A Case Report of Fetus Papyraceus in Singleton Pregnancy.

Background and Clinical Significance: Fetus papyraceus is a term describing fetal findings associated with miscarriage, wherein the fetus is not expelled, remains in the uterine cavity, and is compressed by neighboring structures, with an inability for fetal resorption due to advanced pregnancy. Case Presentation: Herein, we present the case of a 33-year-old primigravida with two previous presentations to our institution due to emotional stress without evidence of physical abuse, the last one being at the 14th week of pregnancy. The latest presentation was with complaints of intermittent lower

Prophylactic Effects of Bee Venom Phospholipase A2 in Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Pregnancy Loss.

Spontaneous abortion represents a common form of embryonic loss caused by early pregnancy failure. In the present study, we investigated the prophylactic effects of bee venom phospholipase A2 (bvPLA2), a regulatory T cell (Treg) inducer, on a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced abortion mouse model. Fetal loss, including viable implants, the fetal resorption rate, and the fetal weight, were measured after LPS and bvPLA2 treatment. The levels of serum and tissue inflammatory cytokines were determined. To investigate the involvement of the Treg population in bvPLA2-mediated protection against fetal

Growth assessment of diabetic rat fetuses under the influence of insulin and melatonin: a morphologic study.

Hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress makes an important contribution to the etiology of diabetic teratogenicity namely fetal growth and congenital dysmorphogenesis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the protective roles of melatonin and insulin against diabetic's embryolethality and teratogenicity. Diabetes was induced to virgin Sprague Dawley albino rats by a single peritoneal injection of alloxan. Thirty pregnant rats were divided equally into 5 groups: 1) Control 2) Diabetic 3) Diabetic insulin 4) Diabetic melatonin 5) Diabetic melatonin-insulin. Insulin and melatonin were administered

Role of maternal dietary antioxidant supplementation in murine placental and fetal limb development.

Methylnitrosourea (MNU) is a multisystem teratogen that damages proliferating cells through macromolecule alkylation and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Murine dams exposed to MNU midgestation produce offspring with distal limb malformations, an outcome reduced by maternal immune stimulation. Immunostimulatory effects of antioxidant therapy may in part explain this improved birth outcome. The present study hypothesizes that placental, rather than fetal, damage from excessive ROS may contribute to MNU-induced embryopathy. Fetal limbs and placentas were examined in immunotolerant CD

Benomyl-induced craniocerebral anomalies in fetuses of adequately nourished and protein-deprived rats.

Benomyl, a benzimidazole fungicide, produced craniocerebral and systemic malformations in fetal rats when administered by gavage in doses of 31.2, 62.5, and 125 mg/kg of maternal body weight on days 7-21 of gestation. Malformations increased in incidence and severity with increasing benomyl dosage and nearly doubled when coupled with a protein-deficient diet. Protein deficiency alone produced only decreased fetal weight. High benomyl doses produced higher percentages of fetal resorptions and late fetal deaths, and these percentages also increased with protein deficiency. A benomyl dose of 62.5

[Studies on the pharmacological bases of fetal toxicity of drugs (VII). Enhancement effect of bacterial pyrogen on the fetal toxicity of salicylic acid].

We reported previously that the acute and fetal toxicities of aspirin (ASA) were enhanced by bacterial endotoxin (LPS). In order to clarify the mechanism of the enhancement by LPS, the effects of LPS on the toxicities of salicylic acid (SA), the main metabolite of ASA, were investigated in rats. The following results were obtained: 1) The acute toxicity of SA was significantly potentiated by LPS in male rats. The LD50 of SA with LPS was about one third of that of SA alone. 2) The increase of maternal body weight was inhibited significantly after administration of SA (383 mg/kg, p.o.) with LPS

Effects of acute doses of ethanol administered at pre-implantation stages on fetal development in the mouse.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of maternal administration of acute doses of alcohol at preimplantation stages of pregnancy on the fetus and fetal membranes. Single doses of 0.02 ml and 0.03 ml/g body wt. of 25% v/v of absolute alcohol in saline were administered to groups of MF1 mice on one of days 1-6 of gestation. Controls were either pair-fed and pair-watered or saline-treated. Fetuses and placentae were collected on day 15. Resorption and fetal death were increased in most of the alcohol treatment groups. The reduction in fetal body weight was significant

Exencephaly and axial skeletal dysmorphogenesis induced by maternal exposure to cadmium in the mouse.

To investigate the axial skeletal dysmorphogenesis associated with exencephaly and facial abnormalities, two doses of cadmium chloride (4 mg/kg and 6 mg/kg) were administered subcutaneously to MF1 mice on day 7 of gestation (sperm-positive day = day 0). Fetuses were collected on day 18. Gross examination revealed a very high incidence of cranioschisis aperta with exencephaly, maxillary and mandibular hypoplasia, low-set microtia, edema, and growth retardation of fetuses in both treatment groups. Alizarin red S-stained and cleared skeletal preparations of these embryos revealed hypoplasia of th

Peripheral plasma levels of oestradiol-17 beta and progesterone in the bitch during the oestrous cycle, in normal pregnancy and after dexamethasone treatment.

Plasma oestradiol-17 beta concentrations in Labradors increased during pro-oestrus to an average maximal concentration of of 79-7 +/- 10-9 (S.D.) pg/ml, and then fell rapidly. In 6/7 bitches the peak occurred within 1 day of oestrus. No consistent changes in plasma oestradiol levels were observed during pregnancy and at parturition and the values were similar to those in late anoestrus. Plasma progesterone levels did not increase markedly during pro-oestrus. At oestrus, progesterone values rose and maximal concentrations, which varied from about 20 to about 55 ng/ml, were reached within a few

The teratogenic effects in rabbits of doxycycline, dissolved in polyvinylpyrrolidone, injected into the yolk sac.

A technique was developed for injecting agents into the yolk sac of rabbits to study their teratogenic effects. On the 9th day of gestation the rabbits were laparotomized during ether-oxygen narcosis. The test substance was injected into the yolk sacs in one horn of the uterus, and as control the corresponding solvent was injected into the other horn. On the 28th day of gestation the rabbits were killed, resorptions counted, and fetuses examined for malformations. Three series of studies were made: physiological saline; polyvinylpyrrolidone; and doxycycline dissolved in polyvinylpyrrolidone (D

Effects of continuous low-level exposure to radiofrequency radiation on intrauterine development in rats.

To assess the effect of low-level radiofrequency radiation on pregnant rats, gravid dams were exposed continuously to 0.1 mW cm-2 at 27.12 MHz during different periods of pregnancy. Biological assays consisted of determining pre- and post-implantation losses and the effects on maternal body weight increase. Fetal parameters monitored included sex, mean viable fetal weight on Day 20 of gestation, external, skeletal and visceral fetal malformations, anomalies and variations. Dosimetric evaluations were made in terms of average specific absorption rate (SAR) and basal metabolic rate (BMR). Findin

Dimethoxyethyl phthalate: embryopathy, teratogenicity, fetal metabolism and the role of zinc in the rat.

A single intraperitoneal injection (0.6 ml/kg) of dimethoxyethyl phthalate (DMEP) was given to groups of Wistar strain rats on day 10, 11, 12, 13 or 14 of gestation. Control rats received 0.6 ml/kg of physiological saline intraperitoneally. In phthalate-treated rats, embryopathy was manifested by a high incidence (12-79%) of fetal deaths and fetal resorptions. Fetotoxic effects were expressed by a significant reduction in fetal weights. Hydrocephalus interna, a congenital malformation of the brain, was caused by DMEP. Characterizing the effects of in utero valproic acid exposure on murine fetoplacental development.

INTRODUCTION: Valproic acid (VPA) is an effective anti-epileptic drug clinically used to treat seizures, bipolar disorders and neuropathic pain in women of reproductive age. Current approval of VPA for psychiatric conditions and migraine has increased the number of VPA exposed pregnancies. VPA crosses the placental barrier and induces birth defects in about 10% of exposed pregnancies. In addition, VPA exposure results in neurodevelopmental disorders in children without any overt birth defects. The current study was designed to investigate the effects of in utero VPA exposure on fetoplacental g

Embryotoxicity of orally administered chromium in mice: exposure during the period of organogenesis.

Administration of chromium (VI)(250, 500 and 750 ppm as potassium dichromate) via drinking water during organogenesis (days 6-14 of gestation) in mice revealed embryo- and fetotoxic effects. Reduced fetal weight, retarded fetal development, number of fetuses (live and dead) per mother and high incidences of dead fetuses and resorptions in treated mothers in the highest dosed group were evident. No significant gross structural abnormalities were observed in any of the fetuses of chromium (VI)-treated mothers. Significant incidences of reduced ossification were found in the highest dosed group.

Embryotoxic and teratogenic effects of aluminum nitrate in rats upon oral administration.

In order to determine the embryotoxic and teratogenic potential of aluminum, pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were treated by gavage with a daily dose of 180, 360, or 720 mg/kg of aluminum nitrate from the sixth through to the fourteenth day of gestation. Fetal examinations were performed on day 20. The number of corpora lutea, total implants, and resorptions as well as the number of live and dead fetuses in the treated animals were not significantly different from the control group. Therefore, embryolethality of aluminum cannot be induced (as a measure of percent dead and resorbed fetuses). Howev

Fetal and neonatal demise in zoonotic diseases: pathology and pathogenesis.

Zoonotic infections constitute a major cause of reproductive failure and perinatal mortality in humans and animals. Among the most relevant etiological agents are Listeria monocytogenes, Brucella spp., and Toxoplasma gondii, which, despite distinct biological properties, share the capacity to breach placental defenses, establish intracellular niches, and impair fetal development. This review aims to synthesize current knowledge on the pathological and pathogenic mechanisms underlying fetal and neonatal death associated with these pathogens, with a focus on placental infection, vertical transmi

Disturbances of mouse pregnancy after injection of Ascaris homogenate during early organogenesis.

Administration of the Ascaris tegumental homogenate (0.6-1.2 g of Ascaris proteins/kg/day) at a early stage of organogenesis (5-9 days of pregnancy) had a harmful effect upon the developing mouse fetuses. It has been found that injection of the homogenate did not delay or prevent implantation, but causes a high rate of intrauterine deaths. The Ascaris homogenate significantly decreased the number of live fetuses per litter, increased the frequency of litter resorption, produced a delay in bone formation and induced pathological changes of fetal organs and tissues. The congenital malformations

Pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin. III. Hemispaying and the reversal of the antifertility faculty of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin.

A single injection of 10 IU of pregnant mare's serum gonadotropin (PMSG) on day 5 of pregancy caused wastage of the fetoplacental unit by day 16 of pregnancy. Semispaying, which seems to subtract approximately 50% of the ovarian steroid contribution, at 24, 48, and 72 hours following the PMSG schedule prevented the antifertility faculty of the hormone preparation. However, hemicastration at 96 hours following the gonadotropin regimen was found to be ineffective, and 100% of the test animals showed complete termination of pregnancy. Experimental data collectively tempt us to propose that an est
