[Prognostic criteria in sudden deafness].

The present study was devised to determine whether the pattern of hearing loss has any meaning for prognosis in patients with sudden hearing loss. The audiograms and clinical records of 145 patients with sudden deafness between 1991 and 1993 were reviewed. Forty-eight of the patients were females and 97 were males. All patients had been hospitalized and treated with intravenous infusions of naftidrofuryl. The best recovery rate was seen in patients with low-tone hearing losses (68.8% complete and 25% partial recoveries), whereas in patients with high-tone and flat losses the recovery rates wer…

Cortical deafness: a longitudinal study.

We have studied a patient with MRI-confirmed bilateral absence of considerable portions of her temporal lobes resulting in cortical deafness. Although physiologic measures demonstrate normal peripheral hearing sensitivity, this patient's speech has the inflection and prosodic characteristics associated with profound peripheral hearing loss, and she is unable to understand spoken communication. Behaviorally obtained pure-tone thresholds taken over nearly 20 years range from normal to moderate hearing loss with normal middle ear muscle reflexes and normal ABRs; however, we consistently found abn…

Ichthyosis, deafness, and Hirschsprung's disease.

An infant with congenital ichthyosis and deafness developed Hirschsprung's disease. No evidence of keratitis was present. No previous cases of ichthyosis have been associated with aganglionic megacolon. Although no corneal changes were observed, we believe that the clinical features of ichthyosis and deafness suggest the diagnosis of KID (keratitis, ichthyosis, deafness) syndrome. Whether corneal changes would have occurred is unknown, since the infant died of malnutrition and infectious complications.

Newly recognized ectrodactyly/deafness syndrome.

A 7-year-old non-Ashkenazi Jewish girl is described having asymmetrical ectrodactyly (split hand and foot deformity), short stature, mental retardation, sensorineural deafness, and abnormal facies. Because this constellation of findings has not been reported previously, the authors believe that this represents a new congenital malformation syndrome, most probably of genetic etiology.

[Cytomegalovirus and acquired congenital deafness].

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is nowadays a frequent causal agent in pediatric acquired hearing loss and should become the principal one in the next few years. CMV is a herpes like virus. Eighty percent of all adults are carriers of this virus in the salivary glands, without any symptom. In the pregnant women, CMV can act by reactivation and give a placental and foetal infection. The pregnant woman is generally asymptomatic when infected. In the infant, besides death in utero, the CMV can produce two clinical types. Ten percent of the congenitally infected infants presented symptoms at birth. In a qua

[KID syndrome (keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness)].

The KID syndrome is characterized by congenital ichthyosis, vascular keratitis and neurosensorial deafness. We report a 17 year old female patient, the first case of KID syndrome in Spanish literature. Red, dry, scaling skin was present at birth with sparse hair. At the age of six, malar erythema was prominent, with perioral ragades and onset of progressive neurosensory deafness. At the age of ten, vascularizing keratitis developed. At 12, treatment with etretinate failed to improve the ichthyosis. We review the clinical, pathological and analytical features of KID syndrome and discuss its rel…

[Mitral prolapse and sudden deafness].

Whilst it is generally accepted that sudden idiopathic sudden deafness is due to vascular spasm (though such a possibility has in no way been demonstrated), it would seem necessary for another explanation to be envisaged quite often: an embolic process. The present series of 58 cases included 23 cases of Barlow's disease, i.e. 39.6%, whilst the incidence of this mitral valve abnormality in the general population is only 5 to 10%. Already accepted as an aetiology for cerebral and retinal vascular accidents, Barlow's disease, revealed only by echocardiography, calls for the replacement of classi…

[A case of hysterical deafness].

A forty years old woman with hysterical deafness is reported. Chief complaints were bilateral hearing loss. Nothing particular was found in her past and family history. In 1977, on the 11th day of May, she was admitted to A city hospital because of headache and paresis of right limb. As angiography revealed an aneurysms of her anterior communicating artery, she was undertaken the surgery of clipping and coating of the aneurysms. Post-operatively, left hemiparalysis appeared and paresis of right limb developed because of spasm of right middle cerebral artery. On the 14th day of August, ventricu…

Cortical deafness in multiple sclerosis.

Cortical deafness in a patient with multiple sclerosis is reported. Complete recovery from total deafness was seen following stages of auditory agnosia and pure word deafness. The otological and neurophysiological studies suggested lesions in subcortical white matter. This report stresses the rarity of the condition, its subcortical origin and good prognosis.
