Retention of buoyant plastic in a well-mixed estuary due to tides, river discharge and winds.

Estuaries can act as plastic retention hotspots, but the hydrodynamic controls on retention are not well understood. This study investigates the retention of river-sourced buoyant plastics in a well-mixed estuary, the Waitematā Estuary, using validated numerical simulations of floats with different tides, winds, and freshwater discharge. The proportion of floats grounded on the shore in all seven simulations is higher than 60 % and over 90 % in five simulations after ten days. <20 % of the floats leave the estuarine mouth in any of the simulations. An increase of two orders of magnitude in fre

Decreased levels and ecological risks of disinfection by-product chloroform in a field-scale artificial groundwater recharge project by colloid supplement.

To bolster freshwater supply, artificial groundwater recharge with recycled water has increasingly attracted research attentions and interests. However, artificial groundwater recharge has potential risks to groundwater quality, as recharge water disinfection is frequently used for pathogen inactivation and causes the concerns of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Colloid supplement is a good approach solving this problem, but its roles in mitigating DBPs remains unclear. In this study, we collected 20 groundwater and soil samples from a field-scale groundwater recharge project, and explored the

Hydrologic flushing rates drive nitrogen cycling and plant invasion in a freshwater coastal wetland model.

Coastal wetlands intercept significant amounts of nitrogen (N) from watersheds, especially when surrounding land cover is dominated by agriculture and urban development. Through plant uptake, soil immobilization, and denitrification, wetlands can remove excess N from flow-through water sources and mitigate eutrophication of connected aquatic ecosystems. Excess N can also change plant community composition in wetlands, including communities threatened by invasive species. Understanding how variable hydrology and N loading impact wetland N removal and community composition can help attain desire

Effect of UVR on lake water and macrophyte leachates in shallow Andean-Patagonian lakes: bacterial response to changes in optical features.

The aim of this study was to identify bacterial responses in two shallow lakes from Patagonia to UV-irradiated dissolved organic matter (DOM) coming from different sources. We carried out laboratory experiments in which natural lake water and Potamogeton linguatus leachates were irradiated (UVA-340 fluorescent tubes Q-Panel) or kept in darkness. Natural bacterial assemblages were then incubated in four treatments: natural lake water, irradiated lake water, macrophyte leachate and irradiated macrophyte leachate. We estimated bacterial abundance, composition and activity, and changes in the opti

In situ measurements of metal complex exchange kinetics in freshwater.

Trace metals were measured in situ in a freshwater river draining a peat catchment (DOC = 15 mg L(-1)) using diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) devices with a range of gel layer thicknesses (0.16-2.0 mm). The reciprocal of the accumulated mass of each metal varied linearly with the thickness of the diffusive layer. These plots allowed calculation of the thickness of an apparent diffusive boundary layer (ADBL). A constant value was obtained from the plots of Cd, Pb, and Zn. The observed increase in the ADBL for the other metals (Mn<Co<Ni<Cu<AI<Fe) was consistent with increasing kinetic lim

Thermochemical conversion of microbial mats: A case study on Cr(VI) removal from freshwater.

In response to increasing anthropogenic pollution and metal accumulation in aquatic environments, bioremediation has gained great importance. Microbial consortia are emerging as a promising solution due to their diverse pollutant metabolizing pathways. This study evaluates the role of biotic and abiotic components in microbial mats for Cr(VI) removal from freshwater. For this purpose, microbial mats were modified by high-temperature treatments using an autoclave and a muffle furnace, and modified and unmodified mats, both chemically characterized by SEM-EDS, ATR-FTIR, XRD, and XPS, were used i

Improving the Measurement of Iron(III) Bioavailability in Freshwater Samples: Methods and Performance.

The toxicity of iron(III) in fresh waters has been detected at concentrations above the iron solubility limit, indicating a contribution of colloidal and particulate forms of iron(III) to the toxicity response. Current water quality guideline values for iron in fresh water are based on analytical determinations of filterable or total iron. Filtration, however, can underestimate bioavailable iron by retaining some of the colloidal fraction, and total determinations overestimate bioavailable iron measurements by recovering fractions of low bioavailability from suspended solids (e.g., iron oxides

Filling the gaps - New molecular and morphological data of gregarine apicomplexans colonising freshwater invertebrates.

Gregarines (Apicomplexa: Gregarinasina) are widespread protist symbionts of invertebrates, occupying roles across the symbiotic spectrum from mutualism to parasitism. Despite their ecological importance, they remain far less studied than other apicomplexans, leaving many aspects of their diversity, host specificity, and evolutionary history unresolved. This is particularly true for freshwater taxa for which only a handful of small subunit (SSU) rDNA sequences from species colonising freshwater hosts are available in public databases. In this study, we screened ten freshwater invertebrates (Art

Insights into the critical processes of methane biogeochemical cycling in inland freshwater ecosystems: a systematic review.

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas with a 100-year global warming potential approximately 27.9 times that of carbon dioxide, contributing to approximately 19% of historical global warming. Inland freshwater ecosystems are significant natural sources of CH4 emissions and constitute the greatest uncertainty in the global methane budget. This review systematically synthesizes recent advances in understanding the biogeochemical cycling processes and environmental drivers of CH4 in inland freshwater systems. Special emphasis is placed on the "methane paradox", which is the phenomenon of CH4 s

Molecular detection of Paragonimus mexicanus in freshwater crabs: new records in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Paragonimiasis is a zoonotic disease caused by lung flukes of the genus Paragonimus, which use freshwater snails and crustaceans as intermediate hosts and mammals as definitive hosts. Despite its public health importance, few studies have documented the distribution of this parasite in tropical regions of Mexico. In April 2024, a total of 180 freshwater crabs of the genus Pseudothelphusa were collected from five localities in Oaxaca State, Mexico. Metacercariae were observed in 47.2% of the crabs examined, with the highest mean intensity (18.46 cysts per crab) recorded in San Pedro Molinos loc

Benzodiazepine Delorazepam Induces Locomotory Hyperactivity and Alterations in Pedal Mucus Texture in the Freshwater Gastropod Planorbarius corneus.

Benzodiazepines, psychotropic drugs, are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment due to over-consumption and inefficient removal by sewage treatment plants. Bioaccumulation with consequent behavioral and physiological effects has been reported in many aquatic species. However, the responses are species-specific and still poorly understood. To improve the knowledge, we exposed the freshwater snail Planorbarius corneus to 1, 5, or 10 µg/L of delorazepam, the most widely consumed benzodiazepine in Italy. Conventional behavioral tests were used to assess the effects on locomotor and feeding behavior

Adsorption and Removal Kinetics of 2,4-Dinitroanisole and Nitrotriazolone in Contrasting Freshwater Sediments: Batch Study.

Environmental release of 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) and 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) is of great concern due to high migration potential in the environment. In the present study we evaluated the adsorption and microbially-mediated removal kinetics of dissolved DNAN and NTO in contrasting freshwater sediments with different total organic carbon (TOC) content. River sand (low TOC), pond silt (high TOC), clay-rich lake sediment (low TOC), wetland silt (high TOC), carbonate sand (low TOC), and iron-rich clay (low TOC) were evaluated. Separate abiotic and biotic bench-top sediment slurry incuba

Quantitative high-throughput approach to chalkophore screening in freshwaters.

There is an increasing need to study the effects of trace metal micronutrients on microorganisms in natural waters. For Fe, small Fe-binding ligands called siderophores, which are secreted from cells and bind Fe with high affinity, have been demonstrated to modulate bioavailability of this critical nutrient. Relatively little is known about secretion of strong Cu-binding ligands (chalkophores) that may help organisms navigate the divide between Cu nutrition and toxicity. A barrier to environmental chalkophore research is a lack of literature on chalkophore analysis. Here we report the developm

Pigments and plastic in limnetic ecosystems: A qualitative and quantitative study on microparticles of different size classes.

Recently, macroplastic (>5 mm) and especially microplastic (<5 mm) particles have been reported as emerging contaminants in marine and limnetic ecosystems. Their coloration is gained by the addition of pigments to the polymer blend which is the major component of the respective product. However, color is also a feature of paint and coatings whereby the pigment is the major component. Once abraded from a surface, paint particles may enter the environment via similar pathways as microplastic particles. So far no detailed studies of microplastic particles (pigmented and non-pigmented) as well as
