Ankylosis of temporomandibular joint is a condition in which partial or complete immobilization of mandible occurs because of fusion between mandibular condyle and skull base. This condition can be treated orthodontically, surgically, or therapeutically or by prosthodontic rehabilitation. A 10-year-old female patient presented to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Gazi University Faculty of Dentistry, with limited mouth opening. She got injury in the face when she was 5 years old. Extraoral and intraoral examination findings were facial asymmetry on the left side, micrognathic m

Condyle fractures represent 20% to 30% of all mandibular fractures and are thus among the most common facial fractures. The fracture pattern can vary greatly and may occur anywhere along the line from the sigmoid notch to the mandibular angle. The main problems are access, difficulty in repositioning the extremely slender fragments, and fixation of the condyle.Eighty-seven patients were diagnosed with condylar neck or condylar base fractures from January 2007 to December 2009 in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery of Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital. In this study, we included 3

Microvascular free tissue transfer (FTT) is an increasingly used method of reconstruction for traumatic defects of the head and neck. We describe the immediate management, FTT reconstruction techniques, and outcomes of 6 individuals who sustained maxillofacial gunshot trauma and were treated at a single tertiary-care level I trauma center. All 6 patients were white men with a mean age of 33 years. The mandible, nose, and orbital contents were the most frequently affected critical structures. All patients initially underwent primary wound debridement and tracheostomy, with concurrent maxilloman

Gingival recession is displacement of the soft tissue margin apically leading to root surface exposure. Tooth malpositions, high muscle attachment, frenal pull have been associated with gingival tissue recession. Occlusal trauma is defined as injury resulting in tissue changes within the attachment apparatus as a result of occlusal forces. Trauma from occlusion may cause a shift in tooth position and the direction of the movement depends on the occlusal force. We present the clinical and radiological findings and the limitation of periodontal treatment of a severe gingival recession in a case

PURPOSE: This prospective study was designed to assess the association of clear paranasal sinuses (no free fluid) as shown by facial computed tomography (CT) with the absence of fractures involving the paranasal sinus walls.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All facial CT scans performed during a 12-month period to rule out maxillofacial injury in blunt trauma patients were reviewed. The scans were made using 5-mm slice thickness and 4-mm table incrementation. They were assessed for the presence or absence of free paranasal sinus fluid (hemorrhage) and the presence and location of facial fractures.

The global aging population has intensified the incidence of degenerative bone diseases and the therapeutic demand for traumatic bone injuries, thereby making bone regenerative medicine a research focus. There is a close connection and interaction between the skeletal system and the nervous system, and innervation plays an indispensable regulatory role in the process of bone regeneration: the sympathetic nervous system exerts a negative regulatory effect during bone regeneration, while the parasympathetic nervous system plays a positive regulatory role in this process. Nerve fibers within bone

Bone fracture healing requires coordinated interactions between immune cells and skeletal tissues, with flat bones exhibiting unique biomechanical and physiologic characteristics as compared with long bones. The mandible, the lower jawbone that supports the oral cavity, has distinct features due to its proximity to the oral mucosa, which is enriched in immune cells and microbiota, and its exposure to masticatory forces, making it a clinically relevant model for studying immune-skeletal interactions during fracture repair. Moreover, mandibular fractures are common maxillofacial injuries, posing…

To develop an understanding of the expected functional outcomes after facial trauma, a retrospective cohort study of patients with complex facial fractures was conducted. A cohort of adults aged 18 to 55 years who were admitted to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center between July of 1986 and July of 1994 for treatment of a Le Fort midface fracture (resulting from blunt force) was retrospectively identified. Outcomes of interest included measures of general health status and psychosocial well being in addition to self-reported somatic symptoms. General health status was ascertained using the

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic injury of the inferior alveolar or lingual nerve or both is a known complication of oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures. Injury to these two branches of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve may result in altered sensation associated with the ipsilateral lower lip or tongue or both and may include anaesthesia, paraesthesia, dysaesthesia, hyperalgesia, allodynia, hypoaesthesia and hyperaesthesia. Injury to the lingual nerve may also affect taste perception on the affected side of the tongue. The vast majority (approximately 90%) of these injuries are tempo

Despite recent advances in automobile safety, facial trauma remains a common event. Cranio-facial trauma, which usually occurs within a context of multiple trauma, can, in some patients, lead to serious life-threatening vascular complications. Such injury usually involves the carotid system (hemorrhage, aneurysm, dissection). Management of these vascular injuries must be given the same priority as other multiple trauma injuries. We present few typical cases illustrating carotid-cavernous or vertebro-vertebral fistulae, false aneurysms, arterial dissections or oro-facial bleeding. Bleeding is g
