Language and communication in children with complex tourette syndrome: Insights from five mixed methods case studies.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to understand and describe language skills and day-to-day communication in five children with complex Tourette syndrome. METHOD: We conducted five scaffolded mixed methods case studies. Psychosocial functioning and language skills were measured using standardised tests. We collected information about day-to-day communication using communication log books and semi-structured qualitative interviews. Communication was considered using the bioecological model with a focus on microstructure' contexts (i.e. school, home, and peer interaction). RESULT: All children had acc

Swallowing skill training approaches and underlying motor learning principles: A scoping review.

PURPOSE: While dysphagia rehabilitation has traditionally focused on muscle strengthening, there is an increasing shift towards harnessing motor cortical plasticity to modify swallowing motor output via swallowing skill training. We reviewed current swallowing skill training approaches and framed existing evidence in the context of motor learning principles. METHOD: Searches were conducted across six databases (Scopus, CINHAL, MEDLINE, PUBMED, Emcare, and Web of Science) and the grey literature. Two researchers independently screened studies for inclusion using Covidence. English publications

Pediatricians' Knowledge of Bilingualism and Provision of Culturally Responsive Care for Latine Dual Language Learners: A Pilot Study.

PURPOSE: Pediatricians are the first professionals to provide guidance about language development to families with young children and referrals for those who may have a language or communication disorder. One-quarter of children in the United States are dual language learners (DLLs), yet there is little information about pediatrician's readiness to provide culturally and linguistically responsive care for these children. This pilot study sought to examine pediatricians' knowledge of bilingual language development and its relation to the provision of language and literacy promotion and developm

Stronger Together: A Qualitative Exploration of Social Connectedness in Parkinson's Disease in the Digital Era.

PURPOSE: Social isolation is a common consequence of Parkinson's disease (PD), and social prescribing has become a crucial aspect for fostering well-being in this population. In fact, group work has been shown to improve levels of social connectedness in older adults across different domains. Increased technology use in older adults may also contribute to increased social connections, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, the impact of digital use on social connectedness remains to be further explored in individuals with PD. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the perc

Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scores Do Not Associate With Communication Challenges Reported by Adults With Alzheimer's Disease or Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSES: Screening for cognitive-communication challenges in people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or Parkinson's disease (PD) may benefit from multiple kinds of information about the client (e.g., patient-reported, performance-based). The purposes of this report are (a) to describe, using recently published score range descriptors (e.g., "mild," "moderate"), the patient-reported communication challenges of people with AD or PD using the Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB) and the Aphasia Communication Outcome Measure (ACOM); and (b) to examine the relationships between the performanc

Self-Improved Language Production in Nonfluent Aphasia Through Automated Recursive Self-Feedback.

BACKGROUND: Persons with nonfluent aphasia (PWNA) use feedback from external agents (e.g., speech-language pathologists) and self-feedback to improve their language production. The extent to which PWNA can improve their language production using their self-feedback alone is underexplored. In a proof-of-concept study, we developed an automated recursive self-feedback procedure to demonstrate the extent to which two PWNA who used self-feedback alone improved their production of sentences from trained and untrained scripts. In the current study, we use the Rehabilitation Response Specification Sy

Increasing Motivation Increases Intelligibility Benefits of Perceptual Training in Dysarthria.

PURPOSE: Perceptual training offers a promising, listener-targeted option for improving intelligibility of dysarthric speech. Cognitive resources are required for learning, and theoretical models of listening effort and engagement account for a role of listener motivation in allocation of such resources. Here, we manipulate training instructions to enhance motivation to test the hypothesis that increased motivation increases the intelligibility benefits of perceptual training. METHOD: Across two data collection sites, which differed with respect to many elements of study design including age
