Risk of unfavorable pain prognosis impacts walking physiomechanical parameters and psychophysiological workload in sufferers of chronic low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Tolerating physical tasks depends not only on task-specific characteristics but also on an individual's psychophysiological capacity to respond to the imposed load. People suffering from chronic low back pain (CLBP) may experience reduced psychophysiological capacity and are at risk for poor pain prognosis, which could lead to an increased walking workload. AIM: To investigate how the risk of unfavorable pain prognosis in CLBP can impact walking physiomechanical parameters and psychophysiological workload. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study. The study classified 74 vo

Oral somatosensory alterations and salivary dysfunction in head and neck cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) are at high risk of malnutrition due to eating difficulties partly mediated by sensory alterations and salivary dysfunction. Clinical studies have mostly focused on taste and smell alterations, while changes in oral somatosensory perception are largely understudied. The study aimed to investigate oral somatosensory (tactile, texture, chemesthetic, and thermal) responses and salivary functions of HNC patients in comparison to healthy controls. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using psychophysical tests in HNC patients (n = 30) and

Real-time vibrotactile pattern generation and identification using discrete event-driven feedback.

This study assesses human identification of vibrotactile patterns by using real-time discrete event-driven feedback. Previously acquired force and bend sensor data from a robotic hand were used to predict movement-type (stationary, flexion, contact, extension, release) and object-type (no object, hard object, soft object) states by using decision tree (DT) algorithms implemented in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Six able-bodied humans performed a 2- and 3-step sequential pattern recognition task in which state transitions were signaled as vibrotactile feedback. The stimuli were genera

Test-retest reliability of a 30-min fixed perceived effort cycling exercise.

PURPOSE: Using exercise protocols at a fixed rating of perceived effort (RPE) is a useful method for exploring the psychophysical influences on exercise performance. However, studies that have employed this protocol have arbitrarily selected RPE values without considering how these values correspond to exercise intensity thresholds and domains. Therefore, aligning RPE intensities with established physiological thresholds seems more appropriate, although the reliability of this method has not been assessed. METHODS: Eight recreationally active cyclists completed two identical ramped incrementa

Inaccurate self-report of olfactory dysfunction in REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder and implications for prognosis.

INTRODUCTION: The earliest stages of alpha-synucleinopathies are accompanied by non-specific prodromal symptoms such as diminished sense of smell, constipation and depression, as well as more specific prodromal conditions including REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder (RBD). While the majority of RBD patients will develop an alpha-synucleinopathy, one of the greatest clinical challenges is determining whether and when individual patients will phenoconvert. Clinical evaluation of a patient presenting with RBD should therefore include robust and objective assessments of known alpha-synucleinopathy prodr

Depression in Early Childhood.

According to data from the WHO, the COVID-19 pandemic has created an increase in anxiety and depression around the world. In particular, there has been an increase in Depressive Disorder in childhood: the closure of childcare centers has caused great stress in parents, especially in mothers who have developed more depressive disorders. Maternal depression appears to have created problematic behaviors in preschool children. This phenomenon is explained by several studies that over the years have shown that a good mother-child interaction is essential for the child's psychophysical health and th

Feasibility and safety of physical exercise in men with prostate cancer receiving androgen deprivation therapy and radiotherapy: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and radiotherapy (RT) increase survival in selected patients with prostate cancer. Nevertheless, the side effects of these therapies are associated with an increased risk of accidental falls and fractures and a decreased quality of life. Preliminary evidence suggests that physical exercise can be a valid strategy to reduce the side effects of ADT and RT in men with prostate cancer. Despite this knowledge, most patients with prostate cancer are insufficiently active, and there is a lack of data on the safety and adherence to the recommended dose

The Adaptive Olfactory Measure of Threshold (ArOMa-T): A rapid test of olfactory function.

PURPOSE: Many widely-used psychophysical tests of olfaction have limitations that can create barriers to adoption outside research settings. For example, tests that measure the ability to identify odors may confound sensory performance with memory recall, verbal ability, and past experience with the odor. Conversely, threshold-based tests typically avoid these issues, but are labor intensive. Additionally, many commercially available olfactory tests are slow and may require a trained administrator, making them impractical for use in a short wellness visit or other broad clinical assessment. The Impact of Stress-Coping Strategies and the Severity of Psoriasis on Self-Esteem, Illness Acceptance and Life Satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION: The visibility of skin lesions is a significant burden for patients with psoriasis, who experience social hostility as well as many emotional and psychological problems. The recurrent nature of cutaneous manifestations and their location are also a source of emotional distress, which in turn is one of the main factors that intensifies skin lesions in these patients. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of the severity of psoriasis and stress-coping strategies on general psychometric measures in the affected patients. METHODS: The study used a short demographic questionn

Olfactory Loss and Beyond: A Practical Review of Chemosensory Dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Our ability to smell and taste is dictated by 3 chemosensory systems with distinct physiologic mechanisms - olfaction, gustation, and chemesthesis. Although often overlooked, dysfunction of these special senses may have broad implications on multiple facets of patients' lives -including safety, nutritional status, quality of life, mental health, and even cognitive function. As "loss of smell or taste" emerged as a common symptom of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the importance of intact chemosensory function has been thrust into the spotlight. Despite the growing recognition

Actuation Timing Perception of a Powered Ankle Exoskeleton and Its Associated Ankle Angle Changes During Walking.

Robotic ankle exoskeletons have the potential to extend human ability, and actuation timing serves as one of the critical parameters in its controller design. While many experiments have investigated the optimal actuation timing values to achieve different objective functions (e.g. minimizing metabolic cost), studies on users' perception of control parameters are gaining interest as it gives information on people's comfort, coordination, and trust in using devices, as well as providing foundations on how the sensorimotor system detects the exoskeleton behavior changes. The purpose of this stud

Three auditory brainstem response (ABR) methods tested and compared in two anuran species.

Hearing sensitivity has been extensively investigated, often by measuring the auditory brainstem response (ABR). ABR measurements are relatively non-invasive, easy to reproduce, and allow the assessment of sensitivity when psychophysical data are difficult to obtain. However, the experimental methods differ greatly in respect to stimulation, which may result in different audiograms. We used three different methods in the same individual frogs: stimulating with brief tone bursts (tABR), long-duration tones (ltABR) and masked ABR (mABR), where transients are masked by a long-duration sinusoid, a

Self-referential gaze perception of patients with schizophrenia and its relationship with symptomatology and cognitive functions.

Self-referential gaze perception (SRGP)-the perception that others' gaze is towards oneself-is a core experience in patients with schizophrenia, and may be related to common delusional themes such as delusions of reference. Studies exploring SRGP bias in schizophrenia are limited and results have been inconsistent, particularly regarding its relationship with symptomatology and cognition. Seventy-five patients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (25 with high level of reference delusion, 25 with low reference delusion and 25 in clinical remission) and 25 matched healthy controls were compare

The processing of angry faces in schizophrenia patients with a history of suicide: An fMRI study examining brain activity and connectivity.

BACKGROUND: The high rate of suicidal behaviours (SBs) in psychiatric populations remain an important preoccupation to address. The literature reveals emotional instability as an important risk factor for SBs. However, the neural mechanisms underpinning this risk factor have never been investigated in schizophrenia patients with SBs. The following study implemented a task-based emotional processing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm to evaluate the activation and connectivity differences exhibited by schizophrenia patients with a history of suicide attempt (SA). METHOD: A s

Does alpha phase modulate visual target detection? Three experiments with tACS-phase-based stimulus presentation.

In recent years, the influence of alpha (7-13 Hz) phase on visual processing has received a lot of attention. Magneto-/encephalography (M/EEG) studies showed that alpha phase indexes visual excitability and task performance. Studies with transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) aim to modulate oscillations and causally impact task performance. Here, we applied right occipital tACS (O2 location) to assess the functional role of alpha phase in a series of experiments. We presented visual stimuli at different pre-determined, experimentally controlled, phases of the entraining tACS sign
