Cognitive style and plebe turnover at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Students entering (N = 1,134) the U.S. Naval Academy class of 2000 were administered the Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory on the first day of Plebe Summer, a 7-wk. nonacademic training program completed by all entering students in the summer prior to the freshman year. The mean score on Innovation cognitive style for this sample of plebes was approximately a standard deviation lower than those of five other undergraduate student samples from nonmilitary universities. Furthermore, the 98 plebes who voluntarily withdrew before completing the program scored higher on the average on Innovation

Comparison of Cognitive Intervention Strategies for Individuals With Alzheimer's Disease: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-analysis.

Accumulating evidence has shown the effectiveness of cognitive interventions, which can be divided into cognitive training (CT), cognitive stimulation (CS), cognitive rehabilitation (CR), and combined interventions (i.e., cognitive interventions combined with other non-pharmacological interventions such as physical exercise), in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the effectiveness of cognitive interventions varies greatly among studies and more comprehensive studies are required. We aimed to evaluate whether the current evidence shows that cognitive interventions are effective…

An open pilot study of an internet-delivered intervention targeting self-perceived residual cognitive symptoms after major depressive disorder.

Residual cognitive symptoms are associated with reduced daily life functioning, quality of life and represent a risk factor for relapse of major depressive disorder (MDD). There are few studies targeting self-perceived residual cognitive symptoms after MDD. The current open pilot study examines clinical outcomes and feasibility of a novel internet-delivered cognitive enhancement treatment for mood disorders specifically tailored to target self-perceived residual cognitive symptoms after MDD. A total of 43 adults with self-perceived residual cognitive symptoms after MDD were included. Participa

Classification of Electrophysiological Signatures With Explainable Artificial Intelligence: The Case of Alarm Detection in Flight Simulator.

Relevant sounds such as alarms are sometimes involuntarily ignored, a phenomenon called inattentional deafness. This phenomenon occurs under specific conditions including high workload (i.e., multitasking) and/or cognitive fatigue. In the context of aviation, such an error can have drastic consequences on flight safety. This study uses an oddball paradigm in which participants had to detect rare sounds in an ecological context of simulated flight. Cognitive fatigue and cognitive load were manipulated to trigger inattentional deafness, and brain activity was recorded via electroencephalography

Expiratory Musculature Targeted Resistance Training Modulates Neural Connections During Swallowing Tasks: Preliminary fMRI Evidence.

Purpose: Strength gains and synergistic muscle group activations due to expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) lead to beneficial changes in several upper aerodigestive functions, including swallowing; however, there may be a potential top-down influence through neuroplasticity. The current study investigated changes in brain activation patterns during swallowing tasks before and after 4 weeks of EMST. Methods: Five right-handed, healthy young adult men aged 19-35 (mean = 28.8, SD = 2.68) participated in 4 weeks of EMST. All participants performed a swallow task, and blood-oxygen level-dep

Time-stratified modeling of cognitive impairment risk in rural aging populations: Nomogram development (2011) and external validation (2013) using CHARLS.

BACKGROUND: With China's aging population, cognitive impairment has become a pressing public health issue. Rural older adults face disproportionately higher risks, yet remain underrepresented in predictive modeling studies. This study aimed to develop and externally validate a nomogram to estimate cognitive impairment risk among rural older adults in China. METHODS: Data were obtained from 2228 rural participants aged ≥60 years in the 2011 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), randomly assigned to training and internal validation cohorts. An additional 1854 rural participan

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) plus attention bias modification (ABM) reduces anxiety sensitivity and depressive symptoms in panic disorder: A pilot randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive bias theories propose that reducing threat hypervigilance in mental disorders can augment cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) outcomes. However, no studies have tested whether adding attention bias modification (ABM) can effectively enhance CBT's effects on anxiety sensitivity (AS), electromyography (EMG), and skin conductance (SC) for panic disorder (PD). This pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) thus aimed to evaluate the efficacy of CBT + ABM (vs. CBT plus attention training placebo; PBO) on those outcomes. METHOD: This study is a secondary analysis (Baker et al., 2

Cognitive bias modification of inferential flexibility.

This research examines the effects of a cognitive bias modification procedure for facilitating inferential flexibility, on inferences, mood, and state rumination. Participants were presented with training scenarios, followed by two consecutive inferences for each scenario. In the training condition, participants repeatedly practiced shifting from a negative inference to a positive one. But in the control condition, the two inferences were of the same valence and no shifting occurred. The training successfully promoted the intended inferential shift on new scenarios (d = 0.72). Moreover, traine

Toilet Training: Common Questions and Answers.

Toilet training is a significant developmental milestone in early childhood. Most U.S. children achieve the physiologic, cognitive, and emotional development necessary for toilet training by 18 to 30 months of age. Markers of readiness for toilet training include being able to walk, put on and remove clothing, and follow parental instruction; expressive language; awareness of a full bladder or rectum; and demonstrated dissatisfaction with a soiled diaper. Other readiness cues include imitating toileting behavior, expressing desire to toilet, and demonstrating bladder or bowel control (staying

Exploring core competencies for language facilitation in parent training programs in AAC.

The relationship between children and their caregivers is essential for the development of social, emotional, cognitive, and linguistic skills. This is especially critical for children with complex communication needs who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), as parents play a crucial role in supporting AAC integration within the home. However, communicating with a child who uses AAC does not come naturally and requires the learning of several specific skills. Various training programs have shown that, with appropriate training, parents and caregivers can develop the skills nec

Remediation of Allophonic Perception and Visual Attention Span in Developmental Dyslexia: A Joint Assay.

Categorical perception of phonemes and visual attention span are cognitive processes that contribute independently to poor reading skills in developmental dyslexia. We here explored whether training programs specifically targeting one or the other process do improve reading performance in dyslexic children. The dyslexic participants were trained using either the RapDys© program designed to improve phonemic perception or the MAEVA© program targeting visual attention span. Each participant was provided the two programs successively for intensive training. Results show specific effects of RapDys©
