BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder (BD) share DSM-IV criteria in adults and cause problems in decision-making. Nevertheless, no previous report has assessed a decision-making task that includes the examination of the neural correlates of reward and gambling in adults with ADHD and those with BD.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used the Iowa gambling task (IGT), a task of rational decision-making under risk (RDMUR) and a rapid-decision gambling task (RDGT) which elicits behavioral measures as well as event-related potentials (ERPs: fERN and P3)

BACKGROUND: Lead (Pb) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are neurotoxic contaminants that have been related to impairment in response inhibition.
OBJECTIVES: In this study we examined the neurophysiological correlates of the response inhibition deficits associated with these exposures, using event-related potentials (ERPs) in a sample of school-age Inuit children from Arctic Québec exposed through their traditional diet.
METHODS: In a prospective longitudinal study, we assessed 196 children (mean age, 11.3 years) on a visual go/no-go response inhibition paradigm. Pb, PCB, and mercury (Hg)

Event-based prospective memory (PM) requires remembering the delayed execution of an intended action in response to a pre-specified PM cue while being actively engaged in an ongoing task in which the cue is embedded. To date, experimental paradigms vary as to whether or not they require participants immediately to stop working on the ongoing task whenever they encounter a PM event (cue) and directly switch to the prospective action (task-switch approach). Alternatively, several other paradigms used in the literature encourage participants to continue working on the ongoing task item after the

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the irritative epileptic zone in patients with cavernomas by means of magnetoencephalography (MEG).
METHOD: Among 82 patients operated for epilepsy, whose presurgical evaluation had included MEG, histological assessment of the tissue removed had confirmed cavernomas in eight. These eight patients had epilepsy since 18.6 (SD 12.7) years on average. The monitoring lasted about 2.1 (SD 1.3) hours and a median 20.9 (SD 14.3) spikes per hour were recorded. Spontaneous brain activity was recorded by means of a 74 channel dual unit MEG system (Magnes

The present chapter of the new third series IFCN Handbook focuses on how peripheral neurophysiology may develop in the next five years or more. While some are clinical relevant, others are more experimental. The first three sections detail the possible futures of EMG, motor unit number estimation, surface EMG and movement. In a section on magnetoneurography, electrically induced signals are visualized in sensory nerves whilst that on magnetomyography shows how motor units may be identified in greater detail than with surface EMG. Electrical impedance methods for assessing nerve and muscle are

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Closed reduction is an important adjunct in the surgical management of traumatic cervical facet dislocations, particularly jumped and locked facets. By restoring normal spinal alignment, successful closed reduction allows the surgeon to proceed with surgical stabilization via an anterior-first approach, obviating the need to rotate a dislocated, biomechanically unstable cervical spine, thereby minimizing the risk of iatrogenic spinal cord injury. While closed reduction has traditionally been achieved with Gardner-Wells tongs and weights, this reduction method require

Closed-loop neuromodulation is a promising technique for treating neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and epilepsy. However, induced electrical stimulation artifacts remain one of the main challenges of closed-loop neuromodulation technology. Existing methods for removing these artifacts are not robust enough to restore the lost spectral and statistical characteristics of neural recordings and are not efficient enough for real-time applications. In this study, we propose a novel artifact reduction method based on the modeling of the brain signals that can remove stimulus artifac

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is considered a potentially efficacious technology to modulate response inhibition, but few studies have compared different paradigms and clarified their neurophysiological mechanisms. Thus, to investigate the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on the right inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) for improving response inhibition in healthy male adults, simultaneously using fNIRS to monitor prefrontal cortex (PFC) hemodynamic changes during tES intervention. State anxiety involves transient feelings of tension and nervousness in response to threats, which can escalate into anxiety disorders if persistent. Despite treatments, 30%-50% of individuals show limited improvement, and neurophysiological mechanisms of treatment responsiveness remain unclear, requiring the development of objective biomarkers. In this study, multimodal electrophysiological parameters are monitored: heart rate variability (high frequency (HF), low frequency (LF), LF/HF ratio), EEG beta and alpha relative power, and brain-to-heart connectivity in participants with real-life st

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a common phenomenon when using visual devices such as smartphones and virtual reality applications, with symptoms including nausea, fatigue, and headache. To date, the neuro-cognitive processes underlying VIMS are not fully understood. Previous studies using electroencephalography (EEG) delivered mixed findings, with some reporting an increase in delta and theta power, and others reporting increases in alpha and beta frequencies. The goal of the study was to gain further insight into EEG correlates for VIMS. Participants viewed a VIMS-inducing visual

Accelerated postsynaptic remodelling and disturbance of neuromuscular transmission are common features of autoimmune neurodegenerative diseases. Homer protein isoform expression, crosslinking activity and neuromuscular subcellular localisation are studied in mouse hind limb muscles of an experimentally induced autoimmune model of Myasthenia Gravis (EAMG) and correlated to motor end plate integrity. Soleus (SOL), extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and gastrocnemius (GAS) skeletal muscles are investigated. nAChR membrane clusters were studied to monitor neuromuscular junction (NMJ) integrity. Fibre

Most patients with idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) will develop an overt α-synucleinopathy over time, with a rate of phenoconversion of 73.5% after 12 years from diagnosis. Several markers of phenoconversion were identified; however, most studies investigated biomarkers separately, with retrospective study designs, in small cohorts or without standardized data collection methods. The risk FActoRs PREdictive of phenoconversion in idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder: the Italian STudy (FARPRESTO) is a multicentric longitudinal retrospective and prospective study with a cohort of

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In the last decade, antibodies targeting cell adhesion molecules of the node of Ranvier were described in patients with autoimmune neuropathies. These nodal/paranodal antibodies associate with specific clinicopathological features that are different from classical chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). In this review, we will summarize recent findings establishing autoimmune nodopathies (AN) as a new category of autoimmune neuropathies.
RECENT FINDINGS: AN include anti-contactin 1, anti-contactin-associated protein 1, anti-neurofascin 155 and anti-pan-neu

Background and Purpose. Although acute meningitis and encephalitis are known to cause cognitive dysfunction, the prognostic values of neuropsychological and neurophysiological tests in predicting clinical outcomes are seldom studied. We investigated specific neurocognitive dysfunction and event-related potentials (ERPs), which can predict functional outcomes in patients with acute meningitis and encephalitis. Methods. We enrolled consecutive adult patients with acute meningitis and encephalitis and performed neuropsychological tests and ERP studies using a passive auditory oddball paradigm at

In this video, we highlight the anatomy involved with microsurgical resection of a giant T11/T12 conus cauda equina schwannoma. Spinal schwannoma remains the third most common intradural spinal tumor. Tumors undergoing gross total resection usually do not recur. To our knowledge, this is the first video case report of giant cauda equina schwannoma resection. A 55-year-old female presented with paraparesis and urinary retention. Lumbar spine MRI revealed a contrast-enhancing intradural extramedullary tumor at the T11/T12 level. Surgery was performed in the prone position with intraoperative neu

BACKGROUND: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited metabolic disorder characterized by reduced activity of phenylalanine hydroxylase resulting in elevated blood phenylalanine (Phe) concentration. Despite some obvious ocular changes, the disorder has been poorly recognized by ophthalmologists. Neurophysiologic tests imply prolonged reaction time correlating with increased phenylalanine blood concentrations. We aimed to test saccadic reaction time in PKU patients in dependency of blood phenylalanine concentrations.
METHODS: Nineteen biochemically diagnosed PKU patients and 100 controls completed
