OBJECTIVES: To evaluate prospectively the impact of a distal urethral polypropylene sling on sexual function using a validated questionnaire. Suburethral slings are currently the most common anti-incontinence surgery performed. Although the use of polypropylene is safe and effective, concern exists that the presence of the material in the vagina may adversely affect sexual function.
METHODS: A total of 29 patients agreed to participate in this prospective study. The patients were evaluated with the Female Sexual Function Index, a validated, 19-item questionnaire that assesses six domains of s…

It is difficult to determine what types of procedures should be attempted in patients who have recurrent prolapse. We present a case of recurrent lateral enterocele and rectocele after the patient had undergone multiple surgeries for pelvic organ prolapse (POP), including a vaginal hysterectomy, bladder-neck suspension, anterior colporrhaphy, site-specific rectocele repair, apical mesh implant, iliococcygeus vault suspension, and transobturator suburethral sling procedure. With recurrence, the patient underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic sacral colpopexy, tension-free vaginal tape transobtura

BACKGROUND: Synthetic meshes have been used extensively to augment surgical management of pelvic organ prolapses. Posterior intravaginal sling (IVS) is a technique used for correcting vaginal vault/apical prolapse, posterior vaginal prolapse or rectocele. There are limited data on long-term safety of this procedure. In a subanalysis of the IVS tapes from the SUSPEND trial performed secondary to the large number of patients with complications of suburethral sling erosions after IVS, it was noted that the sling erosion tended to have a delayed presentation secondary to poor incorporation of the

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the duration of catheter use differed between subjects using clean intermittent self-catheterization and those using continuous Foley catheterization after transvaginal sling surgery.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of postoperative bladder drainage in 167 consecutive women undergoing transvaginal suburethral sling placement for stress urinary incontinence. The primary outcome measure was the duration of catheter use. Normal voiding was defined as a voided volume equal to twice the residual volume and a residual volume of less than 100 mL for 24

Ultrasound imaging is rapidly replacing radiological methods in the investigation of pelvic floor disorders. Transrectal, transvaginal/intro … ed our understanding of the effects of incontinence and prolapse surgery, such as the new synthetic suburethral slings. In recent years, imaging methods have contributed significantly to our understanding of the traumatic effects of childbirth on the pelvic floor. Finally, the assessment of pelvic floor biomechanics may have implications for clinical obstetrics and …

We have previously reported preliminary (9 month) results using the tissue fixation system (TFS) in patients with stress incontinence. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of the TFS in patients with genuine stress incontinence at 3 years. The TFS uses two small plastic anchors to fix a (adjustable) midurethral polypropylene mesh sling into the pelvic muscles and tissues below the retropubic space. Thirty-six patients with stress incontinence, mean age 55 (35-87), mean weight 76 kg, (33-117 kg), mean 0.8 previous operations for stress incontinence, underwent a TFS midurethral s

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Stress urinary incontinence affects about 34% of all adult women. The mid-urethral sling (MUS), considered the gold-standard treatment, has widespread use but also potential complications. This study aims to demonstrate a new surgical technique that releases urethral obstruction caused by MUS with urinary continence maintenance.
METHODS: This video presents a 43-year-old patient with acute urinary retention after a suburethral sling procedure treated with a double opposite tape incision through a "U"-shaped inverted incision at the anterior vaginal wall.
