Computed tomography of nonanesthetized cats with upper airway obstruction.

Upper airway obstruction is a potentially life-threatening problem in cats and for which a noninvasive, sensitive method rapid diagnosis is needed. The purposes of this prospective study were to describe a computed tomography (CT) technique for nonanesthetized cats with upper airway obstruction, CT characteristics of obstructive diseases, and comparisons between CT findings and findings from other diagnostic tests. Ten cats with clinical signs of upper airway obstruction were recruited for the study. Four cats with no clinical signs of upper airway obstruction were recruited as controls. All c

Biomechanical modeling of the three-dimensional aspects of human vocal fold dynamics.

Human voice originates from the three-dimensional (3D) oscillations of the vocal folds. In previous studies, biomechanical properties of vocal fold tissues have been predicted by optimizing the parameters of simple two-mass-models to fit its dynamics to the high-speed imaging data from the clinic. However, only lateral and longitudinal displacements of the vocal folds were considered. To extend previous studies, a 3D mass-spring, cover-model is developed, which predicts the 3D vibrations of the entire medial surface of the vocal fold. The model consists of five mass planes arranged in vertical

Performance analysis after prosthetic laryngoplasty and bilateral ventriculectomy for laryngeal hemiplegia in horses: 70 cases (1986-1991).

Medical records of 70 horses diagnosed with left laryngeal hemiplegia that were treated by use of prosthetic laryngoplasty combined with bilateral ventriculectomy were examined. Degree of arytenoid cartilage abduction that had resulted from the prosthesis had been graded before the horse was discharged from the hospital. Follow-up information through owner/trainer questioning was acquired for 55 horses. Information concerning the type and frequency of complications, if any, was recorded, along with a determination of owner/trainer satisfaction regarding surgical results. Race records were acqu

The relationship between homozygosity and the occurrence of specific diseases in Bouvier Belge des Flandres dogs in The Netherlands.

Since purebred dog populations represent closed gene pools, a relatively high level of consanguinity between individuals, and hence of inbreeding, is common. This case control study was conducted to establish the possible connection between the actual level of homozygosity due to inbreeding and specific diseases (flea allergy, osteochondrosis, laryngeal paralysis, neoplasm, autoimmune disease, hypoplastic trachea, and food allergy) occurring in the Bouvier Belge des Flandres breed. One hundred and sixty-eight animals referred to the Utrecht University Clinic formed the patient group. Each of t

Alteration in breathing of the awake rat after laryngeal and diaphragmatic muscle paralysis.

The respiratory rate (f), tidal volume (VT) and ventilation (V) were measured in 3 groups of rats: 10 rats before and after cutting both recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLNX), 10 rats before and after bilateral phrenicotomy (PNX) and 5 sham transected (SHAMX) rats. All rats were exposed to air and gas mixtures, deficient in O2 and/or enriched with CO2. The barometric method was used to measure ventilatory parameters. The sham operation did not affect breathing pattern or ventilation. In RLNX rats, breathing the various gas mixtures exhibited no changes in V because f uniformly increased as VT decl

Hierarchical auditory processing directed rostrally along the monkey's supratemporal plane.

Connectional anatomical evidence suggests that the auditory core, containing the tonotopic areas A1, R, and RT, constitutes the first stage of auditory cortical processing, with feedforward projections from core outward, first to the surrounding auditory belt and then to the parabelt. Connectional evidence also raises the possibility that the core itself is serially organized, with feedforward projections from A1 to R and with additional projections, although of unknown feed direction, from R to RT. We hypothesized that area RT together with more rostral parts of the supratemporal plane (rSTP)

Gene therapy for laryngeal paralysis.

OBJECTIVES: The surgical options for laryngeal paralysis only achieve static changes of vocal fold position. Laryngeal reinnervation procedures have had little impact on the return of dynamic laryngeal function. The development of a new treatment for laryngeal paralysis, aimed at the return of dynamic function and neurologic restoration and regeneration, is necessary. METHODS: To assess the possibility of gene therapy for laryngeal paralysis aiming for the return of dynamic laryngeal function, we investigated the therapeutic effects of gene therapy using rat laryngeal paralysis models. Interactions between glutamate, GABA, acetylcholine and histamine in the periaqueductal gray's control of vocalization in the squirrel monkey.

In the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus), vocalization was elicited by periaqueductal injections of the glutamate agonist homocysteic acid, the acetylcholine agonist carbachol, the GABA antagonist bicuculline and the monoaminergic transmitter histamine. All chemically induced vocalizations could be blocked completely by prior periaqueductal injections of the non-specific glutamate antagonist kynurenic acid and the GABA agonist muscimol. The acetylcholine antagonist scopolamine and the histamine antagonist diphenhydramine, in contrast, blocked their respective transmitter agonists' vocalizatio

Antinociceptive effect of a kappa-opioid receptor agonist that minimally crosses the blood-brain barrier (ICI 204448) in a rat model of mononeuropathy.

The antinociceptive effect of intraplantar (i.pl.) ICI 204448 ((R,S)-N-[2-(N-methyl-3,4-dichloro-phenylacetamido)-2-(3-carbox yph enyl)- ethyl]pyrrolidine hydrochloride)) (20, 30, 40 and 50 micrograms), a kappa-opioid receptor agonist which has limited access to the central nervous system, was studied in a well-established rat model of peripheral mononeuropathy produced by moderate constriction of the sciatic nerve. Vocalization thresholds to paw pressure were used as a nociceptive test. On the injected nerve-injured paw, ICI 204448 at 20 and 30 micrograms had no significant effect, but higher

Laryngeal pacing in minipigs: in vivo test of a new minimal invasive transcricoidal electrode insertion method for functional electrical stimulation of the PCA.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle (PCA) to restore respiratory function of the larynx may become an option for the treatment of bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis (RLNP) in the near future. The feasibility of this has been shown in several animal trials and in a human pilot study. The common open surgical inferolateral approach for electrode insertion into the PCA for FES has a risk of damaging the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and may result in postoperative swelling and scaring of the larynx. Therefore, a minimal invasive electrode in

Rostral ventromedial medulla modulates nociception and tonic immobility behavior through connections with the A7 catecholaminergic region.

Cholinergic stimulation of the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) produces antinociception and reduces the duration of tonic immobility (TI) behavior in guinea pigs. Previous studies indicated that cholinergic antinociception in the RVM is mediated through connections with the A7 catecholaminergic cell group (A7). In the current study, we tested the role of the A7 in both the antinociception and reduction of TI duration mediated by cholinergic stimulation of the RVM. In addition, we used biotinylated dextran amines (BDA) to evaluate the connections between the RVM and A7. The microinjection of

GABA enhancement of maternal defense in mice: possible neural correlates.

Previous studies have shown that low doses of GABA(A) receptor agonists facilitate maternal defense of offspring (maternal aggression), without significantly affecting other maternal behaviors. In addition, it has been demonstrated that endogenous changes in GABAergic neurotransmission occur in association with lactation. This study investigated the effects of GABA(A) receptor agonist, chlordiazepoxide (CDP), a benzodiazepine (BDZ), on maternal behaviors including aggression, and identified brain regions with altered activity in association with treatment. Another aim of the study was to deter

Effect of acid, pepsin, and bile acid on the stenotic progression of traumatized subglottis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is related to various laryngeal sequelae. However, there is a lack of established reflux animal models covering longer observation periods. We evaluated the effects of acid, pepsin, and bile acid on healing of the traumatized subglottis in a simulated reflux model. METHODS: In the first experiment, 48 rabbits were inflicted with a posterior subglottic injury using a diode laser, and there were 10 unwounded controls. After catheter insertion under transoral endoscopic guidance, animals were randomly assigned to one of the four groups: acid r

Sex-Specific Life Course Changes in the Neuro-Metabolic Phenotype of Glut3 Null Heterozygous Mice: Ketogenic Diet Ameliorates Electroencephalographic Seizures and Improves Sociability.

We tested the hypothesis that exposure of glut3+/- mice to a ketogenic diet ameliorates autism-like features, which include aberrant behavior and electrographic seizures. We first investigated the life course sex-specific changes in basal plasma-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-brain metabolic profile, brain glucose transport/uptake, glucose and monocarboxylate transporter proteins, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the presence or absence of systemic insulin administration. Glut3+/- male but not female mice (5 months of age) displayed reduced CSF glucose/lactate concentrations with no change in br

Developmental abnormalities and age-related neurodegeneration in a mouse model of Down syndrome.

To study the pathogenesis of central nervous system abnormalities in Down syndrome (DS), we have analyzed a new genetic model of DS, the partial trisomy 16 (Ts65Dn) mouse. Ts65Dn mice have an extra copy of the distal aspect of mouse chromosome 16, a segment homologous to human chromosome 21 that contains much of the genetic material responsible for the DS phenotype. Ts65Dn mice show developmental delay during the postnatal period as well as abnormal behaviors in both young and adult animals that may be analogous to mental retardation. Though the Ts65Dn brain is normal on gross examination, the

Dynamics of vitamin A uptake, storage, and utilization in vocal fold mucosa.

OBJECTIVE: Extrahepatic vitamin A is housed within organ-specific stellate cells that support local tissue function. These cells have been reported in the vocal fold mucosa (VFM) of the larynx; however, it is unknown how vitamin A reaches and is disseminated among VFM target cells, how VFM storage and utilization vary as a function of total body stores, and how these parameters change in the context of pathology. Therefore, in this study, we investigated fundamental VFM vitamin A uptake and metabolism. METHODS: Using cadaveric tissue and serum from human donors representing the full continuum

Vocal function following vertical hemilaryngectomy: comparison of four reconstruction techniques in the canine.

The goals of laryngeal reconstruction have been prevention of aspiration, production of a functional voice, and maintenance of an adequate airway for decannulation. A number of procedures for partial laryngeal reconstruction have accomplished these objectives. However, few studies have attempted to compare patients' vocal characteristics following different reconstruction procedures. In this study, an in vivo canine model was used to compare acoustic and aerodynamic measures of vocal function for the following vertical hemilaryngectomy reconstruction techniques: 1) a superiorly based sternohyo
