Rapid Cycle Implementation and Retrospective Evaluation of a SARS-CoV-2 Checklist in Labor and Delivery.

BACKGROUND: Preparedness efforts for a COVID-19 outbreak required redesign and implementation of a perioperative workflow for the management of obstetric patients. In this report we describe factors which influenced rapid cycle implementation of a novel comprehensive checklist for the perioperative care of the COVID-19 parturient. METHODS: Within our labour and delivery unit, implementation of a novel checklist for the COVID-19 parturient requiring perioperative care was accomplished through rapid cycling, debriefing and on-site walkthroughs. Post-implementation, consistent use of the checkli

Assessment of medical reserve corps volunteers' emergency response willingness using a threat- and efficacy-based model.

The goal of this study was to investigate the willingness of Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) volunteers to participate in public health emergency-related activities by assessing their attitudes and beliefs. MRC volunteers responded to an online survey organized around the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM). Respondents reported agreement with attitude/belief statements representing perceived threat, perceived efficacy, and personal/organizational preparedness in 4 scenarios: a weather-related disaster, a pandemic influenza emergency, a radiological ("dirty bomb") emergency, and an inhalational

Relationship between the inclusion/exclusion criteria and sample size in randomized controlled trials for SARS-CoV-2 entry inhibitors.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic that has been ongoing since 2019 is still ongoing and how to control it is one of the international issues to be addressed. Antiviral drugs that reduce the viral load in terms of reducing the risk of secondary infection are important. For the general control of emerging infectious diseases, establishing an efficient method to evaluate candidate therapeutic agents will lead to a rapid response. We evaluated clinical trial designs for viral entry inhibitors that have the potential to be effective pre-exposure prophylactic drugs in addition to redu

The impact of the United States' distancing from the UN and withholding WHO funding on maternal and child health and nutrition in the Latin America & Caribbean region.

This commentary examines the serious implications of the United States’ (US) decision to withdraw funding from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN) system for maternal and child health and nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The region has made significant progress in reducing maternal and infant mortality through coordinated efforts led by WHO, PAHO, and other UN agencies, as an example, infant mortality decrease in LAC by 67% between 1990 and 2015. However, many countries, particularly low-income countries and small island nations, remain highly dep

Invisible threat, tangible harm: Radiation anxiety and birth outcomes after Fukushima.

Identifying causal effects of prenatal psychological stress on birth outcomes is challenging because stressful events typically bundle psychological stress with material disruptions. The 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident provides a unique setting to overcome this challenge: while physical radiation exposure was geographically limited and well-documented, fear of radiation spread nationwide. We exploit this geographic separation to examine how maternal anxiety independently affects fetal development. Using universal Japanese birth records linked to census data, combined with a novel Google Trends

Enhancing information for action: A strategic tool for strengthening public health emergency management systems.

BACKGROUND: This paper addresses the importance of timely and robust information systems that underpin emergency response decision-making, as evidenced during the COVID-19 pandemic in the WHO European Region. Recognizing the relevance of these systems, we propose the strengthening of national emergency response information management systems (ERIMS) within the broader digital health information system (HIS) framework. We aim to develop and present an innovative assessment tool designed to evaluate and assist in the strengthening of ERIMS, contributing to a more resilient and effective emergenc

Maternal and perinatal health research during emerging and ongoing epidemic threats: a landscape analysis and expert consultation.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnant women and their offspring are often at increased direct and indirect risks of adverse outcomes during epidemics and pandemics. A coordinated research response is paramount to ensure that this group is offered at least the same level of disease prevention, diagnosis, and care as the general population. We conducted a landscape analysis and held expert consultations to identify research efforts relevant to pregnant women affected by disease outbreaks, highlight gaps and challenges, and propose solutions to addressing them in a coordinated manner. METHODS: Literature searc

[COVID-19 measures and human rights guaranteed by the Japanese Constitution].

Since March 2020, the Act on Special Measures for Pandemic Influenza and New Infectious Diseases Preparedness and Response has been a significant statute in dealing with COVID-19 in Japan. The Act mandates requests, instructions and orders for business suspension and shortened business hours, as well as stay-at-home requests. These measures limit freedom of movement and establishment, guaranteed rights under the Japanese Constitution. This article poses the following research question: "Does the Japanese Constitution allow measures against COVID-19 such as requests, instructions and orders for

Anti-Influenza Protective Efficacy of a H6 Virus-Like Particle in Chickens.

H6 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) have a worldwide distribution, and they pose a potential concern for public health. In Taiwan, H6 AIVs have circulated in domestic chickens for more than 40 years, and certain strains have crossed the species barrier to infect mammals. With the goal of containing the disease, there is a pressing need to develop a safe and effective vaccine for pandemic preparedness. In this study, we prepared a virus-like particle (VLP) that consisted of the hemagglutinin (HA) and matrix protein 1 (M1) derived from a H6 AIV as a vaccine antigen, and we examined the immunogenic…
