Beyond robotic platforms: artificial intelligence and the emergence of intelligent surgical ecosystems in colorectal surgery.

Robotic surgery has substantially advanced minimally invasive colorectal surgery through improvements in dexterity, visualization, and ergonomics. However, contemporary robotic platforms remain fundamentally mechanical systems that rely almost entirely on surgeons for perception, clinical judgment, and intraoperative decision-making. As colorectal surgery becomes increasingly complex and the surgical population grows older and frailer, further progress is unlikely to depend on hardware innovation alone. This narrative review and conceptual synthesis was informed by a purposive, non-systematic

Ultra-tough dual-network conductive hydrogel with UV-blocking, antibacterial properties and freeze resistance for wearable strain sensor.

Flexible electronic sensors hold great promise in the fields of wearable health monitoring and human-computer interaction. However, existing hydrogel systems generally suffer from insufficient mechanical strength and limited multifunctional integration. To address these bottlenecks, a self-assembly strategy was employed to fabricate a supramolecular ionic hydrogel based on lignosulfonate (SL) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), exploiting the coordination interactions of Zn2+ to construct a PVA/SL/ZnCl2 hydrogel sensor. Owing to the dual network structure of PVA/SL and Zn2+/SL within the supramolecul

Multimodal Learning with Privileged Report Supervision for Generalizable Tuberculosis Detection on Chest Radiographs.

Multimodal learning using images and associated clinical text offers richer semantic supervision for medical AI. However, models trained with synthetic reports risk hallucination, and conventional multimodal tuberculosis (TB) systems are impractical because they require text at inference. In realworld screening workflows, particularly in low-resource settings or during triage, radiology reports are often unavailable or delayed. Computer-aided detection systems for chest X-rays (CXRs) are considered a potential solution. In this context, this study proposes a method that uses clinically grounde

Mammogram Analysis with YOLO Models on an Affordable Embedded System.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer persists as a leading cause of female mortality globally. Mammograms are a key screening tool for early detection, although many resource-limited hospitals lack access to skilled radiologists and advanced diagnostic tools. Deep learning-based computer-aided detection (CAD) systems can assist radiologists by automating lesion detection and classification. This study investigates the performance of various You Only Look Once (YOLO) models and a Hybrid Convolutional-Transformer Architecture (YOLOv5, YOLOv8, YOLOv10, YOLOv11, and Real-Time-DEtection Transformer

Enhancing Prostate Cancer Classification: A Comprehensive Review of Multiparametric MRI and Deep Learning Integration.

Multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) has become an essential tool in the detection of prostate cancer (PCa) and can help many men avoid unnecessary biopsies. However, interpreting prostate mpMRI remains subjective, labor-intensive, and more complex compared to traditional transrectal ultrasound. These challenges will likely grow as MRI is increasingly adopted for PCa screening and diagnosis. This development has sparked interest in non-invasive artificial intelligence (AI) support, as larger and better-labeled datasets now enable deep-learning (DL) models to address important tasks in the prostate MRI

A multi-task self-supervised approach for mass detection in automated breast ultrasound using double attention recurrent residual U-Net.

Breast cancer is the most common and lethal cancer among women worldwide. Early detection using medical imaging technologies can significantly improve treatment outcomes. Automated breast ultrasound, known as ABUS, offers more advantages compared to traditional mammography and has recently gained considerable attention. However, reviewing hundreds of ABUS slices imposes a high workload on radiologists, increasing review time and potentially leading to diagnostic errors. Consequently, there is a strong need for efficient computer-aided detection, CADe, systems. In recent years, researchers have

Neuroanatomy-Informed Brain-Machine Hybrid Intelligence for Robust Acoustic Target Detection.

Sound target detection (STD) plays a critical role in modern acoustic sensing systems. However, existing automated STD methods show poor robustness and limited generalization, especially under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions or when processing previously unencountered sound categories. To overcome these limitations, we first propose a brain-computer interface (BCI)-based STD method that utilizes neural responses to auditory stimuli. Our approach features the Triple-Region Spatiotemporal Dynamics Attention Network (Tri-SDANet), an electroencephalogram (EEG) decoding model incorporati

Real-time, accurate, and open source upper-limb musculoskeletal analysis using a single RGBD camera - An exploratory hand-cycling study.

Biomechanical biofeedback may enhance rehabilitation and provide clinicians with more objective task evaluation. These feedbacks often rely on expensive motion capture systems (∼$100000), which restricts their widespread use, leading to the development of computer vision-based methods. These methods are subject to large joint angle errors, considering the upper limb, and exclude the scapula and clavicle motion in the analysis. Our open-source approach offers a user-friendly solution for high-fidelity upper-limb kinematics using a single consumer-grade depth-sensing camera (∼$500) and includes

Falcon Probe: A High-Pressure and Robust Sampling Interface for Coupling Lossless Liquid Chromatography Injection with In Situ Nanoliter-Scale Sample Pretreatment.

With the increasing demand for trace sample analysis, injecting trace samples into liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) systems with minimal loss has become a major challenge. Herein, we describe an in situ LC-MS analytical probe, the Falcon probe, which integrates multiple functions of high-pressure sample injection without sample loss, high-efficiency LC separation, and electrospray. The main body of the Falcon probe is made of stainless steel and fabricated by the computer numerical control (CNC) technique, which has ultrahigh mechanical strength. By coupling a nanoliter-scale dr

Toward a Real-World Technical Test Battery for Remote Microphone Systems Used with Hearing Prostheses.

Remote microphones (RMs) enable clearer reception of speech than would be normally achievable when relying on the acoustic sound field at the listener's ear (Hawkins, J Sp Hear Disord 49, 409-418, 1984). They are used in a wide range of environments, with one example being for children in educational settings. The international standards defining the assessment methods of the technical performance of RMs rely on free-field (anechoic) delivery, a rarely met acoustic scenario. Although some work has been offered on more real-world testing (Husstedt et al., Int J Audiol 61, 34-45. 2022), the area

Sequence based local-global information fusion framework for vertebrae detection under pathological and FOV variation challenges.

Automated vertebrae detection (identification and localization) aims to identify vertebrae and locate their centroids in medical images, which is a critical step of spinal computer-aided systems. However, due to unpredictable field-of-view and various pathology cases, the image content is diverse and the vertebral morphology can be abnormal in a variety of ways, which challenges the designed systems. In this paper, we propose an effective sequence-based framework robust to various tough cases for accurate vertebrae identification and localization. Our method consists of three sub-modules: (1)

Stockwell transform and semi-supervised feature selection from deep features for classification of BCI signals.

Over the past few years, the processing of motor imagery (MI) electroencephalography (EEG) signals has been attracted for developing brain-computer interface (BCI) applications, since feature extraction and classification of these signals are extremely difficult due to the inherent complexity and tendency to artifact properties of them. The BCI systems can provide a direct interaction pathway/channel between the brain and a peripheral device, hence the MI EEG-based BCI systems seem crucial to control external devices for patients suffering from motor disabilities. The current study presents a

A Localized-Orbital Energy Evaluation for Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo.

Phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (ph-AFQMC) has recently emerged as a promising method for the production of benchmark-level simulations of medium- to large-sized molecules because of its accuracy and favorable polynomial scaling with system size. Unfortunately, the memory footprints of standard energy evaluation algorithms are nontrivial, which can significantly impact timings on graphical processing units (GPUs) where memory is limited. Previous attempts to reduce scaling by taking advantage of the low-rank structure of the Coulombic integrals have been successful but exhibit hi

Field Network-A New Method to Detect Directional Object.

As the development of object detection technology in computer vision, identifying objects is always an active yet challenging task, and even more efficient and accurate requirements are being imposed on state-of-the-art algorithms. However, many algorithms perform object box regression based on RPN(Region Proposal Network) and anchors, which cannot accurately describe the shape information of the object. In this paper, we propose a new object detection method called Field Network (FN) and Region Fitting Algorithm (RFA). It can solve these problems by Center Field. Center field reflects the pro
