PURPOSE: The volume of the vitreous chamber varies with the size of the eye. The space created in the vitreous cavity by a vitrectomy is called the vitrectomized space. The volume of the vitrectomized space is strongly correlated with the axial length of the eye. This study aims to present guidelines for estimating the using participants stratified by axial length, sex, and history of cataract surgery.
METHODS: This retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study included 144 randomly selected participants who underwent vitrectomies between 2013 and 2023. Before surgery, the axial lengths

Based on a precise definition of boundaries of the ciliary sulcus, a new anatomical method was used to measure the diameter of the ciliary sulcus in postmortem eyes. In each of 41 globes, 24 different ciliary sulcus diameters were measured and were compared with the axial length, measured by ultrasonography. The mean ciliary sulcus diameter was 11.25 mm (SD = 0.38 mm). By linear regression, the axial length values were significantly correlated with ciliary sulcus diameters. In addition, our data suggest that existence of two groups of eyes differentiated exclusively by the diameter of the cili

PURPOSE: Emmetropization requires coordinated scaling of the major ocular components, corneal curvature and axial length. This coordination is achieved in part through a shared set of genetic variants that regulate eye size. Poorly coordinated scaling of corneal curvature and axial length results in refractive error. We tested the hypothesis that genetic variants regulating eye size in emmetropic eyes are distinct from those conferring susceptibility to refractive error.
METHODS: A genome-wide association study (GWAS) for corneal curvature in 22,180 adult emmetropic individuals was performed

Method 'A' ultrasonographic biometry was performed on 23 patients with congenital glaucoma. The axial lengths of these eyes were significantly greater as compared to the 7 fellow eyes with normal intraocular pressures of the same patients and 10 eyes of 5 patients with megalocornea of the same age. Some of the borderline cases showed an increase of axial length during follow-up not attributable to normal growth. After successful surgery an early decrease of the axial length up to 0.8 mm could be seen. The change occurred in post-equatorial measurements. It is concluded that ultrasonographic bi

BACKGROUND: Pseudophakic children tend to develop a large myopic shift. This may be in part due to accelerated growth in axial length. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the postoperative change in axial length (DeltaAL) in pseudophakic eyes, after extraction of traumatic or congenital cataract.
METHODS: Included in this retrospective study were 20 children who had undergone surgery for traumatic, unilateral congenital, or bilateral congenital cataracts. All patients were under 10 years old at the time of operation. Axial length was measured perioperatively as well as 1 yea

PURPOSE: To determine the impact of eye shape using three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging on myopic maculopathy (MM) progression.
METHODS: At baseline, 67 participants with high myopia were selected. Eye shape was classified into spheroidal, ellipsoidal, temporally distorted, nasally distorted, conical, and barrel-shape identified from three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging. Spheroidal and ellipsoidal shapes were defined as nondeformity; others were defined as eye deformity. Myopic maculopathy progression was determined through color fundus photography.
RESULTS: Within a 4-year

BACKGROUND: There have been a series of reports indicating that scleral buckling (SB) surgery may induce high myopia in advanced retinopathy of prematurity. The mechanism of SB on refractive change in children, however, is not clearly known. We designed this study to investigate the effects of SB on refractive error and ocular growth in young rabbits and demonstrate their mechanisms.
METHODS: For the study, SB surgery was performed on the right eyes of nine 5-week-old rabbits and 11 8-week old rabbits, with encircling buckle. The left eyes were monitored for control. Spherical equivalent, cor

PURPOSE: To demonstrate a mathematical analogy between the Pythagorean theorem using the axial a-scan measurement, i.e., the distance between the central cornea and the sclerotomy, and the lengths of the forceps in eyes of patients with all axial lengths.
METHODS: We used the Pythagorean equation (c 2 = a 2 + b 2 ) to calculate the adequate shaft length of the forceps to use in macular surgery, especially in highly myopic eyes, where c 2 represents the axial length (hypotenuse); b 2 the sum of the corneal ray and distance between the corneal limbus and the sclerotomy (base side); and a 2 the

The main objective of the current study was to investigate further the relationship of the overall length of the eye with a great variety of anterior segment parameters, including scleral geometry. A total of 64 eyes of 32 participants with ages from 12 to 52 years were included in this prospective non-randomized single-center study. All participants underwent a complete eye examination, including an analysis of corneo-scleral shape with a Fourier-domain profilometer. A strong negative correlation was found between axial length and temporal-nasal ocular sagittal height difference for different
