INTRODUCTION: There have been no reports of the use of 3-Tesla magnetic resonance neurography (3T MRN) to characterize cervical radiculopathy. In particular, there are no reports of MRN of brachial plexus involvement in patients with cervical radiculopathy.
METHODS: We reviewed retrospectively 12 consecutive patients with cervical radiculopathy who underwent 3T MRN.
RESULTS: The median age was 54.5 years. Eleven of 12 patients were men. The distribution of nerve-root signal abnormality was correlated with intervertebral foraminal stenosis and the presence of muscles that exhibited weakness a

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) has a pivotal role in the pathogenesis and maintenance of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. Catheter-based renal denervation (RDN) is associated with a reduction of central sympathetic activity, muscle sympathetic nerve activity, and blood pressure in resistant hypertension. As renal afferent nerves are regulators of central sympathetic tone, RDN opens the possibility to modulate sympathetic activity, but without affecting peripheral chemoreceptors and mechanoreceptors in the heart and other organs. RDN was shown to reduce heart rate in humans and to reduce

A series of 36 patients who had a postoperative loss of the anterior or anterior lateral deltoid muscle after shoulder operations (i.e., acromioplasties, anterior shoulder reconstructions, or arthroplasty procedures) was referred to the senior author. Three patients last the function of their deltoid after an injury to the axillary nerve, and 33 patients lost deltoid function after loss of the origin of the deltoid from the clavicle and acromion. All patients were significantly disabled. All patients were dissatisfied with the result of the previous operation, and eight patients experienced pa

A consensus meeting was held to determine the best use and interpretation of electrophysiological data in the diagnosis of ALS. The utility of needle EMG and nerve conduction studies was affirmed. It is recommended that electrophysiological evidence for chronic neurogenic change should be taken as equivalent to clinical information in the recognition of involvement of individual muscles in a limb. In addition, in the context of a suspected clinical diagnosis of ALS, fasciculation potentials should be taken as equivalent to fibrillation potentials and positive sharp waves in recognising denerva

Achalasia is a disease of unknown origin in which there is a denervation of the myenteric plexus on the smooth muscle of the lower oesophageal sphincter, causing a cardial stenosis and a loss of efficacy of oesophageal peristalsis. The predominant symptoms are dysphagia for solids and liquids and regurgitation of the retained food. Occasionally, there may be oesophageal haemorrhage as a consequence of oesophagitis and stasis ulcers. An important but uncommon complication is the development of oesophageal cancer, which is typically squamous cell carcinoma. We report an exceptional case of a 77-

To determine whether Botulinum Toxin Type A (BTXA) has an effect on the Central Nervous System, the authors studied the excitability of the blink reflex recovery cycle in 12 patients with blepharospasm before and 3 weeks after unilateral BTXA injections. To avoid recording from severely denervated muscles, the R2 response of the blink reflex was obtained from the untreated orbicularis oculi with both ipsilateral and contralateral supraorbital nerve stimulation. Baseline recovery curves were compared with a control group (n = 11) and showed an enhanced recovery of the R2 component. There were n

A case of bilateral femoral neuropathy as a complication of vaginal hysterectomy is presented. A 45-year-old woman developed weakness of both quadriceps, absence of bilateral knee jerks, and numbness over bilateral anteromedial thighs and medial lower legs after a vaginal hysterectomy. Electromyographic examination revealed evidence of denervation in the bilateral quadriceps. A nerve conduction study showed prolonged distal latencies and markedly reduced amplitude of the compound muscle action potentials in bilateral femoral nerves. It is suggested that this complication is caused by a microva

Six cases of suprascapular nerve entrapment by a ganglion cyst within the spinoglenoid notch or developed from the glenoid labrum are reported. Causes of injury or entrapment of the suprascapular nerve are described including traction or kinking of the nerve, trauma, repetitive exercise, or compression by ganglion cyst. The patients had non specific pain, weakness, and atrophy of the spinatus musculature. Electromyography showed evidence of denervation atrophy. Patients had plain radiographs, arthrography, CT-arthrography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MR-arthrography. Masses that cause

The clinical features and preoperative and postoperative electrodiagnostic studies were reviewed in two professional pitchers with a suprascapular neuropathy. These studies demonstrate that denervation of the infraspinatus and/or supraspinatus muscle is not always due to entrapment of the nerve at the suprascapular or spinoglenoid notches, as is often proposed. Similar studies in healthy pitchers during spring training and again at midseason demonstrate that slowing of suprascapular nerve conduction is detectable in some cases as the season progresses. Sagittal sections of a cadaver with the a

We herein evaluate the correlation among cystometry, urethral pressure profilometry and pelvic floor electromyography in 137 female patients. The predominant symptom was frequency in 40 patients, urge incontinence in 31 and stress incontinence in 66. There appeared to be a correlation between urge incontinence and a hyperreflexic cystometrogram but no correlation was noted between either frequency or stress incontinence and the cystometrogram profile. The urethral pressure profile showed a correlation between stress incontinence and the lowest profile measurements. Frequency and urge incontine

Mutations in the survival motor neuron (SMN1) gene lead to the neuromuscular disease spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Although SMA is primarily considered as a motor neuron disease, the importance of muscle defects in its pathogenesis has not been fully examined. We use both primary cell culture and two different SMA model mice to demonstrate that reduced levels of Smn lead to a profound disruption in the expression of myogenic genes. This disruption was associated with a decrease in myofiber size and an increase in immature myofibers, suggesting that Smn is crucial for myogenic gene regulation

OBJECTIVES: To create a model of peripheral neuropathy and explore the potential of using muscle-derived cells (MDCs) to facilitate the regeneration of autonomic nerves and improve bladder function. Damage to the peripheral nerves that innervate the bladder from radical pelvic surgery is refractory to the currently available treatments.
METHODS: Rat MDCs were isolated from the gastrocnemius muscle using the preplate technique. The unilateral pelvic nerve was cut in female Sprague-Dawley rats. Three experimental groups were included: control (n = 5); unilateral pelvic nerve transected with sha

This experiment was designed to determine mechanisms of change in nonadrenergic, noncholinergic (NANC) inhibitory neurons in the ileum after small bowel transplantation (SBT) in the rat and whether nitric oxide (NO) serves as an important NANC inhibitory neurotransmitter in the rat ileum. Eight groups of rats (N > or =8 rats/group) were studied: neurally intact unoperated controls; rats one week after anesthesia and sham celiotomy; and separate groups one and eight weeks after either 40 min of cold ischemia of the jejunoileum, combined jejunal and ileal intestinal transection/reanastomosis, or

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a form of motor neuron disease affecting primarily children characterised by the loss of lower motor neurons (MNs). Breakdown of the neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) is an early pathological event in SMA. However, not all motor neurons are equally vulnerable, with some populations being lost early in the disease while others remain intact at the disease end-stage. A thorough understanding of the basis of this selective vulnerability will give critical insight into the factors which prohibit pathology in certain motor neuron populations and consequentl

Chronic bronchitis is a chronic, progressive disease that is difficult to treat. Despite much effort, patients remain highly symptomatic. Currently, a number of innovative bronchoscopic treatments for this disease are under investigation. Liquid nitrogen metered cryospray, bronchial rheoplasty and balloon desobstruction all aim to destroy the hyperplastic goblet cells and excess submucous glands using different strategies. These therapies are in an early phase of clinical research and larger randomised controlled trials are needed to confirm the pilot data available and to evaluate the treatme

Human adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) have a potential for the treatment of peripheral nerve injury. Recent studies demonstrated that stem cells can mediate therapeutic effect by secreting exosomes. We aimed to investigate the effect of human ASCs derived exosomes (ASC-Exos) on peripheral nerve regeneration in vitro and in vivo. Our results showed after being internalized by Schwann cells (SCs), ASC-Exos significantly promoted SC proliferation, migration, myelination, and secretion of neurotrophic factors by upregulating corresponding genes in vitro. We next evaluated the efficacy of ASC-Exo

INTRODUCTION: Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) is a rare presynaptic disorder of the neuromuscular junction. Electrodiagnosis is characterized by compound muscle action potentials of small amplitude at rest, normalizing immediately after brief exercise or high-rate nerve stimulation. Needle electromyographic (EMG) activity is classically described as normal or myogenic.
CASE: We report the case of a young patient with a non-paraneoplastic LEMS in whom the initial electroneuromyographic examination showed neurogenic changes in needle EMG concomitant with typical features of presynaptic
