Standardizing the measurement and classification of quality of life using the Keratoconus End-Points Assessment Questionnaire (KEPAQ): the ABCDEF keratoconus classification.

BACKGROUND: Measuring quality of life is of importance in keratoconus. So far, the Keratoconus End-Points Assessment Questionnaire (KEPAQ) is the only keratoconus-specific scale to measure emotional well-being along with functional compromise in this population. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of clarity and standardization as to how KEPAQ scores should be computed and reported. There are also no guidelines for interpretation of classification of quality of life when using this instrument. The purpose of this study is to provide a specific framework on how to grade and classify keratoconus…

[Recognition and classification of posture and gait patterns of rollator users by distance measurements-a comparison between clinical assessment and automatic classification].

BACKGROUND: This article describes the development of an add-on module for wheeled walkers dedicated to sensor-based posture and gait pattern recognition with the goal to develop an everyday aid for fall prevention. The core contribution is a clinical study that compared single gait parameter assessments coming from medical staff to those obtained from an automatic classification algorithm, i. e. the Mahalanobis distance over time series of sensor measurements. METHODS: The walker-module described here extends an off-the-shelf wheeled walker by two depth cameras that observe the torso, pelvic…

[Expanded anamnesis and psychodiagnostic classification in psychosomatic rheumatic patients. II: A recommendation for diagnostic classification of psychosomatic disorders of the locomotor system].

This paper tries to associate psychosomatic manifestations of the locomotion-system to one of the following four diagnosis: 1) conversion disorder, 2) anxiety disorder, 3) depressive mood disorder, 4) somatization disorder. For each of these diagnosis definition, clinical manifestation, diagnostic and differential-diagnostic criteria are mentioned. The diagnostic criteria can easily be associated to the new ICD-10 (V)F diagnosis.

Spine Sound Classification: An Explainable Machine Learning Approach.

Low-cost, non-invasive screening tools for lumbar degenerative disease could complement imaging in resource-limited settings. This study pre … ng kernel PCA (min and min-sign kernels) to obtain a compact, outlier-robust latent representation. Classification is performed using standard learners (SVM, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and KNN) under leave-one-patient-out (LOPO) cross-validation. The best configuration (min-kernel L1-kPCA with 20 components) achieves 93.3% accuracy with 93.0% sensitivity …

Fragment Path Complex Networks for Viral Genome Classification.

Accurate classification of viral families is essential to understanding genomic diversity, but rapid evolution and heterogeneous genome structure complicate reliable assignment. Newly discovered viruses, particularly those from underrepresented ecosystems, expand the known diversity of viral genomes. This growing diversity poses challenges for classification methods that rely on similarity to existing references. We present Fragment Path Complex Networks (FPCN), a framework that represents viral genomes as sequences of ordered fragments at various scales. FPCN captures contextual sequence info…

Structure and Classification of Matrix Product Quantum Channels.

We develop a framework for matrix product quantum channels, a one-dimensional tensor-network description of completely positive, trace-preserving maps. We focus on translation-invariant channels, generated by a single repeated tensor, that admit a local purification. We show that their purifying isometry can always be implemented by a constant-depth brickwork quantum circuit, implying that such channels generate only short-range correlations when applied on product states. In contrast to the unitary setting, where one-dimensional quantum cellular automata (in one-to-one correspondence with mat

Functional characterization and classification of mechanosensitive bladder afferents.

Normal urinary bladder function relies on afferent fibers that detect and integrate mechanical and chemical cues related to bladder distension. Though, the molecular identity and function of the various sensory neuron types involved in bladder function have yet to be fully elucidated. Here, we introduce a novel framework for the functional classification of mechanosensitive bladder afferents based on their differential responses to physiological (15 μl/min) and noxious filling (30 s at intravesical pressures of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 cmH2O). Our data reveal the presence of three distinct t…

Transfer Learning for Improving Neuroimaging-Based Diagnostic Classification.

UNLABELLED: Overfitting, an issue that constrains the validity and generalizability of machine learning in neuroimaging-based diagnostic-classification, is in part due to small sample sizes in relation to what is required for generalization. Even with data aggregation (such as in Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange or ABIDE), the relatively smaller sample sizes are a result of the fact that it is difficult/expensive to acquire data from clinical populations. With healthy controls, we have comparatively larger samples available. Therefore, we propose to address overfitting by using larger health…

Neuroscience-Inspired Hierarchical GNN for Grasping Attempt Classification.

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) have shown promise in facilitating upper limb rehabilitation following stroke. However, restoring fine hand functions, such as grasping, remains a significant challenge. To address this, we focus on decoding hand grasp attempts from electroencephalography (EEG) to enable BCI-driven hand rehabilitation. In this work, we propose several novel methods. First, inspired by the Small-World Brain Network Theory, we introduce a Small-world Hierarchical Interconnected Graph Neural Network (SHINE). SHINE captures transient power dynamics using multiscale convolution, over

[Revisiting Phylogenetic Classification: The World of Comparative Neuroanatomy].

Comparative neuroanatomy examines the phylogeny of the nervous system by tracing structural homologies. The cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, and cerebellum are areas where phylogenetic classification is widely applied, but recent findings have prompted a reassessment of long-standing views. For example, emerging evidence suggests that the neocortex is an ancient system originating from cyclostomes. Furthermore, the concept of the archicerebellum is being questioned, and the theory that the cerebellum originates from it has lost its bases. Comparative neuroanatomy is also expanding towards newer…

2DSDNN: A Novel Approach for Alzheimer's Disease Classification.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent types of dementia, which primarily impacts the elderly. Distinguishing AD stages has emerged as a significant challenge. The recent progress in neurological imaging techniques in conjunction with machine learning approaches has proved effective in identifying patterns in medical imaging. This can assist specialists in the early identification of AD. METHODS: This paper proposes a skull-stripping algorithm to achieve precise image classification on MRI modalities. To achieve this, thresholding and morphological manipulations a…

Two-Stage Wildlife Event Classification for Edge Deployment.

Camera-based wildlife monitoring is often overwhelmed by non-target triggers and slowed by manual review or cloud-dependent inference, which can prevent timely intervention for high stakes human-wildlife conflicts. Our key contribution is a deployable, fully offline edge vision sensor that achieves near-real-time, highly accurate wildlife event classification by combining detector-based empty-image suppression with a lightweight classifier trained with a staged transfer-learning curriculum. Specifically, Stage 1 uses a pretrained You Only Look Once (YOLO)-family detector for permissive animal …

Left-right relationship-aware 3D volume classification method.

PURPOSE: This paper proposes a left-right (LR) relationship-aware classification model for 3D volumetric images (3D volume). Bilateral symmetry (LR relationship) is an essential property of the human body that can be used to detect abnormalities and understand anatomical structures. Checking the difference and similarity between the left and right anatomical structures is very important in diagnosis. We propose an LR relationship-aware classification model of 3D volume. METHODS: The proposed model employs an image feature extraction process from LR symmetric positions of human anatomy from 3D…

Major Tragal Malformations: Structural Feature, Classification, and Reconstruction.

Major congenital tragal malformations are characterized by structural anomalies involving both the tragal and external auditory canal (EAC) cartilages, associated with the accessory auricle (AA). Despite their prevalence, previous classification systems and surgical techniques have focused primarily on the outer framework, particularly the AA cartilage. This retrospective study included 258 ears in 247 patients who underwent surgical reconstruction between 2013 and 2023. The structural components were analyzed, and a novel classification system was proposed based on the morphology and connecti…

Automated Rigo Classification: An Innovative Artificial Intelligence System.

Although there is variation in clinicians' application of the Rigo classification system (RCS) to adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, no artificial intelligence (AI) models have been developed to standardize the RCS specifically. This study aimed to develop an AI model that applies the RCS to X-rays, and compare its parameter measurements, processing time, and classification accuracy to human observers. Using an open-source AI model from Scoliosis Tools, an AI model was developed to apply the RCS. Twenty non-surgical, non-in-brace X-rays of AIS patients were chosen from a SpineWeb public dataset.…
