This report describes the first clinical application of an autonomous oral robot for minimally invasive resection of a compound odontoma in a 16-year-old female, thereby filling a gap in both reported cases and standardized protocols. Oral examination and cone-beam computed tomography of the right mandible revealed a retained second deciduous molar, a congenitally missing first premolar, and a compound odontoma. The results of pulp vitality tests for the right mandibular second premolar and first molar were consistent with control teeth. Surgical planning involved the integration of cone-beam

BACKGROUND & PURPOSE: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw is a severe complication affecting up to 15% of head and neck cancer patients treated with radiotherapy. The ClinRad system, endorsed by ASCO/ISOO/MASCC, incorporates radiographic features for ORN severity classification, but variability in imaging use and specialty expertise may impact diagnostic accuracy. This study benchmarks physician performance in diagnosing and staging ORN across specialties and imaging modalities.
MATERIALS & METHODS: A retrospective diagnostic validation study was conducted at MD Anderson Cancer Center, involv

Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a rare, benign, fibro-osseous lesion of the jawbone characterised by replacement of the normal bone with fibrous tissue. The fibrous tissue shows varying amount of calcified structures resembling bone and/or cementum. The central variant of OF is rare, and shows predilection for mandible among the jawbone. Although it is classified as fibro-osseous lesion, it clinically behaves as a benign tumour and can grow to large size, causing bony swelling and facial asymmetry. This paper reports a case of large central OF of mandible in a 40-year-old male patient. The lesion wa

Keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) is considered one of the most aggressive odontogenic lesions presenting high recurrence rate which varies according to treatment modalities employed for management. The treatment rendered should have a lowest possible risk of recurrence and least morbidity while still eradicating the lesion. Although the radical treatment options like enucleation and en bloc resection are associated with lesser recurrences, these can lead to greater morbidity, especially in children with developing teeth and jaw bones, thus, emphasising need to consider more conservative

Salivary duct injury can be idiopathic, iatrogenic, or post-trauma and may result in sialocele or fistula. Most injuries regress spontaneously and botulinum toxin A is one of several therapeutic possibilities. We report a case of iatrogenic injury to the parotid duct after Mohs' micographic surgery for a squamous cell carcinoma excision in the left jaw region, treated by injection of botulinum toxin type A. Although the fistula by duct injury can be self-limiting, botulinum toxin injection by promoting the inactivity of the salivary gland allows rapid healing of the fistula.

Apert syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by craniofacial abnormalities, craniosynostosis and syndactyly. Nasotracheal intubation for a patient with Apert syndrome can be a challenge because of abnormal facial anatomy. We experienced the anesthetic management of a patient with Apert syndrome who underwent partial resection of mandible and cleft palate repair with nasotracheal intubation. Nasotracheal intubation using a gastric tube and extubation using an airway exchange catheter proved useful in this case of airway compromise.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) was originally considered a connective tissue disorder, primarily involving type 1 collagen. It is characterized by numerous skeletal and extraskeletal defects, including bone fragility, multiple fractures, blue sclerae, hearing deficits, skin and ligament laxity, and dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI). The authors describe a 24-year-old Japanese man with OI and DI who had an ossifying fibroma of the mandible. Segmental resection was performed, and the mandible was reconstructed by distraction osteogenesis with the transport segment technique. This is the first report

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ameloblastomas and keratocystic odontogenic tumors are major aggressive odontogenic tumors in the maxillomandibular regions, but the differentiation between these 2 tumors is frequently ineffective based on only conventional CT and MR imaging findings. Here, we evaluated diffusion-weighted MR imaging for the differentiation of these 2 odontogenic tumors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively studied 9 patients with ameloblastoma and 7 patients with keratocystic odontogenic tumor using diffusion-weighted MR imaging. Apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) of the nonenh

INTRODUCTION: We report a case of donor site morbidity late after harvesting a free fibular flap for reconstruction of the mandibular symphsis.
CASE REPORT: An 8-year-old boy presented a valgus deformity of the ankle 4 years harvesting of a vascularized fibular graft for mandibular reconstruction. The deformation was repaired with a tibial bone slit and pin fixation. The biomechanical result was very satisfactory, allowing normal gait.
DISCUSSION: We recall the rules for fibular flap harvesting needed to prevent deformation of the donor site in children aged less than 9 years.

In a 25-year-old woman with episodic periorbital-temporal pain who eventually developed a sixth nerve palsy, magnetic resonance imaging revealed a lesion predominantly in the Meckel cave that was found to be a capillary hemangioma arising from the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve. Hemangiomas of the Meckel cave must be considered in cases of facial pain with a sixth nerve palsy. even if there are no clinical findings of trigeminal neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: There are two established timepoints for microvascular bone reconstruction of the jaw in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC): 1. Primary reconstruction together with tumour resection and 2. Secondary reconstruction after successful adjuvant therapy. However, the decision between primary and secondary reconstruction remains controversial and is often made on a case-by-case basis.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare clinical outcomes of primary versus secondary osseous jaw reconstruction in patients with OSCC. The aim of this study was to retrospectively describe an

PURPOSE: A large number of anatomic variants occur in the lower limb arteries and the Peronea Arteria Magna (PAM) is a rare congenital variant where the fibular/peroneal artery becomes the dominant arterial supply to the leg foot, replacing hypoplastic anterior and posterior tibial arteries. It is imperative that the operative surgeon be aware of this anomaly prior to obtaining the fibula osteocutaneous free tissue flap (OFF) so that post-surgical limb loss can be prevented. METHODS: We present a case of a young male who was posted for reconstructive surgery with OFF, after undergoing right he

BACKGROUND: This prospective randomized controlled trial evaluates the effectiveness of bilateral mandibular nerve block and bilateral superficial cervical plexus nerve block under general anesthesia for patients undergoing extensive tongue cancer surgery. Given the considerable size of the surgical area and the prolonged duration associated with radical tongue cancer procedures, these factors significantly hinder postoperative recovery, particularly in elderly patients.
METHODS: For this study, 60 patients scheduled for elective radical tongue cancer surgery were enlisted. These individuals

PURPOSE: This study aims to identify radiomic features from contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) scans that differentiate osteoradionecrosis (ORN) from normal mandibular bone in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients treated with radiotherapy (RT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: CECT images from 150 patients with confirmed ORN diagnosis (2008-2018) at MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) were analyzed (80 % train, 20 % test). Radiomic features were extracted using PyRadiomics from manually segmented ORN regions and automated contralateral healthy mandible regions. Correlation analysis (r > 0.95) reduced features fo

Immediate reconstruction and dental rehabilitation for ablative defects of the head and neck in one surgery is now a commonly used technique among reconstructive surgeons. Often patients are edentulous or partially edentulous in the jaw opposing that with pathology. In this case, only rehabilitating the dental arch affected by pathology would not render the patient with a functional occlusion. We introduce the "super reconstruction" concept which includes not only rehabilitating the dental arch affected by pathology but also the opposing arch, giving the patient a fully functional occlusion at
