A study on the prevalence of RLS in OSA and the consequences of co-occurrence.

BACKGROUND: Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is common among patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) but the prognostic importance of this is not studied. We have called OSA and RLS coexistence as ComOSAR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective observational study was done on patients referred for polysomnography (PSG) with the aims to evaluate 1) the prevalence of RLS in OSA and comparing it with RLS in non-OSA, 2) the prevalence of insomnia, psychiatric, metabolic and cognitive disorders in ComOSAR versus OSA alone, 3) chronic obstructive airway disease (COAD) in ComOSAR versus OSA alone. OSA

Maintenance of wakefulness test: how does it predict accident risk in patients with sleep disorders?

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the objective level of alertness measured by the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) is associated with the occurrence of self-reported sleepiness-related traffic near misses and accidents related to sleepiness in patients with sleep disorders. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted over a three-year period in four French sleep centers during a 4∗40 min MWT in patients driving more than 5000 Km/year. Relationship between mean sleep latency on the MWT (MWT latency) and age, sex, driving, sleepiness-related near misses and accidents reported durin

Relationship of serum ferritin level and tic severity in children with Tourette syndrome.

PURPOSE: Tics can be considered hyperkinetic movements akin to restless leg syndrome (RLS). Drawing the analogy of iron deficiency as an etiology of RLS, it is conceivable that iron deficiency may underlie or worsen tics in Tourette syndrome (TS). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between serum ferritin levels and tic severity, as well as consequent impact on life, in children with TS. METHODS: Children <18 years, diagnosed with TS during 2009-2015, were reviewed. Only those with serum ferritin testing were included. The following data were collected: tic severity, im

Comprehensively understanding fatigue in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) experience a high persistence, prevalence, and severity of fatigue. There is currently only limited information regarding factors that contribute to fatigue in patients with MPNs. METHODS: A 70-item, Internet-based survey regarding fatigue was developed by MPN investigators and patients/advocates and hosted by the Mayo Clinic Survey Research Center. RESULTS: Fatigue was found to be prevalent and severe among international survey respondents (1788 respondents). Higher body mass index (P<.001), current use of alcohol (P<.001), and c

Overview of sleep & sleep disorders.

Sleep is defined on the basis of behavioural and physiological criteria dividing it into two states: non rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep which is subdivided into three stages (N1, N2, N3); and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep characterized by rapid eye movements, muscle atonia and desynchronized EEG. Circadian rhythm of sleep-wakefulness is controlled by the master clock located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei of the hypothalamus. The neuroanatomical substrates of the NREM sleep are located principally in the ventrolateral preoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus and those of REM sleep are located in

Evaluation of chronic insomnia. An American Academy of Sleep Medicine review.

Insomnia is a condition which affects millions of individuals, giving rise to emotional distress, daytime fatigue, and loss of productivity. Despite its prevalence, it has received scant clinical attention. An adequate evaluation of persistent insomnia requires detailed historical information as well as medical, psychological and psychiatric assessment. Use of a classification system for sleep disorders and familiarity with major diagnostic groups will facilitate the clinician's evaluation and treatment. Thorough assessment also requires attention to the unique aspects of presentation and spec

Sleep-related periodic leg movements associated with spinal cord lesions.

We describe three patients who developed progressive paraparesis and sleep-related periodic leg movements (SRPLM) associated with thoracic spinal cord lesions; one patient had a schwannoma and two had intramedullary lesions. The patients showed periodic repetitive involuntary movements involving one or both lower limbs. The involuntary movements consisted of a single rapid dorsiflexion of the great toe or ankle, two to four repetitive dorsiflexions of the toes and ankle, and a mixture of repetitive jerks and prolonged spasms causing flexion of the hip and knee and dorsiflexion of the ankle and

The endogenous opioid system in neurological disorders of the basal ganglia.

The endogenous opioid peptides have for some time been implicated in the regulation of motor behavior in animals. Recently, however, there is increased evidence to suggest a role for these peptides in the control of human motor functions as well as in the pathophysiology of abnormal movement disorders. Degeneration of opioid peptide-containing neurons in the basal ganglia has been demonstrated in Parkinson's disease and Huntington's chorea, but the clinical significance of these findings is largely unknown. On the other hand, there is evidence that excessive opioid activity may be important in

Cross-sectional analysis of the quality of hemodialysis short videos on TikTok.

The global prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) ranges from 9.1% to 13.4%, with China having the largest number of CKD and advanced CKD patients in Asia. Most patients choose hemodialysis (HD) due to its high safety. Still, long-term treatment may cause complications such as restless legs syndrome and skin itching, which seriously affect patients' quality of life. Recently, the Internet has gradually become the main medical and health information source. As one of the largest short-video platforms in China, TikTok is an important source for spreading health information. However, the reli

Vitamin D supplementation in later life: a systematic review of efficacy and safety in movement disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Nutrition plays a pivotal role in the multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitating middle to old-aged patients with neurological diseases including movement disorders (MDs). Despite the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in many patients with MDs, data supporting supplementation's effectiveness and safety is sparse and conflicting, therefore, our explicit objective was to provide an all-encompassing review of the subject. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and other scientific databases was conducted up to November 1 2023. The searches included RCTs in all langua

Neurological Insights into Sleep Disorders in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common multidimensional neurological disorder characterized by motor and non-motor features and is more prevalent in the elderly. Sleep disorders and cognitive disturbances are also significant characteristics of PD. Sleep is an important physiological process for normal human cognition and physical functioning. Sleep deprivation negatively impacts human physical, mental, and behavioral functions. Sleep disturbances include problems falling asleep, disturbances occurring during sleep, abnormal movements during sleep, insufficient sleep, and excessive sleep. The mo
