INTRODUCTION: Preexisting posterior capsular opacification is commonly seen in the developing world due to late presentation of patients for cataract surgery. Patients are implanted with either hydrophilic or hydrophobic IOL. Effect of these IOLs on pre-existing posterior capsular opacification has not yet been reported.
AIM: To determine the incidence of peripheral preexisting posterior capsular opacity (PPPCO) in patients undergoing cataract surgery and the rate of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) following implantation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic intraocular lens (IOLs).

PURPOSE: Evaluation of the visual and refractive results 3 months after implantation of a diffractive extended range of vision (ERV) intraocular lens (IOL) during cataract surgery.
METHODS: In a prospective multicentre study, patients with a calculated postoperative corneal astigmatism of ≤ 1.5 D received a diffractive ERV IOL (TECNIS Symfony, model ZXR00, Abbott Medical Optics, USA) during cataract surgery. After 3 months, the monocular and binocular corrected and uncorrected far, intermediate and near visual acuity, as well as refraction, were evaluated.
RESULTS: 18 patients (36 eyes) with

PURPOSE: To prospectively compare postoperative results of two premium intraocular lenses EnVISTA (Bausch and Lomb) and AcrySof IQ (Alcon), focussing on glistenings and posterior capsule opacification. The evaluation of glistenings was done using Image J software and posterior capsule opacifications were quantified with OSCA system.
METHODS: Twenty patients (7 men and 13 women) with bilateral cataract were included. EnVista intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted in one eye and AcrySof IQ IOL in the second eye of each patient. Objective evaluation methods were used for assessment. Glistenings wa

PURPOSE: To evaluate visual outcomes following implantation of a trifocal diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) and to analyze their correlation with patient satisfaction and ease of performing daily tasks.
METHODS: This was a prospective study enrolling 100 eyes of 50 patients undergoing cataract surgery with implantation of trifocal IOL AT LISA tri 839MP. Visual and refractive outcomes were evaluated during a 3-month follow-up. Postoperatively, a questionnaire was used to evaluate patient satisfaction with regard to surgical outcome, spectacle independence, perception of photic phenomena, and

PURPOSE: This pilot study, the first of its type, was conducted to determine the clinical outcome of a sequential glaucoma drainage implant (GDI) inserted in piggyback manner, that is into the bleb of a primary GDI.
METHODS: This was a retrospective chart study with a minimum 1-year follow-up involving 16 eyes of 14 uncontrolled glaucoma patients who had previously undergone sequential GDI performed using a technique to convert a one-plate into a two-plate implant system. Surgical success was defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) <21 mm Hg with at least a 30% reduction in IOP from baseline on

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of the Baerveldt glaucoma implant (BGI) in children.
METHODS: The medical records of pediatric glaucoma patients aged 5 months to 19 years who underwent BGI placement by a single surgeon (JCS) between January 1, 2000, and March 1, 2010, were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were evaluated at 3-9 months, 12-18 months, and 24-30 months after surgery. We defined surgical success as a postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) of >6 mm Hg and <21 mm Hg, without additional glaucoma surgery, loss of light perception, removal of the BGI, chronic hypotony, retinal de

PURPOSE: To evaluate by means of the Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) the biomechanical changes that follow intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation and to develop a predicting model for the postoperative visual outcome, considering these biomechanical changes and other clinical parameters.
METHODS: A total of 45 consecutive keratoconic eyes of 35 patients aged 18 to 55 years and implanted with ICRS were included in this retrospective study. All patients were implanted with KeraRing using femtosecond laser technology. Visual acuity, refraction, corneal topography, and aberrations were eval
