A principal component analysis (PCA) based assessment of the gait performance.

The gait assessment is instrumental for evaluating the efficiency of rehabilitation of persons with a motor impairment of the lower extremities. The protocol for quantifying the gait performance needs to be simple and easy to implement; therefore, a wearable system and user-friendly computer program are preferable. We used the Gait Master (instrumented insoles) with the industrial quality ground reaction forces (GRF) sensors and 6D inertial measurement units (IMU). WiFi transmitted 10 signals from the GRF sensors and 12 signals from the accelerometers and gyroscopes to the host computer. The c

Analysis of Patterns of Gait Deterioration in Patients with Lumbar Spinal Stenosis.

OBJECTIVE: Quantitative gait analysis has been established as a valuable tool for functional assessment and evaluation of intervention efficacy in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). We aimed to bolster the limited evidence on the specific aspects of gait that are altered in LSS. METHODS: Fifteen patients with LSS and 15 healthy subjects performed a 30-m-long walk. Gait was assessed by video recording. Four spatiotemporal parameters were compared between groups: cadence, gait velocity, step length, and step duration. RESULTS: Compared with healthy subjects, gait of patients with LSS demonstrated s…

A Deep Learning-Based Approach for Gait Analysis in Huntington Disease.

Huntington Disease (HD) is a genetic neurodegenerative disease which leads to involuntary movements and impaired balance. These changes have been quantified using footstep pressure sensor mats such as Protokinetics' Zeno Walkway. Drawing from distances between recorded footsteps, patients' disease severity have been measured in terms of high level gait characteristics such as gait width and stride length. However, little attention has been paid to the pressure data collected during formation of individual footsteps. This work investigates the potential of classifying patient disease severity b

Selection of clinical features for pattern recognition applied to gait analysis.

This paper deals with the opportunity of extracting useful information from medical data retrieved directly from a stereophotogrammetric system applied to gait analysis. A feature selection method to exhaustively evaluate all the possible combinations of the gait parameters is presented, in order to find the best subset able to classify among diseased and healthy subjects. This procedure will be used for estimating the performance of widely used classification algorithms, whose performance has been ascertained in many real-world problems with respect to well-known classification benchmarks, bo…

Kinematic analysis of subtalar eversion during gait in women with fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the subtalar eversion range of motion during walking in women with fibromyalgia. METHOD: Twenty women diagnosed with fibromyalgia were directed to walk barefoot at comfortable and self-paced speed on a 7m walkway. Subtalar eversion range of motion was measured using the difference between the maximum and minimum values of subtalar eversion in stance phase. A range of motion between 4°-6° was considered as reference values for subtalar eversion during gait. Descriptive statistics were performed. RESULTS: In both right and left lower limb analysis of subtalar eversion ran

Gait analysis on split-belt force treadmills: validation of an instrument.

OBJECTIVE: Gait analysis (GA) is usually performed during overground walking, with ground reactions being recorded through force platforms embedded in the floor. Body kinematics and surface electromyography (EMG) are also recorded. GA on treadmills resting on force sensors (GAFT) is rather uncommon and has been criticized on various grounds (less reliability of force records; biomechanical differences in walking kinematics and dynamics). On the other hand, the treadmill allows very fast recording of data from many successive strides, at known and constant average speeds. The goals of this stud…

Gait analysis and muscle strength in children with surgically treated clubfeet.

Twenty-three children who had unilateral surgery for idiopathic clubfeet underwent gait analysis and isokinetic muscle-strength testing at an average of 10 years after surgical release. Ankle sagittal-plane kinematics were disturbed in 20 clubfeet. Fifteen children had an internal foot-progression angle. Genu valgum and knee hyperextension were common. Plantarflexion power was decreased by 23% on the side of surgery (p = 0.00005). Quadriceps weakness (defined as a decrease in strength >10% of the nonoperated-on limb's strength) was seen in nine of 22 operated-on limbs and hamstring weakness in…

Gait analysis and dynamic foot pressure in the assessment of treated clubfoot.

Gait analysis and dynamic foot pressure were used in a follow-up study of 42 children with idiopathic clubfeet. Mean age at follow-up was 9 years (range 4-15 years). Twenty-four of the 62 clubfeet were treated conservatively and 38 had at least one operative intervention. Gait analysis showed that the vertical and posterior ground forces were significantly lower from the clubfoot compared with the normal foot. Dynamic foot pressure demonstrated a significant shift of the center of pressure to the lateral side in the affected compared with the normal side. In bilateral clubfeet, a relationship …

Preoperative gait analysis has a substantial effect on orthopedic decision making in children with cerebral palsy: comparison between clinical evaluation and gait analysis in 60 patients.

BACKGROUND: There is still some debate regarding the role of 3-dimensional gait analysis in routine preoperative evaluation of children with cerebral palsy. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate to what extent introduction of 3-D gait analysis changes preoperative surgical planning. METHOD: Before gait analysis, 60 ambulatory children aged 10 (4-18) years with spastic cerebral palsy had a specific surgical plan outlined, based on clinical examination by orthopedic surgeons. After gait analysis, the proposed surgical procedures were reviewed to determine the frequency with which th…

A wearable monitoring system for running gait analysis by diffusion transformer.

Conventional wearable monitoring devices often suffer from insufficient data accuracy and low posture recognition rates, making them inadequate for the demands of professional sports health monitoring. To address these issues, this study proposes a wearable monitoring system for running gait analysis based on the Diffusion Transformer (DiT). The system aims to achieve high-precision running posture recognition and real-time motion monitoring through multi-sensor data fusion and advanced deep learning architecture. First, a wearable system was developed using a nine-axis Micro-Electro-Mechanica…

A Review of Gait Analysis Using Gyroscopes and Inertial Measurement Units.

Wearable sensors are used in gait analysis to obtain spatiotemporal parameters, with gait events serving as critical markers for foot and lower limb movement. Summarizing detection methods is essential, as accurately identifying gait events and phases are key to deriving precise spatiotemporal parameters through wearable technology. However, a clear understanding of how these sensors, particularly angular velocity and acceleration signals within inertial measurement units, individually or collectively, contribute to the detection of gait events and gait phases is lacking. This review aims to s…

A new human spine model for use in cinematographic gait analysis.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of two spine models: the broken curve model and a new four tangent circles model. The modification concerns the adaptation of data acquisition to kinematic methods used in, e.g., gait and running analysis. METHOD: Plastic, movable spine model of human with flexible intervertebral disks (manufactured by Erler Zimmer GE3014) was used as the study material. Markers with a diameter of 5 mm were glued to each spinous process (from C7 to L5). The recording was performed with a 6-camera Vicon system. Two spine models were created: a broken c

Inertial Sensor Technologies-Their Role in Equine Gait Analysis, a Review.

Objective gait analysis provides valuable information about the locomotion characteristics of sound and lame horses. Due to their high accuracy and sensitivity, inertial measurement units (IMUs) have gained popularity over objective measurement techniques such as force plates and optical motion capture (OMC) systems. IMUs are wearable sensors that measure acceleration forces and angular velocities, providing the possibility of a non-invasive and continuous monitoring of horse gait during walk, trot, or canter during field conditions. The present narrative review aimed to describe the inertial …

A Multi-Modal Analysis of the Freezing of Gait Phenomenon in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Freezing of Gait (FOG) is one of the most disabling motor complications of Parkinson's disease, and consists of an episodic inability to move forward, despite the intention to walk. FOG increases the risk of falls and reduces the quality of life of patients and their caregivers. The phenomenon is difficult to appreciate during outpatients visits; hence, its automatic recognition is of great clinical importance. Many types of sensors and different locations on the body have been proposed. However, the advantages of a multi-sensor configuration with respect to a single-sensor one are
