In early summer, 1990, 3590 schoolboys from the Al-Baha region of Saudi Arabia were assessed for their ocular status. Children from 15 schools were randomly selected to assess eye problems and visual defects. Of the boys examined 3521 (89.7%) had visual acuity of 20/30 or better and 3443 (95.9%) achieved 20/30 or better after correction. The main causes of visual impairment were refractive error in 260 (7.2%) and amblyopia in 58 (1.6%). Seventeen (0.5%) boys had strabismus. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis was found in 204 (5.7%). This study describes the age of onset, symptomatology, and clinical characteristics of 25 patients with intermittent esotropia. This subgroup of esotropic patients typically has onset prior to 10 years of age and shows excellent bifoveal fixation ability, reflected by a high degree of stereopsis. Squint is unfortunately a neglected subject in our country. It is considered only a cosmetic problem without realising that any manifest squint is a one eyed blindness which results in lack of binocular vision. Consequently there is no stereopsis. The management should be undertaken at the earliest possible age when development of uni-ocular as well as binocular vision is taking place. Once the visual system is mature, only cosmetic appearance can be improved, but not the vision.

Two gratings composed of lines were displayed one above the other, and the vernier threshold was measured as a function of spatial frequency and vertical separation between gratings for 12 strabismic and/or anisometropic amblyopes.
