OBJECTIVES: The relationship between exposure to rodent allergens and laboratory animal allergy is complex; at highest allergen exposures there is an attenuation of sensitisation and symptoms which are associated with increased levels of rat-specific immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgG4 antibodies. We set out to examine whether the increased levels of rat-specific IgG and IgG4 antibodies that we have previously observed at high allergen exposure in our cohort of laboratory animal workers play a functional role through blockage of the binding of IgE-allergen complex binding to CD23 receptors on B cell

BACKGROUND: Bartonella species are important emerging pathogens in human and veterinary medicine. In the context of their daily activities, veterinary professionals have frequent animal contact and arthropod exposures. Detection of Bartonella spp. using traditional culture methods has been limited by poor sensitivity, making it difficult to determine the prevalence of infection in this population. We have developed a detection method combining enrichment culture and molecular amplification, which increases testing sensitivity.
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study to determine the pre

We determined factors associated with occupational transmission in Wisconsin during the 2003 outbreak of prairie dog--associated monkeypox virus infections. Our investigation included active contact surveillance, exposure-related interviews, and a veterinary facility cohort study. We identified 19 confirmed, 5 probable, and 3 suspected cases. Rash, headache, sweats, and fever were reported by > 80% of patients. Occupationally transmitted infections occurred in 12 veterinary staff, 2 pet store employees, and 2 animal distributors. The following were associated with illness: working directly wit

BACKGROUND: Vaccination provides protection against infection by inducing VNAs mainly against RABV surface GP. The measurement of VNAs to RABV is commonly used to assess the level of immunity in humans and animals after vaccination. A VNA titer of ≥ 0.5 IU/mL of sera indicates adequate response to vaccination. Here, we report the development and validation of a RABV GP serology ELISA kit for semi-quantitative measurement of VNA titers in sera of vaccinated human subjects.
METHODS: Using a recombinant RABV GP expressed in mammalian cells as the capture antigen, the ELISA method was establishe

OBJECTIVE: Subjects exposed to laboratory animals are at a heightened risk of developing respiratory and allergic diseases. These diseases can be prevented by simple measures such as the use of personal protective equipment. We report here the primary findings of the Laboratory Animals and Respiratory Allergies Study regarding the prevalence of allergic diseases among laboratory animal workers, the routine use of preventive measures in laboratories and animal facilities, and the need for prevention programs.
METHODS: Animal handlers and non-animal handlers from 2 Brazilian universities (Unive

Toxoplasma gondii is a coccidian parasite capable of infecting humans and other warm-blooded animals, with approximately 30% of the world's population chronically infected. Workers who handle animals occupationally, such as veterinarians in small-animal practices, are at a higher risk of infection. Common risk factors among these workers include contact with cats and other animals in a clinical setting. For this reason, this study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM antibodies among small-animal veterinary personnel in Veracruz, Mexico. Blood sa

BACKGROUND: Mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit (ICU) is a life-saving technique for patients with acute respiratory failure, but is also associated with a high incidence of complications in the injured lung. Currently, there is no widely used monitoring technique to guide the ventilator setting to facilitate a precision medicine approach or to provide a real-time alert for developing adverse pulmonary conditions. Conventional ultrasound has been used as a thoracic bedside technology, but the lack of signal penetration into lung tissue results in images that often contain more in

Brucellosis is a common zoonosis in China, resulting in abortion in animals. Outbreaks of abortion in blue foxes caused by Brucella infection have rarely been reported. In the present study, 3-5 mL blood samples collected from the femoral veins of 10 abortuses of blue foxes were assessed by RBPT (Rose Bengal plate test) and SAT (serum tube agglutination test) to preliminarily investigate the source of infection for the clustering of abortion events at a blue fox farm in Heilongjiang Province. Screening experiments showed that all 10 blood samples were positive in the RBPT, while only eight blo

In 1999 and 2000, 3 state health departments reported 4 outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness due to Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium in employees, clients, and client animals from 3 companion animal veterinary clinics and 1 animal shelter. More than 45 persons and companion animals became ill. Four independent investigations resulted in the testing of 19 human samples and >200 animal samples; 18 persons and 36 animals were culture-positive for S. Typhimurium. One outbreak was due to multidrug-resistant S. Typhimurium R-type ACKSSuT, while the other 3 were due to multidrug-resistant S.

Reports of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in animals have become more frequent in recent years. This paper documents the recovery of MRSA from animals with respiratory, urinary tract or wound infection and from animals subjected to surgical procedures following treatment in one veterinary hospital and 16 private veterinary clinics in different geographical locations throughout Ireland. MRSA was recovered from 25 animals comprising 14 dogs, eight horses, one cat, one rabbit and a seal, and also from 10 attendant veterinary personnel. Clinical susceptibility testing suggested

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We have previously reported that high rat urinary allergen (RUA) exposure was not associated with increased risk of rat allergy in long-term-exposed laboratory animal (LA) workers. We aimed to assess whether strong allergen-specific IgG4 responses could explain the absence of a dose response in these subjects. We investigated whether IgG4 was associated with allergen exposure and prevalence of sensitization or respiratory symptoms to rats. The longitudinal relation between IgG4 and rat allergy was studied using data obtained during 2 years of follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory animal allergy (LAA) is an important cause of occupational sensitization and asthma. Rats are a frequent cause of LAA and the major rat allergen, Rat n 1, is a member of the lipocalin protein family, which includes several other animal allergens such as the cow allergen, Bos d 2. To date, Bos d 2 is the only mammalian lipocalin allergen to have been studied in detail.
OBJECTIVE: We undertook a cross-sectional study of a large population of individuals exposed to laboratory rats to determine the proliferative responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to the
