Prevalence and Correlates of Caregiver-Reported Mental Health Conditions in Youth With Autism Spectrum Disorder in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Mental health conditions (MHCs) have substantial personal and economic costs for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); yet, a current population-based prevalence estimate is lacking. METHODS: This study included 42,283 caregivers of children (ages 3-17 years) from the 2016 population-based National Survey of Children's Health. Prevalence and correlates of caregiver-reported MHCs were estimated in children with ASD and compared with those in children with intellectual disability (ID), children with special health care needs (SHCN), and "all others" (no ASD, SHCN, or ID). Parenting of men with co-occurring intimate partner violence and substance abuse.

No studies to date have compared parenting behaviors of men with co-occurring intimate partner violence (IPV) and substance abuse (SA) with community controls. This study was designed to document mediators of differences in parenting behavior of fathers and the emotional-behavioral problems of their children for men with co-occurring SA and IPV. The self-reported parenting (negative, positive and coparenting behaviors) and the child emotional-behavioral problems of 43 fathers with children aged 2 to 6 years with a recent history of SA + IPV were compared to a sample of 43 community control fat

[The effect of hyperbilirubinemia and phototherapy on the behavior organization of newborn infants].

Hyperbilirubinemia is the most common problem experienced by neonates and has to be treated with phototherapy. The effects of hyperbilirubinemia and/or phototherapy on the behavior of neonates is investigated in this study by means of Brazelton Neonatal Behavior Assessment Scale. 21 jaundiced infants who received phototherapy (serum bilirubin above 25 mumol/l) are compared with 36 mildly jaundiced infants (150-250 mumol/l) and 35 control infants without any clinical sign of hyperbilirubinemia. The results shows the impact of hyperbilirubinemia on motor performance and the additional impact of

A longitudinal examination of parent-reported emotional-behavioral functioning of children with mild to moderate chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Children with mild to moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk for deficits in neurocognition. Less is known about how CKD affects emotional-behavioral functioning in this population. METHODS: Parent ratings of emotional-behavioral functioning at baseline and over time were examined for 845 children with mild to moderate CKD using the Behavior Assessment System for Children, Second Edition Parent Rating Scales (BASC-2 PRS). Associations with demographic and disease-related predictors were also examined. RESULTS: Children with mild to moderate CKD had parent-rep

Behavior analysis: thriving, but how about its future?

Behavior analysis has been thriving by continuing to make important theoretical and empirical contributions to a wide array of problems, as well as by contributing to interdisciplinary research. Applied research in behavior analysis is flourishing. Despite these positive signs there may be an erosion of support for basic research in animal learning and behavior, including behavior analysis. Increased attention by behavior analysts to fundamental problems in areas of cognition, including decision-making and language, may help behavior analysis to evolve more successfully. An experimental analys

Executive and behavioral functioning in pediatric frontal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy, as a chronic and neurological disease, is generally associated with an increased risk for social and emotional behavior problems in children. These findings are mostly derived from studies on children with different epilepsy types. However, there is limited information about the associations between frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and cognitive and behavioral problems. The aim of this study was to examine relationships between FLE and executive and behavioral functioning reported by parents and teachers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Teachers and parents of 32 children (18 boys, 14 g

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome in identical twins.

The problem we studied relates to the inheritance of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome. The method was the investigation, including blood studies, of a pair of twins who both were affected with the syndrome. It was concluded that the twins were identical and this added to the evidence of the heritability of the disorder. The twins were affected with other but related problems of behavior; considerable similarities were found in their behavior and behavioral problems. No family history of this or tic-like disorders could be obtained. Reduction of tics occurred when haloperidol treatment began.

Family-Peer Linkages for Children with Intellectual Disability and Children with Learning Disabilities.

Family interactions are potential contexts for children with intellectual and learning disabilities to develop skillful social behaviors needed to relate effectively with peers. This study examined problem solving interactions within families of elementary school-age children (7-11 years) with intellectual disability (n = 37), specific learning disabilities (n =48), and without disabilities (n = 22). After accounting for group differences in children's behaviors and peer acceptance, across all groups, mothers' behaviors that encouraged egalitarian problem solving predicted more engaged and ski

An Examination of Exposure to Traumatic Events and Symptoms and Strengths for Children Served in a Behavioral Health System of Care.

The present study examined how exposure to traumatic events impacts children with severe emotional disturbance who are being served in a school-based system of care. Multilevel growth curve models were used to examine the relationships between a child's history of traumatic events (physical abuse, sexual abuse, or domestic violence) and behavioral and emotional strengths, internalizing problem behaviors, or externalizing problem behaviors over 18 months. Results indicate that children receiving services (N = 134) exhibited increased emotional and behavioral strengths and decreased internalizin…

Transdiagnostic Symptom Domains Have Distinct Patterns of Association With Head Motion During Multimodal Imaging in Children.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear how transdiagnostic symptoms including attention, disruptive behavior, and internalizing problems are linked to in-scanner motion in children across structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In the current study, we examined whether transdiagnostic symptoms of attention, disruptive behavior, and internalizing problems were associated with scanner motion in children during multimodal imaging. METHODS: In 9045 children ages 9 to 10 years in the ABCD (Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development) Study, logistic regression and linear mixed-effects models we

Factors associated with DSM-5 severity level ratings for autism spectrum disorder.

The newest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed., DSM-5) introduced substantial changes to the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder, including new severity level ratings for social communication and restricted and repetitive behavior domains. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of these new severity ratings and to examine their relation to other measures of severity and clinical features. Participants included 248 children with autism spectrum disorder who received diagnostic evaluations at one of six Autism Treatment Network si

Genetic Correlation between Child Callous-Unemotional Behaviors and Fear Recognition Deficit: Evidence for a Neurocognitive Endophenotype.

This study investigates emotion recognition deficits as candidate neurocognitive endophenotypes for callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors. Using a twin design, we tested genetic correlations between child CU behaviors and poor processing of fearful and sad facial expressions. Participants were 504 twin pairs (209 MZ pairs; 295 DZ pairs) from the Quebec Newborn Twin Study, a longitudinal study of a population-based sample of twins. Teachers in kindergarten and first grade rated children's CU behaviors and other behavior problems (attention deficit and hyperactivity symptoms, physical aggression, a

The Connection Between Sleep Problems and Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties in Autistic Children: A Network Analysis.

The interactions between sleep problems, autism symptoms and emotional and behavioural difficulties were explored using network analysis in 240 autistic children (mean age: 8.8 years, range 5-13 years) with moderate to severe sleep problems. Findings revealed a highly connected and interpretable network, with three separate clusters identified of the modelled variables. Depression, anxiety and behavioural difficulties were the most central variables of the network. Depression, anxiety and restricted repetitive and stereotyped patterns behaviours (RRBs) were the strongest bridging variables in

Microsocial analysis of dyadic interactions with toddlers and mothers with borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is known for disruptions in mother-child interaction, but possible underlying patterns of micro-behavior are barely understood. This is the first study examining behavioral dyadic synchrony-the coordinated and reciprocal adaptation of behavior-and regulation on a micro-level and relating it to macro-behavior in mothers with BPD and their toddlers. Twenty-five mothers with BPD and 29 healthy mothers participated with their 18- to 36-month-old toddlers in a frustration-inducing paradigm. Mother and toddler behavior was continuously micro-coded for gaze, affe

The bidirectional relationship between head injuries and conduct problems: longitudinal modelling of a population-based birth cohort study.

Childhood head injuries and conduct problems increase the risk of aggression and criminality and are well-known correlates. However, the direction and timing of their association and the role of their demographic risk factors remain unclear. This study investigates the bidirectional links between both from 3 to 17 years while revealing common and unique demographic risks. A total of 8,603 participants (50.2% female; 83% White ethnicity) from the Millennium Cohort Study were analysed at 6 timepoints from age 3 to 17. Conduct problems were parent-reported for ages 3 to 17 using the Strengths and
