Testing Cross-Sectional and Prospective Mediators of Internalized Heterosexism on Heavy Drinking, Alcohol Problems, and Psychological Distress Among Heavy Drinking Men Who Have Sex With Men.

OBJECTIVE: Minority stress theory is one of the primary theories used to understand substance use among lesbian, gay, and bisexual populations. METHOD: Using secondary data analysis and the PROCESS procedure, relationships between internalized heterosexism, the mediators (DTC, loneliness, and GCP), and outcomes (heavy drinking, alcohol problems, and psychol

Socio-economic inequities in mental health problems and wellbeing among women working in the apparel and floriculture sectors: testing the mediating role of psychological capital, social support and tangible assets.

BACKGROUND: It is still unknown whether the mechanisms proposed by the Reserve Capacity Model (RCM) explaining socio-economic health and wellbeing inequities in high income countries can be applied to low-income countries. This study investigates whether different reserve capacities (intra-, inter-personal, and tangible) can explain the association between relative socio-economic position (SEP) and wellbeing outcome measures among Ethiopian women working in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). METHOD: Using a cross-sectional design, we collected quantitative survey data among 2,515 women working

Mother And late Preterm Lactation Study (MAPLeS): a randomised controlled trial testing the use of a breastfeeding meditation by mothers of late preterm infants on maternal psychological state, breast milk composition and volume, and infant behaviour and growth.

BACKGROUND: Late preterm infants suffer from more complications and are less likely to be breastfed compared to term infants and their mothers experience higher levels of stress than mothers with term infants. The physiological or hormonal responses that influence milk ejection, milk production, and/or maternal behaviour are possible mechanisms by which maternal distress could negatively influence breastfeeding success. Maternal mood might also affect infant behaviour (feeding, sleeping, and crying) through changes in milk volume and composition, and consequently breastfeeding success and infa

[Reversible cerebral ischemia: psychological reactions to the disease].

Two different psychological tests were applied to 40 patients affected by reversible cerebral ischemic attacks in order to evaluate the presence of depression or neurotic symptoms. 40 normal volunteers were used as a control group. While no statistical differences emerged in the mean values of the control tests, significant psychological impairments were observed in the group of patients. Such psychological disturbances were marked in the series with minor neurological deficits. Similar reactions were noted in subjects still employed and in patients submitted to carotid surgery. The authors em…

Evaluation of the psychological status of ventilatory-supported patients with ALS/MND.

Many medical professionals feel that a choice of long-term ventilatory support leads to a life of hopeless desperation. We compared the sociodemographic, physical and psychological status of 18 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neurone disease (ALS/MND) patients on ventilatory support for 1 to 120 months with that of 126 nonventilatory-supported ALS/MND patients. Patients filled out a comprehensive data form and completed ten psychological tests. A composite psychological status score was computed, representing a continuum from psychological distress to psychological well-being. Mann-Whitney…

[Psychological characteristics of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma].

Psychological disorders of different severity are observed in 89.7% patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. They can be detected both clinically and by psychological tests. The psychological status and personality characteristics of patients with glaucoma were evaluated by SMOL method and Cattel's 16 Personality Factors. Signs of psychological disadaptation are more pronounced in patients with the initial and well-developed stages of the disease and in those not treated surgically. The duration of the disease does not affect the psychological characteristics of patients with primary open-an…

Psychological assessment of catatonic schizophrenia.

Probably due to the rarity of the disorder and the general inability of catatonic patients to cooperate with standardized assessment, no data exist documenting the psychological features associated with catatonic schizophrenia that may appear on psychological tests. This study utilized standard assessment techniques to examine clinical hypotheses regarding the psychogenic correlates of catatonic conditions from the performance of one man on psychological tests. In accordance with previous theory, test findings indicated frequent constriction, rigidity, and negativism in conjunction with compul…
