This article discusses strategies to prevent and manage the most common complications seen in body contouring surgery. General approaches to avoidance and treatment of these complications are addressed, including wound dehiscence, delayed wound healing, seroma, hematoma, infections of the surgical or remote sites, lymphedema, suture extrusion, and fat necrosis. Procedure-specific complications and pearls to avoiding complications in these cases are presented. Difficult problems, such as management of the disappointed patient, also are discussed.

Since the development of mandibular contouring surgery, there have been many unfavorable results due to technical reasons. Those results include asymmetry, undercorrection, overcorrection, and an incorrect contour line. Gynecomastia may result in psychological problems because the presence of a "feminized" chest changes the male body contour, altering the masculine ideal of virility. Currently, surgical techniques described for the correction of gynecomastia are for some patients associated with aesthetically unacceptable scars, sometimes less tolerated than the chest deformity itself. Fat embolism syndrome is reported in a patient who underwent abdominoplasty and suction lipectomy for body contouring. Within 48 hours after surgery, she experienced adult respiratory distress syndrome, secondary to fat embolism syndrome. This was proven on bronchoscopy by evidence of fat laden macrophages. Aggressive respiratory support over 12 days resulted in patient survival.
