Transcriptomic profile in carbendazim-induced developmental defects in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos/larvae.

Carbendazim is a widely used fungicide to protect agricultural and horticultural crops against a wide array of fungal species. Published reports have shown that the wide usage of carbendazim resulted in reprotoxicity, carcinogenicity, immunotoxicity, and developmental toxicity in mammalian models. However, studies related to the developmental toxicity of carbendazim in aquatic organisms are not clear. To address this gap, an attempt was made by exposing zebrafish embryos to carbendazim (800 μg/L) and assessing the phenotypic and transcriptomic profile at different developmental stages [24 hour

Long-term follow-up of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis surgery with Harrington instrumentations: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

In the 1960s, Harrington instrumentation (HRI) revolutionized the surgical treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Despite the transition to more innovative techniques, concerns regarding its impact on sagittal alignment, associations with low back pain, and correction loss have consistently persisted. The aim of this meta-analysis is precisely to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes, as well as the complications of patients treated with HRI over an extended follow-up period. A systematic search of articles about AIS patients who underwent HRI and reported long-term outc

Trabecular bone score and its association with Cobb angle kyphosis in older men: a cross-sectional study for the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study.

UNLABELLED: Hyperkyphosis (HK), or accentuated forward spinal curvature, commonly affects older people, although its causes are not completely understood. We tested whether a measure of bone quality, trabecular bone score (TBS), is associated with HK in 1997 older men, and determined that men with degraded TBS were more likely to have HK. INTRODUCTION: While vertebral fractures and low bone mineral density (BMD) contribute to kyphosis progression, it is unknown whether the trabecular bone score (TBS) may provide additional information on bone quality that could influence the degree of kyphosi

Surgical Outcomes in Selective Laminectomy and Conventional Double-Door Laminoplasty for Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy.

Several postoperative problems have been reported in conventional cervical laminoplasty (C-LAMP), such as loss of cervical curvature, sagittal imbalance, and loss of range of motion (ROM). Selective laminectomy (S-LAM) is a less invasive procedure that may prevent the problems associated with conventional C-LAMP. In this study, the authors prospectively compared neurological outcomes and radiological parameters in C-LAMP and S-LAM for the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy. Fifty-three patients were enrolled, with 25 patients receiving conventional double-door C-LAMP and 28 patients

The validity and reliability of noninvasive methods for measuring kyphosis.

STUDY DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVE: To examine the interrater and intrarater reliability and validity of tools for measuring thoracic kyphosis, namely the digital inclinometer and the flexicurve. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Various methods are used to measure kyphosis, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Radiography is common, highly reliable, and valid but unsuitable for regular use because of radiation exposure and cost. Other clinical methods allow safe and rapid assessment of spinal curvature. The validity and reliability of some nclinometers have bee

Gastric motor and cardiovascular effects of insulin in dorsal vagal complex of the rat.

Insulin-binding sites exist in the lower brain stem of the rat, raising the possibility that the circulating hormone may have cardiovascular and gastric effects at this site. Therefore, we investigated the autonomic effects of applying rat insulin to the surface of the dorsal medulla (0.3 and 3 microU/rat) or microinjecting it into the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) (0.1-10 nU/site) in anesthetized rats. Application of rat insulin to the surface (3 microU/rat) and its microinjection into the DVC (1 and 10 nU/site) both evoked marked, albeit transient, increases in intragastric pressure, pyloric an

Sagittal Alignment Reciprocal Changes After Thoracolumbar/Lumbar Anterior Vertebral Body Tethering.

Background/Objective: The anterior vertebral body tethering (AVBT) technique, which preserves spinal mobility and avoids possible fusion problems in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients, continues to be increasingly used in spine surgery. The study aims to report the early-to-early-mid postoperative radiological results of thoracolumbar/lumbar AVBT on sagittal alignment, and the second aim is to compare AVBT with selective thoracic fusion (STF) and non-selective fusion (NSF) groups in AIS patients. Methods: Patients with a diagnosis of AIS were retrospectively evaluated in the study.

Intraoperative neuromonitoring alerts during surgery for congenital spinal deformity: prevalence, risk factors, and outcomes in a prospective study of 100 patients.

BACKGROUND: Surgical goals for congenital spinal deformity (CSD) include correction of deformity and prevention of progression without affecting neurological function. CSD has a higher incidence of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) alerts than other scoliosis types and a potential for risk of postoperative neurological deficit. This study investigates incidence, risk factors, and outcomes associated with IONM alerts in surgically treated CSD. METHODS: A prospectively collected pediatric database was queried for surgically managed patients with CSD. Demographic, surgical, and IONM details

The Efficacy of Trunk Bracing With an Instrumented Corrective Exercise on Spinal Deformity, Pulmonary Function, Trunk Muscle Endurance, and Quality of Life in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: Protocol for a Parallel Groups Clinical Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is a 3D spine distortion with an unidentified etiology. It results in noticeable trunk deformity, decreased muscle strength and endurance at the trunk, changes in chest volume, breathing issues, and ultimately a decline in the quality of life. Trunk bracing and corrective exercises make up most of the treatment of patients with scoliosis when their deformity is between 20° and 45°, and they have not yet attained skeletal maturity. Evidence suggests that spinal deformity in people with scoliosis may result from improper motor control. Automatic respon

Correlation analysis between the pulmonary function test and the radiological parameters of the main right thoracic curve in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Scoliosis causes thoracic deformities, and it is necessary to assess these changes in pulmonary function test (PFT). To determine how measurements of spinal and thoracic cage deformities are related to pulmonary function. METHODS: Seventy-two patients with main right thoracic curvature in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) underwent a PFT and a radiological parameter evaluation of spinal and thoracic cage deformities. Simple and multiple linear regressions were also used to note whether a combination of variables might better predict PFT values. Means were compared using the tw

Early follow-up outcomes after treatment of degenerative disc disease with the discover cervical disc prosthesis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Although anterior cervical decompression and fusion has been used successfully in the treatment of symptomatic radiculopathy and/or myelopathy, biomechanical studies have suggested possible deleterious effects of cervical fusion on adjacent level kinematics. The emergence of cervical arthroplasty as an alternative to arthrodesis may restore a more normal spinal movement and reduces a kinematic strain on adjacent segments. To date, with existing prostheses, the risk adjacent segment disease has not been proven to be reduced using artificial disc replacement. PURPOSE: The st

Pain and disability correlated with disc degeneration via magnetic resonance imaging in scoliosis patients.

Prior imaging studies of scoliosis patients attempted to demonstrate a relationship between plain radiographic curve patterns and curve progression and pain, or used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to focus on spinal cord abnormalities. Pain in scoliosis patients may differ from nondeformity patients, yet may still be discogenic. The purpose of this study was to assess the possible relationship of degenerative disc findings on MRI to scoliosis patients' pain. This prospective study enrolled scoliosis and control patients, all of whom had assessment for back pain (visual analog scale) and disa

Loss of wbp11 causes multi-system developmental defects: a zebrafish model of VACTERL association.

INTRODUCTION: VACTERL association is a congenital disorder characterized by the non-random co-occurrence of vertebral, anal, cardiac, tracheo-esophageal, renal, and limb anomalies. WBP11 has been identified as a candidate causative gene; however, existing heterozygous Wbp11 knockout mice recapitulate only a subset of the patient phenotypes, most notably lacking the cardiac defects, which limits a comprehensive understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms. Whether WBP11 loss of function is sufficient to induce the full multi-system spectrum of VACTERL association in a vertebrate model remains une
