for dyslexia and 23 control infants participating in the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Dyslexia. The syllables were presented with equal probability and with interstimulus intervals ranging from 3,010 to 7,285 ms. Analyses of averaged ERPs from the latencies identified on the basis of principal component analysis (PCA) revealed significant group differences in stop-consonant processing in several latency ranges. At the latencies of 50-170 ms and 540-630 ms

Relation of family responsibilities and gender to the productivity and career satisfaction of medical faculty.

BACKGROUND: Studies have found that female faculty publish less, have slower career progress, and generally have a more difficult time in academic careers than male faculty. The relation of family (dependent) responsibilities to gender and academic productivity is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To describe dependent responsibilities by gender and to identify their relation to the aspirations, goals, rate of progress, academic productivity, and career satisfaction of male and female medical school faculty. DESIGN: 177-item survey questionnaire. SETTING: 24 randomly selected medical schools in the conti

HIV-related disease: family physicians' multiple opportunities for preventive intervention.

BACKGROUND: The spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the increasing number of persons with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are major health problems. HIV risk factors are well documented, and HIV disease is recognized as a chronic illness with a predictable course. METHODS: Since September 1987 the East Central AIDS Education and Training Center for Health Professionals has served Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Activities include (1) educating and training primary health care providers on prevention and treatment of AIDS, (2) training selected individuals t

The Roscommon Family Study. III. Schizophrenia-related personality disorders in relatives.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to clarify the familial relationship between five putative schizophrenia-related personality disorders (schizotypal [SPD], paranoid, schizoid, avoidant, and borderline) and schizophrenia, other nonaffective psychoses, and affective illness. DESIGN: A case-controlled epidemiologic family study using DSM-III-R criteria. PARTICIPANTS: Five hundred thirty-four probands selected from a psychiatric case register or electoral register, of whom 415 were personally interviewed, and 2043 living and traceable relatives, of whom 1753 were personally interviewed. RESULTS: Compared

[Various familial and demographic indicators in relation to the severity of mental retardation in the probands].

A comparative analysis was made of some familial and demographic characteristics in 3 groups of mentally retarded patients with varying intensity of deficiency. The hypothesis of different etiology of mild and severe mental retardation was confirmed. Appreciable differences were found in the microsocial characteristics in the intermediate group of patients with marked debility. In certain characteristics, this group was similar to the gravest patients whereas in some others, to the group with mild grades of intellectual underdevelopment. This fact can be accounted for by the heterogeneity of t

Familial trends in palatal canines, anomalous lateral incisors, and related phenomena.

Our previous studies have established a strong link between small, peg-shaped and missing lateral incisors, and palatally-displaced maxillary canine teeth. Since these anomalies of lateral incisor development are known to be under strong genetic control, the hypothesis was that first degree relatives of patients with palatal canines would themselves show a raised prevalence of the anomalies. The present study also investigated a possible link between palatal canines and lateness in development of the dentition, and a relative absence of crowding, both of which are phenomena that have been ment

[Fechtner syndrome: report of two families and review of the literature on the related disorders].

Two families who had been reported as having May-Hegglin anomaly were diagnosed as having Fechtner syndrome based on complication of renal disease, deafness and characteristic leukocyte inclusions. By Wright-Giemsa staining, the inclusions of neutrophils were smaller and stained less clearly than those seen in May-Hegglin anomaly. Ultrastructurally, the inclusions consisted of organelle-poor cytoplasm, containing small particles, which were probably ribosomes. Some inclusions contained only a few filaments or small remnants of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER). The latter resembled the finding

A case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease related to familial retinitis pigmentosa patients.

Similarities between serological alterations and retinal degeneration occurring in natural and experimental CJD and in some forms of human retinal degeneration have recently been reported. In the present paper a family from an areal focal accumulation of CJD in Central Slovakia with 1 histopathologically verified case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and 2 case of retinitis pigmentosa is described. Neuropathological and epidemiological data obtained in investigated patients are discussed from the point of view of a possible relationship between the slow virus infections caused by unconventional ag

Ventricular septal defects in three familially-related female Saanen goats.

Ventricular septal defects were diagnosed in 3 familially-related Saanen goats, a 4-year-old doe and 2 female kids aged 18 weeks, by clinical examination, electrocardiography, phonocardiography and thoracic radiography. Findings were contrasted with those from 3 clinically normal goats. Cardiac catheterisation was attempted on the 2 affected kids before euthanasia. Blood pressure tracings and selective contrast cardioangiography successfully demonstrated the defect in one case, but the other died shortly after anaesthetic induction. The adult goat, suspected paternal grand-dam of the affected

Hyperostosis generalisata with striations of the bones, a further report in two related families.

Hyperostosis generalisata with striations of the bones falls within the large group of sclerotic bone dysplasias and is characterised by a marked widening of cortical bone, sclerosis of the base of the skull, and dense striations in the cancellous bone. All the bones of the skeleton, with the possible exception of the vault of the skull, may be involved to some extent. A milder form exists in which thickening of cotrical bone occurs, mainly in the long bones of the limbs and striations are absent. The disorder has never been described in the female. Apart from a slight elevation of the serum a

Family studies of relation between Perthes disease and congenital dislocation of the hip.

A family study of Perthes disease and congenital dislocation of the hip was made in the Faroe Islands, with a population of 40 000. The examination included 1123 sibs and first cousins of 43 probands with Perthes disease, 1942 sibs and first cousins of 59 dislocation probands, and 5205 sibs and first cousins of 172 unaffected matched controls. Both conditions occur with exceptionally high incidences in this population. Thus the incidence of Perthes disease was found to be 41: 10 000 males and 7: 10 000 females, of congenital dislocation of the hip 7: 10 000 males and 59: 10 000 females. These

Familial paroxysmal dystonic choreoathetosis and its differentiation from related syndromes.

Four generations of a family are described in which 7 of 8 affected members suffered from prolonged dystonic seizures; the eighth member's attacks were those of paroxysmal choreoathetosis. The attacks lasted up to 4 hours, were precipitated by alcohol, emotion, or fatigue, and responded poorly to phenytoin and barbiturates but were controlled by clonazepam. Autopsy on an affected child who died a "crib death" at the age of 2 years disclosed no major abnormality of the brain. This family appears to have the same condition as that described by Mount and Reback in 1940, Forssman in 1961, and Rich

Family caregivers of rare disease: A survey on health-related quality of life in family caregivers for Gaucher disease patients in China.

BACKGROUND: Rare diseases affect the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients and their family caregivers (FCs). However, limited evidence is available on the HRQoL of FCs of patients with Gaucher disease (GD). This study aimed to assess HRQoL and related factors among FCs of patients with GD in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 49 FCs recruited by convenience sampling. Participants completed the Medical Outcome Study Short Form-36 (SF-36), Zung's Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale, the Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived
