Serum samples obtained from 50 bacteriologically positive cases of Salmonella Typhi infection as well as 50 healthy individuals were subjected to conventional and modified Widal tests simultaneously. A 4-fold difference in the titres was noticed in 50 sera of the test group and no change in the titres of the control group. The early rising 'O' antibodies which are of IgM in nature and formed due to recent infection are inactivated by 2-mercaptoethanol while it has no effect on IgG antibodies which are formed due to flagellar 'H' antigens or due to anamnestic response or by nonspecific reasons.

Proteins that were closely associated with murein in intact cells of Escherichia coli were studied by treating [3H]leucine and [3H]palmitate-labeled cells with the chemical crosslinking reagent dithiobis(succinimidylpropionate). The homologous skin sensitizing activity of serum from tick-naive cattle (Bos taurus) and from cattle resistant to the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus was tested by attempting to induce passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) in tick-naive calves. Cadmium sulphide nanoparticles were grown using a wet chemical method, by dissolving the reactants, cadmium chloride and sodium sulphide in water, in the presence of mercaptoethanol (ME), which was used as a capping agent. Manganese chloride was used to dope the nanoparticles. It was found that the particle size varied with different concentrations of ME. Homocytotropic antibody has been shown to occur in pigs experimentally infected with lungworms, Metastrongylus spp. This antibody is heat labile, inactivated by 2-mercaptoethanol and persists at passively sensitized skin sites for up to 14 days.
