Chondrosarcoma is a malignancy of the mesenchymal tissue derived from transformed cells that produce the cartilage matrix. In the neck area, it represents less than 0.5% of malignant tumor pathology. Chondrosarcoma of the hyoid bone is extremely rare, only 20 cases having been published so far (PubMed 2014). We present the case of a 30-year-old patient from the urban area, admitted in the ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) Emergency Service with inspiratory dyspnea, dysphagia, stomatolalia, with evolutive and progressive clinical history of 2-3 months. Endoscopic examination revealed a pharyngolaryngeal

Nasal reconstruction has been analyzed extensively in adults but not in children. The purpose of this article is to review the authors' experience with the forehead flap for nasal reconstruction in 10 children under the age of 10 during a 10-year period. Outcomes were assessed by an objective grading system for cosmetic surgical results. Subjective criteria were also applied by an assistant surgeon and by the patients' relatives. Appropriate results were obtained by the following principles: (1) A modified approach that considers three subunits consisting of the dorsum, tip, and ala was used;

Relapsing polychondritis (RPC) is an immune-mediated systemic disease characterized by recurring inflammatory episodes in cartilage structures, mainly in the ears, nose, and respiratory tract. It is associated with various systemic and ocular manifestations, such as scleritis, the most common ocular feature of RPC. Scleromalacia perforans (SP) is a rare and severe form of anterior scleritis that appears as a dark bluish discoloration and bulging of a thinned-out sclera in the absence of pain or redness. This case report describes a 30-year-old Asian male who presented a seven-year history of b

BACKGROUND: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare, life-threatening disorder caused by abnormal histiocytes and T cell activation. In adults, it is predominantly associated with infections, cancers, and autoimmune diseases. Relapsing polychondritis (RP), another rare disease, is diagnosed based on symptoms without specific tests, featuring cartilage inflammation characterized by swelling, redness, and pain, rarely inducing HLH.
CASE SUMMARY: A 74-year-old woman visited the emergency room with a fever of 38.6 °C. Blood tests, cultures, and imaging were performed to evaluate fever.

This study investigates the development of the primary and secondary jaw joints in humans, focusing on their concomitance and subsequent disconnection. Development begins with the primary temporomandibular joint as a connection between Meckel's cartilage and the incus, while the secondary temporomandibular joint develops anteriorly as an articulation between the mandibular condyle and the mandibular fossa. Previous research in mice has provided insights into the morphogenesis of these joints, but their specific development of the 3D morphogenesis in humans remains unclear. To address this gap,

Otosclerosis is a pagetoid proliferation of bone remodeling, vascular proliferation, bone resorption and new bone formation in the tympanic region of the temporal bone. The resulting anklyosis of the stapes footplate as it articulates with the oval window is the most common cause of conductive hearing loss in young to middle aged, predominantly Caucasian individuals. The characteristic histologic features have been well documented by autopsy studies of the temporal bone. Although stapedectomy is the surgical treatment for otosclerosis, the stapes specimen may be submitted for gross examination

BACKGROUND: The full creation of an ear requires 2 reconstruction stages. In the second stage of reconstruction, the cartilaginous framework placed at first stage is separated from the head creating an auriculocephalic sulcus. Then a piece of rib cartilage is placed in the sulcus to maintain this separation and is covered with tissue that allows the integration of a full-thickness skin graft.
METHODS: A descriptive study based on the pre and postoperative medical records and photographic archives of patients diagnosed with microtia who underwent separation of the cartilaginous framework from

Defects affecting the anterior wall of the tympanal bone can result from trauma, infection, neoplasm or previous local surgery. An anatomic variation, namely the persistence of the foramen tympanicum, can also be encountered. When symptomatic, surgical reconstruction may be indicated. The aim of this study was to identify the surgical treatments of symptomatic foramen tympanicum found in the literature and detail our innovative reconstruction technique. A bibliographic research was conducted in PubMed database in March 2020, without time limitation. Papers dealing with surgical management of a

INTRODUCTION: Handle of malleus fracture is a rare condition with <100 cases having been reported. The clinical presentation is conductive hearing loss following a history of trauma, typically, during manipulation of the external auditory canal. The diagnosis of the condition is clinical and radiological. The options for treatment are either a hearing aid or ossiculoplasty. We describe an isolated case of malleus handle fracture after trauma associated with manipulation of the external auditory canal.
CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old female, reported a right ear trauma. She suffered immediate otalg

Many techniques and graft materials have been used for the reconstruction of the tympanic membrane. We conducted a retrospective study to compare anatomic and functional outcomes of type 1 tympanoplasty that we performed with boomerang-shaped chondroperichondrial cartilage grafts (BSGs) and shield-shaped chondroperichondrial cartilage grafts (SSGs) in pediatric patients. Our study population was made up 121 patients-61 boys and 60 girls, aged 7 to 16 years (mean: 12.4)-who had undergone a type 1 tympanoplasty. Patients were divided into two groups according to the grafting technique used; ther

Prominent ear deformity is a common congenital deformity of the external ear affecting 5% of the general population. Although this is a harmless deformity, several publications demonstrate the psychological distress, emotional trauma, and behavioral problems that this deformity can inflict on children. As a result of these concerns, corrective prominent ear surgery is now widely performed as a prophylactic surgery.A laterally based perichondrioadipodermal flap and a medially based adipoperichondrial flap were elevated. A subdermal pocket was prepared over mastoid bone. Medially based adipoperi

OBJECTIVE: Careful operative timing is required for children undergoing microtia repair using autologous costochondral grafting. This operation is performed as early as age 6 in efforts to treat children before school matriculation while allowing for sufficient rib growth. There remains a paucity of data regarding cartilaginous growth of the ribs and synchondrosis routinely harvested during microtia repair. This study employs CT imaging to generate normative costochondral growth characteristics in children.
STUDY DESIGN: A population-based study was performed.
SETTING: Tertiary care children

We have generated transgenic (tg) mice expressing HLA-DQ8alphabeta (DQA1*0301/DQB*0302) or HLA-DQ6alphabeta (DQA1*0103/DQB1*0601) molecules lacking endogenous murine class II expression (A beta0) to investigate the ability of these HLA class II to present type II collagen (CII) and induce collagen-induced arthritis. The DQ8alphabeta tg mice responded strongly to CII, developing severe arthritis, while DQ6alphabeta tg mice were nonresponsive to CII. The addition of the mixed haplotype DQ8alpha6beta molecule did not significantly influence CII reactivity. To examine the interaction of DQ6alphabe

Introduction: Noggin encoding (NOG) gene plays a critical role in early embryogenesis and development of bones, joints, cartilage, eyes, and neural tissue. The NOG gene encodes the noggin protein. Noggin is the only secreted inhibitor of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) that is associated with abnormal phenotypes in humans. The most commonly observed manifestations of NOG gene mutations include bilateral conductive hearing loss, proximal symphalangism, broad thumbs, hyperopia, and a distinct facial appearance. This genetic disorder was first reported in 1990 by Teunissen and Cremers. Since the
